I don't know if you remember that last August I posted a link to a BBC news story about a Chinese baby who had been sold by a doctor but that the baby had been rescued and returned to the parents.

On the news today, it was announced that the doctor has been sentenced. She was sentenced to death but with a two year reprieve. It is expected that this will be commuted to life imprisonment. She was tried for selling 7 babies, 6 were rescued, but 1 sadly died.

The sadness that this awful woman will have caused to those poor families, simply dreadful, I'm glad they stopped her.

Good morning everyone

Very cloudy here but dry at present, rain is forecast later.

In last night's Death in Paradise the old puzzle about a man, a fox, a goose and some feed was mentioned a few times. But they didn't give an answer.

The puzzle using a chicken instead of a goose is:

A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river.

He has a rowboat, and it can only carry him and one other thing.

If the fox and the chicken are left together, the fox will eat the chicken.

If the chicken and the corn are left together, the chicken will eat the corn.

How does the man do it?

If you want to check out how it's done:

I think the chicken could eat the corn, then the fox could eat the chicken and the man and the fox could get into the boat and row across.

PB is due to arrive at 9am, so I am off to get organised.

Have a good day, everyone.

But the fox would be so heavy that the boat would sink

I hope you have a good PB day

 Drat, I thought I had it sussed!

Thanks El, just waiting on her arrival.

Good morning everyone, the fox, the goose and the corn riddle, Yogi I don't think your answer is maths so much as massacre   There was a fiendish Japanese version of this doing the rounds 3 or 4 years ago, drove me and my friend potty trying to figure out the solution, they say it's given to every Japanese job applicant, don't know how true that is.  If you want to give it a go

There's a notorious puzzle called Caliban's Will which was created by Henry Dudeney.

The puzzle is a logic one and reads:

When Caliban's will was opened it was found to contain the following clause:

"I leave ten of my books to each of Low, Y.Y., and 'Critic,' who are to choose in a certain order:

(1) No person who has seen me in a green tie is to choose before Low;

(2) If Y.Y. was not in Oxford in 1920 the first chooser never lent me an umbrella;

(3) If Y.Y. or 'Critic' has second choice, 'Critic' comes before the one who first fell in love."

Unfortunately Low, Y.Y., and 'Critic' could not remember any of the relevant facts; but the family solicitor pointed out that, assuming the problem to be properly constructed (i.e. assuming it to contain no statement superfluous to its solution) the relevant data and order could be inferred.

What was the prescribed order of choosing; and who lent Caliban an umbrella?

The reason why it is notorious is that Dudeney's answer to the puzzle is incorrect and so the puzzle cannot be solved.

Apparently, if condition 1 above is amended to:

1. No person who has seen me in a green tie is to choose after 'Critic',

the puzzle can be solved.

(just don't ask me what the answer is though )

Yogi, I hope you get well and truly 'cuddled' by PB today. Lots and lots with some to spare too

See you soon

Good to see you back Moonie, get well soon, we miss you.

Yes, lots of cuddles today - she is having a nap atm. Cut her first tooth yesterday, she is growing up so quickly!

I liked the logical answer to the puzzle, El, but I still think my massacre solution was a good one.
