Spotify is one and Napster's just relaunched again... which I used for years, don't know what either them are like now though.

iTunes is always reliable.

I know nothing about itunes, but dont you have to convert them or something..i dont have an ipod,hell, i dont even own a cd player!

iTunes is free to download, you'll be given an iTunes player. All songs you download will go into the player and you can play and create your own albums till your hearts content....oh and get a bloody iPod it will just make things for more convenient for you.

If you just want to download and go I would avoid iPlayer tbh, as you say they can be difficult if not impossible to play on other formats.  MP3's is the way to go, they can be downloaded from any site, HMV, Tesco, Amazon etc and of course Spotify where you can listen to the full track and not just a clip and also then purchase the track.  I am not up to speed on the various costs but all pretty much of a muchness I would have thought.

I looked at spotify earlier, it might be my best bet, will have a look at how the price compares to hmv. thank you squiggle.

I don't download music that much, but when I do, always use Amazon or 7Digital.

I run itunes on m'pc and have had to download at times. However i much prefer to look around second hand or charity shops, or borrow. Itunes loads up any cd to your library and as long as you back the library up it's fine. I have about 90GB.
