The OP's suggestion of UB40 just proves how subjective music can be.

To me UB40 represent two excellent first albums "Signing Off" and "Present Arms" and reasonably good "Present Arms In Dub" then followed by less good and less commercially successful 'politically tinged' albums followed by the breakthrough commercial sell out album "Labour of Love" (I have to admit to my shame I bought "Red Red Wine"),

After that it was all down hill plodding commercial complacency reaching its nadir in cheesy covers of Elvis songs and a second desperate bite of the cherry with another Neil Diamond cover.

For me it's David Bowie, the man's a lyrical, musical and song writing genius (1971-1980).  Pretentious art school rock are criticisms that can be throw at Bowie, but IMO the imagination and vision of many of his songs and concepts will never be equaled - especially by the brain dead materialist generation of groups who want to clone their influences or earn big bucks by following an X Factor formula.

Many of his albums are patchy but overall the musical lyrical imagination is second to none.
