It does seem a very strange attitude. They had a farm task in BB6, for example, and Ahmed - the asylum seeker! - was prodded with a cattle prod!
Matthew was right, too - many former HMs have found themselves effectively unemployable afterwards. That's part of the reason for the "Talk of Doom" to potential HMs, and if it bothers you, you shouldn't be in there...
