There's a film on this afternoon on Film4 called The Rochdale Pioneers. Starts at 5.45 and it's the true story set in 1844 about a group of working class people who get together to change the unfair society they live in by raising enough money to buy their own shop. Having taken an Economic History O level many years ago I knew instantly that this was about how the Co-op came into existence.

The film was produced by the Co-op British Youth Film Academy. From the trailer I could see that John Henshaw and John McArdle are in it, though most of the cast are local to Rochdale and Manchester.

Trailer:

If you saw The Paradise last week, you would remember Denise's idea of forming a bit like a co-op amongst the local shop-owners.

Aww, that was nice, Summer. I observed it too.

I bet your costume will be much better than anything you could have bought.

I'm on reality tv overload tonight. It's been Strictly, then X Factor and now it's I'm A Celebrity.

Good morning everyone, the internet was very slow yesterday and is still slow to load this morning.  I couldn't get on until after I had seen your link EL so I missed that film, it looked good too.

Sounds like you are doing well with the elf costume Summer, looking forward to seeing the picture.

Rainy again this morning, my garden already feels like a giant sponge, surely we can't get much more rain?

squiggle

Squiggle, in the last 159 years, this part of the country is currently the 16th wettest year on record and that is on the basis that there is zero rainfall for the rest of the year. Although by the end of the year it will go down as one of the wettest years, I don't think it will break the record for the wettest year ever. The Met Office seem to think that the southern part of the UK will tend to become drier but colder.

Well done on the costume Summer

Yes that mini ipad for granddaughter looks good, a bit pricey considering her age , and other things i am getting her, but i think she will get a lot of use from it and it is educational too as well as fun.
I will try to catch up with that film El, i find things like that interesting.

Enjoyed the Jungle, liking Charlie too, didnt think i would. I like Brian too, but i can imagine he could wear on the nerves after a while. Helen is going to rattle my cage tho!

In the local paper today:

IT was raining teddy bears in Gloucester Cathedral.

The Golden Valley Kite Fliers were at the city landmark on Saturday, along with dozens of parachutes they had made.

Children were invited to go along with their teddy bears, pay a donation of ÂĢ1 to Children in Need, and then witness them fly from the Nave before making an effort to catch them as they parachuted slowly to earth.

Stephen Haines, a committee member at the kite group, said: "It was great, everyone had so much fun.

"And it was for a really good cause too, we raised ÂĢ750."

The group were in the Cathedral from 10am to 4pm.

"It is funny watching them try to catch their bears, we had a few adults taking part too," he added.

"We had bears of all shapes and sizes and we made sure they all got a big hug after their jump!"

  1. ready, teddy, go! Robert and Abigail Dorehill with Stephen Haines.

In The Paradise slot next week is this new series - Last Tango in Halifax:

Celia Dawson and Alan Buttershaw haven’t seen each other for 60 years. When they’re reunited via Facebook, they arrange to meet, and discover that it was an unfortunate twist of fate that prevented them from getting together all those years ago. Their passionate feelings for each other are instantly reignited.

When Alan’s car is stolen, he and Celia become involved in a car chase. Celia catches up with the thieves, but while in hot pursuit her car ploughs straight into the back of Alan’s, and both cars are written off. Stranded in Skipton, Celia and Alan ring their respective daughters to pick them up, and find themselves spending even more time together than they anticipated.

Apart from being in their mid-40s and having tortuous domestic lives, arrogant, repressed Caroline and happy-go-lucky Gillian have almost nothing in common. Both of them have had spectacularly bad days, and so when they meet in Skipton to rescue their parents, neither is in the mood for any nonsense.

Seconds before they’re introduced to each other, they fight over a parking space and insult each other viciously. Then they go inside the pub, where Celia and Alan introduce them to each other and announce that they’re getting married. The two are going to be sisters-in-law.

Celia Dawson is played by Anne Reid, Alan Buttershaw by Derek Jacobi, Caroline by Sarah Lancashire (She's taking over the Tuesday 9pm slot ) and Gillian by Nicola Walker.

I think it's in 6 parts. It's written by Sally Wainwright who based the story on the experience of her mother Dorothy who was put in touch with her childhood sweetheart Alec via Friends Reunited after being widowed at the ago of 75. Alec had also recently been widowed. The couple fell in love all over again and got married.

I've been listening to the Radio 4 programme PM which is a 1 hour news programme. As you can imagine, the main item has been about the ongoing BBC mess going on about the amount being paid out to the ex-Director General and why so much has been paid. The BBC trust say they've done it to expedite matters, the politicans are saying it's unacceptable, and the temporary new DG says he has no say in the payment.

This was immediately followed by a trailer for the new series of "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue"

The likes of Starbucks and Amazon have been under parliamentary scrutiny today as to why they have huge sales in the UK but pay very little corporation tax. The parliamentary commitee have not been too impressed by the answers given. The Amazon representative was criticised for not being able to given satisfactory answers and told that Amazon should send someone else who knew what they were talking about.

Starbucks in the UK pay large amounts to Switzerland for the purchase of the coffee which it says is based there. Switzerland has a low corporation tax rate which is why it's cheaper in tax terms for Starbucks to have low profits in the UK and high profits in Switzerland.

I wonder if the government will instruct HMRC to look into this. Part of the existing tax legislation covers what is called Transfer Pricing. This enables HMRC to investigate situations where UK businesses are saving tax by putting artificial prices on their transactions with foreign companies owned by the same outfit which owns the UK company. HMRC can adjust corporation tax profits upwards where they consider that the prices are artificial.

I saw that on the news. The committee were most definitely not impressed by the answers they were getting.

That bit about the trailer for 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' made me laugh if GE has any morals at all he will hand back a big chunk of that payoff, 54 days in the job!

I don't it was deliberate to place the trailer there but I wouldn't be surprised if things like Have I Got News for You pick it up.

I'm fine, thanks Summer.

@ Bramble. Now I've got a mental picture of you, with lick marks all over your fake tan legs.

Glad you feeling better Yogi x

Hope the tanning is going well Summer, and Miss Bramble is behaving! Didnt really see much of Charlie last night, just that irritating Helen.

Grandaughter,s nursery doing the Nativity , and we have been practising the Carols. The nursery gave out print-outs of all the songs and words. i only just noticed at the bottom of the page that i have to make her angel costume I have been out and bought some fairy wings, silver tinsel and a white sheet. Going try to make a dress, as such. Any ideas how to make the halo?? Or shall i just put tinsel around her head? They not doing it till 7th Dec so i have time. Not sure why they doing it so early, maybe because of the party they having too. x

FM

Skylark, I found this on a How to make a child's angel costume webpage:

"Your little angel needs a halo and there are several different ways to make them. One way is to simply twist together tinsel pipe cleaners of silver or gold and lay the halo directly on the head. You can also make a circle of pipe cleaners with a stem that allows the halo to be raised above the head. The stem is attached with a clip or bobby pins then hidden with some hair."

I saw one, where they had attached the halo to an Alice band.

I was going to suggest what yogi has^ aaaaw she's going to look adorable, I always wanted a cool part like Mary or the Angel! I was the inn keeper instead. I consoled myself by thinking "well Mary had dark hair, that's why I didn't get chosen" Of course I have no idea what colour her hair was, but it is usually dark in pictures of her.. I've just unpicked all the fur off my Santa costume (it was getting old and the stitching was coming loose anyway) and am going to sew it on my elf dress, I need some silver ruffley tulle.. But I think I could just use silver tinsel instead Skylark I hope you enjoy making the costume I shared the cost of a new sewing machine with my g'ma and when she passed away I got to keep it, I always think of her and smile when I use it El- what's iplayer desktop?! Can i put it on my iPad?
