I'd say his reaction is evidence enough,As for protecting herself,I'd say most are.
Any distrust of Deana dates back to Lydia, who encouraged mistrust of her on both sides of the house. Like any HM she is more self obsessed than average, but she has been there for people when it counted, including Adam when he had his row with Shev!
