Yogi, Philip Barry wrote the theatre play The Philaddelphia Story specifically for Katherine Hepburn to star in. She also financed the staging of the play, taking a share of the profits instead of a salary. Howard Hughes bought the film rights as a gift for her and then have them to her, She sold the rights to Louis B Mayer but with the provision that she had a right of veto over producer, director, screenwriter, and cast. Besides being an outstanding actress she was a shrewd businesswoman.

The play was adapted into the musical High Society years later by John Patrick as screenwriter for the film and Cole Porter for the songs. That was in 1956.

Years later that film was adapted back into a stage musical by Arthur Kopt (the writing) and the music used the music and songs from the film but was adapted by Susan Birkenhead.

So you've seen all three versions

I was slightly surprised by the news today that the Church Commissioners (for the C of E) might take up the remnants of Wonga after being written to by Frank Field:

I know the Church Commissioners have been in the news re their shareholding in Amazon. It's not really news as the fact that they hold shares in it was clearly stated in their 2017 accounts. Also shown was Alphabet Inc which we know as Google. Those accounts also mention that amongst their engagements (where they engage with the companies they have shares in to try to get them to be more reponsible on areas such as the environment) last year they started an engagement on corporate tax. It's a 3 year project. It doesn't do into detail but I think that's where they are trying to get companies such as Amazon to be more responsible with their corporate taxes.

Good morning everyone, a mix of clouds and a tiny bit of blue sky this morning, quite a stiff breeze.  I'm keeping a close eye on it EL, still coughing and my grandson is also still coughing and he's had it 3 weeks now.  Time will tell, this is a bug with teeth.

Enjoy your day everyone

Take care and go back to your GP if the antibiotics don’t shift it.

There's a BBC documentary this evening called "King Arthur's Britain: The Truth Unearthed". This is the description in the Radio Times:

Despite the title, this involving new documentary doesn’t focus that heavily on a certain Mr Pendragon and his knights of the round table, instead delving into the murky historical period that Arthurian legends first sprang from – the Dark Ages.

Beginning at around 410BC following the departure of the Romans, this 200-year period famously saw British society and the economy collapse while bands of overseas invaders put the local Britons through hell (stylishly re-created using animation here), all while the written word nearly died out.

But how true is that interpretation? Professor Alice Roberts isn’t so sure, describing the Dark Ages as “one of the most mysterious and misunderstood periods in British history” – and as she uses the latest archaeological techniques to uncover new secrets, some fresh light is cast on the old stories.

That's a very bad mistake by the Radio Times. Of course it should read 410 AD.

Good morning everyone, again very cloudy with a bit of a breeze today. Better than I was thanks Summer, 2 more antibiotics to go, I am very hopeful that they have managed to knock it on the head but I will closely monitor the situation in case it shows signs of returning.  It's certainly been the most frightening bug I've ever had.

The two best known contestants in the 2016/17 University Challenge series were Eric Monkman and Bobby Seagull. Although neither of their teams won the final they both showed formidable knowledge of just about anything. They've made a short 4 episode series starting on BBC2 tonight called "Monkman & Seagull's Genius Guide to Britain" They tour around the country (tonight England) in search of hidden gems of British scientific and technological ingenuity.

I hope everyone has a good day

Summer, we wait to see if Wallace and Gromit will use that cheesegrater to get some cheese off the moon

Although there's a warning here for strong winds tonight and tomorrow, the maximum gust is forecast at 44 mph so I'm not expecting to be particularly affected. It's more likely to be exposed areas and higher up areas affected.

By the way, the notification emails of liked replies etc issue has returned for me. Although I have told Social Strata they have said that this may never get resolved. It's to do with the mail server this forum uses and the problems lies elsewhere so it's difficult for Social Strata to be able to do much. This must be affecting other forum members but not everyone. At least the red online alerts are still working.

Been a rather chaotic day. I had tried arranging the annual service & MOT for my car at Bristol Street Motors in Cheltenham as in previous years only to be told that they were so busy they can't take on any work until 17 October. Clearly they've got problems there. So I rang a local place and I'll get it done next Thursday.

And the huge client sent me some spreadsheets. I won't go into detail as it wouldn't interest anyone but there's quite a lot of extra work I will have to do as a result.
