Voila!!
No.

Because they said it's the 10th anniversary, not the celebration of the 10th series.

If they are marking July the 17th as the 10th anniversary, then it would have had to have started on July the 17th 1999.

Or am I just being a f**kwit?

But excuse me for being thick... but that was 2000 right? So won't July the 17th be the 9th anniversary? Confused

Am I being thick? Or can Channel 4 not count?

Crunchy - I agree - have said it on numerous occasions, and people tell me not to get so picky!!

So you think they'll be marking the 10th anniversary of September 11th 2001 on September 11th 2010?

Do me a favour.

Anniversary means a date to mark a year since an event, therefore the 10th anniversary has to be 10 years after the event, not 9 years after the event. Therefore the 10th anniversary of BB starting has got to be July the 17th 2010.

I cannot believe so many people appear to be unable to count.

It's actually on the same level of f**kwittery as someone who was born in 1990 thinking their 20th birthday is this year.

So why not just mark it as the 10th season, instead of marking it to the exact date of the anniversary

It is 10 years. If you include 2000 and 2009, it's 10 years exactly.
There have never been two series per year, and we're on the 10th series.
10th anniversary is right.

Year 1 - 2000 (winner Craig)
Year 2 - 2001 (winner Brian D)
Year 3 - 2002 (winner Kate)
Year 4 - 2003 (winner Cameron)
Year 5 - 2004 (winner Nadia)
Year 6 - 2005 (winner Anthony)
Year 7 - 2006 (winner Pete)
Year 8 - 2007 (winner Brian B)
Year 9 - 2008 (winner Rachel)
Year 10 - 2009 (winner Rodrigo, probably)

Nope, you're wrong.

Anniversary is to mark the exact date of a year since an event, hence birthdays are anniversarys and wedding anniversarys obviously.
Crunchy Nuts
Someone born on the same day would be celebrating their ninth birthday. You don't get born as a one year old do you?

A couple who got married on the same day would be celebrating their ninth wedding anniversary. Again, you don't celebrate your first anniversary until the year after the date.

Therefore, it is the ninth anniversary of BB. Simples.

Sorry you're wrong and you kind of are being picky Frowner

Anniversary can ALSO mean.

the celebration or commemoration of such a date.

or

returning or recurring each year; annual.

Big brother itself although technically only being around physically for 9yrs had it's first show in 2000. Therefore 2000 was the first year of the show, 2001 was the second year of the show. 2009 would therefore be a commemoration (which maybe should have been the word used but it's still an anniversary) of the 10th year of the show.

Somoene wouldn't be called "one" the year they were born - they'd have to wait a year. Unlike BB. The comparison is an erroneous one.

So, you think BB celebrated it's first anniversary on the day it was launched?

Madness. Laugh

Well if someone thinks 17th July 2009 will be 10 years since 17h July 2000, then they can't count lol

I didn't say it was 10 years - but this is the tenth summer that BB has been on our screens. If you can't see that, after several people have written it out for you, then please yourself! ~shrugs~

Errr, no, I didn't say that. It is the tenth summer it has been on our tellies though.

No kidding.

But tenth summer, and tenth anniversary are two entirely different things.

Agreed. The rules do not apply for things such as special events, T.V Shows etc.

Take "Smallville" for example. It has only had 8 series' but yet it is in its ninth year already *although one year it started a series in the same year as finishing one it's the same premise*

It's the tenth series, but the ninth anniversary! Big Grin

No Lizzie it's not lol... I've already pointed out two other legitimate definitions of Anniversary both of which apply to this synopsis of Big Brother.

Crunchy - I'm not trying to be rude but your OP and title asks the question are you being thick as to wtf is going on w/ this whole 10th anniversary situation which implies you were asking other peoples opinions/explainations on the matter.

SEVERAL people have tried explaining it to you, but you don't seem to want to even bother listening to those, you're obviously set in your ways so it's okay Hug

Maybe however you should have said "I strongly believe that BB are wrong in the 10th anniversary thing and this is why. I also wont change my belief/thoughts"

I know, but some people seem incable of understanding that it has been on for TEN summers, not nine Roll Eyes

Everyone agrees with that.
It's just the use of the word 'anniversary'.

I mean technically, you could say that it is the 18th 6 month anniversary of the start of BB, or the 36th 3 month anniversary! Crazy

Now you're just being a pain in the arse Laugh
You know what I meant Big Grin

And it seems I've been ignored yet again... Always happens when I have a valid point for some reason Laugh

ANNIVERSARY

1. The yearly recurrence of the date of a past event: the tenth anniversary of their marriage. - The one that Crunchy Nut and some others seem to believe is the only definition that exists.

2. The celebration or commemoration of such a date. - APPLIES to BB.

3. Returning or recurring each year; annual. - ALSO APPLIES to BB.

Therefore the word anniversay is the right word to use and this is the 10th anniversary of Big Brother.
