Good morning everyone, we have had quite a bit of rain.  I am glad you slept a little better EL, these things take a long time to heal and it must be very frustrating for you.

Summer please try not to overdo it, it is such a tense time for all of you.  Did you manage to convince Mr Summer to let you take his place tonight?  I hope MiL enjoyed the visit from the cousins.

I've just returned from doing a spot of M&S shopping. I walked into town, got some cash from the machine and went into M&S. It's the first time I've been into the Gloucester one since the replacement store opened. It looks about a third of the size of either of the ones in Cheltenham. As I can only carry one bag at this time I got about half what I would normally get. Then I caught the bus back.

Squiggle, I hope to go to the Co-op tomorrow for a few items such as milk. That should keep me going until Monday/Tuesday next week, then do another small M&S shop to keep me going to the following week-end. I am trying to avoid needing to go anywhere over the weekend as that sports/music festival is likely to make going out almost impossible.

El Loro

In that 1939 film Love Affair I saw recently there was a song which was first sung by 3 young girls and then reprised towards the end by a young choir which included the girls. None of them are included in the cast list though it is known that the young choir included the Robert Mitchell Boy choir. It is possible that the 3 girls were some of the Brian Sisters but not known for certain. It is also possible that the youngest of the three was dubbed as their singing is remarkable from someone as young as that.

It doesn't teally matter as it's a very cute and pleasant song.

This weekend's old films on BBC2 don't seem to include any exceptional films. There's Government Girl (1943) which is a wartime comedy/propaganda which stars Olivia de Havilland who had to make the film under her contract but apparently didn't want to. Then there's Days of Glory (1944) which is a war film notable mainly because it was Gregory Peck's debut.

The one on Sunday is called Spirit of the People (1940). The Radio Times just describes this as a historical drama with Paymond Massey, Gene Lockhart and Ruth Gordon. It fails to mention that this is a biopic of the early life of Abraham Lincoln. It probably isn't as well known as Young Mr Lincoln which was made a year earlier and starred Henry Fonda. I think Spirit of the People may be worth watching as Raymond Massey should be good as Lincoln. Ruth Gordon plays the future Mrs Lincoln (and a very different role to the part she played 28 years later in Rosemary's Baby). (As an aside I have never seen Rosemary's Baby at the specific wish of my mother that we never would)

Yes, it was. I'm not aware that my mother ever saw it, but at the time it was much in the news and my mother would have got her views from that. My mother rarely expressed disapproval of specific films. The other two were On the Beach (which I saw having forgotten that my mother had put her veto on) and Cabaret (apparently she saw Liza Minnelli doing something about the film on some daytime television programme and she was truly shocked by what she saw but never said what).

I don't watch modern horror films at all. The closest I get to would be something like The Others (Nicole Kidman) but that's hardly typical modern horror.
