Pancake Day! You have put me in the mood for pancakes. Buy them or make them? Decisions, decisions!

Good morning everyone. Weather is dry but overcast.

Moonie, last night's owl pics are seriously cute!

Have a good day, everyone.

Good morning everyone

Patchy blue sky here, no fog, no wind, rain is forecast by the end of the day.

Summer, the council's reply to me did not give a reason other than inferring that it was left because it was not by the kerbside.

Moonie, those are great owl pictures

I saw Flash Gordon once years ago and that was enough for me, George Lucas had hoped to make a film of Flash Gordon but discovered that the film rights had been bought by the film studio which eventually made it. Instead he made the original Star Wars.

Good morning everyone, typical EL they always want to infer that it is really your fault all along don't they?   I am going to need to call on their large items collection service soon as I have just ordered a new mattress.  I thought maybe a Tempur mattress may be nice, have you seen the price For a single it's over ÂĢ2,000 - had to have a quick lie down.

I think Sweet Summer Christmas Pancakes might cover most of the salient points   I was trying to work in a reference to owls but failed miserably

Have a good day everyone, moonie I am glad your team won but personally I would rather watch paint dry than watch a footie match

The thing that has really shocked me Yogi is the price of wallpaper nowadays.  There are some rolls around for around ÂĢ9 a roll, which still seems a little steep to me, but so many places don't seem to blink at throwing around prices of ÂĢ30+ per roll.  I am planning to have a fair bit of decorating done, I think I will be sticking to painted walls.

We noticed the same when we were decorating the back bedroom after son moved out. Hubby almost keeled over at the price of wallpaper.

We have been in this house near enough 40 years. I paint over the original embossed paper.
FlashGordon? My son was word and song perfect excepting that he would sing, "Flash! Saviour of the Open University!" And make it scan.
Fans of Star Wars must surely know that another three are on their way. Hopefully they will be better than the last lot.

Yogi, I did spot that password question and Jenstar has given the right answer. If not, Lori may be able to help.

My bin has just been emptied.

I've just returned from a dental checkup. One of the upper front teeth has ground down somewhat over the years and, as a preventative measure against breaking and having to be replaced with a denture, I will be having it crowned. Two stage process, first part in mid February, then the fitting 2 weeks later in early March. February and March are the quiet times for me work-wise, and I rather get it done at a time which suits me rather than when I'm busy. It's not cheap as my dentist is private rather than NHS.

Good morning
Bright now, after a foggy start.

Yogi, oh how well you know me lol
Homemade pancakes as much as time allows, but aren't Bessie's frozen ones are a delicious substitute
Ooh I might make some for breakfast tomorrow *adds eggs & milk to shopping list*

LOVE those owls from last night

Crikey squiggle, that's a lot of money for a single mattress I hope there's a comfy, cheaper alternative.
No wonder people do a feature wall with paper- imagine the cost of a whole room?!

@ the password reply and getting your bin emptied.

As it's a front tooth, getting it crowned is probably for the best - although, as you mentioned, it's not cheap.

I'm nipping out for a wee while but pancakes will be on the menu when I get back. With maple syrup.

I agree EL, preventative work will save trouble in the long term.  I have been so impressed with the private dentist I changed to for me and both my grandsons, the guy is so thorough.  It honestly bears no relation to the NHS dentist I was with before, who were increasingly charging for things like scale and polish as private work anyway.  I am glad your bin has been emptied now.

I think I've found a good, much cheaper alternative, mattress.  I have an adjustable bed and so found a firm that specialises in mattresses for these.  It is foam with a layer of memory foam on the top, and I have opted to have the massage option for ÂĢ120 extra.

My grandson went through the whole house like a whirlwind, the carpets are looking beautiful and they smell so fresh.  I didn't have to lift a finger.  I have a pale green carpet in the downstairs bedroom and I thought it was one I would have to replace, it has come up so well that I even think I might be able to keep it now.

I thought it was quite reasonable as an addition.  They have a range of mattresses.  I'll see what I think when it comes, they do have some good feedback and I know they have been in business for many years because when we bought our bed we considered buying from them and in the end plumped for buying from Dunlopillo.

Squiggle, well done on finding your mattress and I hope you are happy with it. And well done to your grandson on his carpet cleaning

It's clouded over here this afternoon but the rain hasn't started yet.

I am reasonably on top of clients work and expect to meet the 31 January tax return deadline without too much headache. There's still bits of information which I'm waiting for from clients but I'm not expecting that to be a problem.

The only client who looks as if the deadline will be missed will be someone who brought in his papers to me early August. I had done most of the work before the end of August but had 2 queries. I wrote to him at the time, sent a reminder in October, sent another reminder in early January but have had no reply. I warned him in the January letter about penalties if the return was filed late and made it clear that I would not file the return until he has dealt with my queries and approved the return. I know HMRC will have sent him a warning letter so he cannot say that he is not aware of it. My guess is that he doesn't have enough money to pay the tax so has gone down with ostrich syndrome.

By the way, if I just guessed the answers to my queries and filed a tax return without his approval that would be very wrong of me and I would get into deep trouble. Accountants who file returns which clients haven't approved are likely to face serious consequences such as getting thrown out of their professional organisation.

Yogi, anyone who can't pay their tax bills on time should contact HMRC to discuss it with them to see if they can come to an instalment plan. HMRC will expect them to have made efforts to raise the money. If HMRC agrees an instalment plan they will expect taxpayers to adhere to the plan. People who mess about with the HMRC won't get much sympathy from them.

HMRC make it clear that people are expected to put money aside during the course of the year so that they've got the money to pay the tax on time. I always advise my clients to do that and also to get their papers to me reasonably quickly so that they know what tax they will have to pay in plenty of time rather than leaving it to late and for the bill to come as a nasty shock.

HMRC also make it clear that they expect taxpayers to set money aside to be able to pay their accountant. Inability to pay an accountant would not be an acceptable reason by HMRC for not filing tax returns on time.

That's what I wondered, whether they offered a payment plan.

In that case, the client who is adopting an ostrich attitude, really ought to contact them.
