Skylark, I'm glad church went well yesterday. Our church does the same, coffee, tea or squash & biscuits at the back of the church after the main service so that people can chat and new people can feel more at ease.

I had a quick look at the film and television versions of Top Cat and the voices are done by different people as you thought. It's not surprising as the series was made 50 years ago. The series was very popular in Mexico which is why they decided to make a film version there. They used one set of actors for the Spanish version and another set for the English version.

Top Cat is called Don Gato there.

Yes, the series was made in 1961-2. I saw it when it was first shown on BBC in 1962. It had to be renamed Boss Cat in the UK because there was a popular brand of cat food called Top Cat.

The series was inspired by what became known as The Phil Silvers Show (Sergeant Bilko) which ran from 1955 to 1959 in the States and even now sometimes still gets shown here on television. I never took to that series and preferred Top Cat. Maurice Gosfield was in both series and Arnold Stang who voiced Top Cat in the series sounded very like Phil Silvers.

Mammy Two Shoes (that was how she was referred to) was based on Hattie McDaniel (though voiced by Lilian Randolph). Hattie McDaniel was famous for her role in Gone with the Wind for which she won Best Supporting Actress. When Hattie McDaniel died in 1952, they decided to retire Mammy Two Shoes and replace her with a 50's style suburban white couple called George and Joan.

Good morning everyone

Although it's dry here, it is oppressively cloudy here and rain is expected later.

Yesterday evening my neighbours demolished their garage and it's now in bits in a pile.

I should explain that the garage was old, in bad condition, and the hatched door at the front was dangerous as when lifted up it could come back down too easily. The neighbours are replacing it and the pile of bits is in a skip

El Loro

Good morning everyone, the rain is light and patchy so far today, I think it's on Thursday that the real nasty weather is expected

Holds out soup bowl hopefully in Yogi's direction

home made soup how delicious.

I bet that old garage was a bit of an eyesore EL so it's good that it's gone now, will they be putting up another one do you think?  I hope everyone manages to dodge the rain.

squiggle

Squiggle, I hope the weather is not too bad on Thursday for you or for anyone. I'm wondering what it will be like on Saturday when the church fete is on. The most critical time is between 1 and 3 in the afternoon. The fete opens at 2, if the weather is poor between 1 and 2 people are more likely not to come, and the bulk of the income comes in the first hour.

I wonder what type of soup Yogi is preparing

Squiggle, the old garage was a bit of an eyesore. It was there when I moved here some 20 years ago, and it had been many years since it was used as a garage. It was used to store things. I think the neighbours will be getting a replacement garage. There's a fair amount of work needed to be done by them. The outside rendering certainly needs to be done as it is in poor condition and damp has been getting in their back bedroom as a result. The drive is in bad condition. It's a shared drive so I will have to contribute 50% of the cost though the neighbours have used in mainly for parking their cars. They don't have a forecourt but I do.

Skylark, I know there's a garden party there today for the Queen and invited people at Holyroodhouse. The really big event seems to be on Thursday:

During a ceremony on Thursday the Queen will appoint her grandson Prince William to the Order of the Thistle.

A pipe band parade will be hosted on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh to mark the royal visit.

There will also be bands, dancers and drummers from community groups across the country heading down the Mile in the wake of the Thistle Service in St Giles' Cathedral.

It's on iPlayer if you are interested.

I've just watched the programme, El.

While the cold calling nuisance calls are extremely annoying, the scamming calls made me so angry. Something needs to be done about these lowlife types, and fast.

The Information Commissioner seems to be a toothless dog - completely useless, imo.

Yogi, the problem is that the scammers seem to be ringing from outside the UK so unless the UK government can encourage the governments of those countries to clamp down there's not a lot which can be done.

Although not directly connected with the scammers, it would not surprise me if the criminals in this news items I spotted today are in some way connected.

I checked out the link. There seems to be an infinite number of scams, it's quite depressing.

On the news today:

The patriotic anthem Jerusalem was originally intended to have a less rousing opening, according to a musicologist from Durham University.

Its first verse was written for a single voice and not the grand choral opening for which it is now famous, claims Professor Jeremy Dibble.

I noticed this morning when I drew the curtains open that my neighbours had put the rusty iron struts from the old demolished garage on the ground next to the skip on their front lawn. I knew that scrap metal characters were often in the area. So as my neighbours would be at work during the day I asked them if they would be happy if scrap metals characters were to ask if they could take them away, and they said Yes.

A couple of hours later I heard the sound of a scrap metal van hailing out and a couple of moments later I heard a knock on my neighbours' door. So I popped round and told the man that my neighbours would be happy for them to take the metal struts away. So they did, and also took a bit of corrugated metal roofing.

Whilst I was finishing my lunch there was a knock at my door. I opened it and there was the scrap metal man. Behind him were a policeman and a policewoman.  A neighbour had seen him taking the metal away and reported this to the police. I corroborated to the policewoman what had happened and that this was legit. In the meantime the scrap metal man and his mates were being questioned by the policeman, later joined by 2 other policemen about an unconnected matter. I don't know what that was about but it seemed to go on for about 20 minutes before it ended amicably and everyone went on their way.

Of course there is a lot of metal being stolen around the country so the police have every reason to be suspicious about scrap metal characters.

Poor old Officer Dibble, Top Cat certainly gave him the runaround.

Hubby loves Jerusalem.

Good to see the police are keep an eye out for scrap metals thieves, I wish they would be more vigilant here. It's awful to see drain covers etc going missing. Of course they are great when it's permitted because they make money and the person doesn't have to pay out to have the council come collect the scrap.. I get when I see fly tipping too

Yes i may take Granddaughter up town to see it all x

its the same here with metal being stolen and sold for scrap. Was talking to the security guard in Tesco today about the shortage of the smaller shopping trolleys. He says they get stolen , people saw them to bits then sell them for scrap

Soup sounds lovely Yogi, going to make some tomorrow

Good job you were around to put the police straight, El, otherwise the scrap merchants might have been carted off.

There seems to be a big problem with theft of scrap metal, I remember there was a news story a few months ago where they were reporting thefts of drain covers.

Is anyone watching Emmerdale, atm. I feel so sorry for Ashley, the villagers are an unforgiving bunch and have very short memories. (Yes, I do know it's not real).

I agree Yogi.  I couldn't help noticing yesterday that the scripts are definitely not being written by someone with any knowledge of Christianity, or God.  They have had poor Ashley lying like a trouper and Laurel's attitude to him has been positively evil.  It's impossible not to get caught up in the storylines isn't it?

It is, Squiggle. Sometimes I think they have work experience kids in as scriptwriters, they get things so wrong.

I get really cross when they dramatically alter characters and have them behaving completely out of character, purely to drive a particular storyline.

Emmerdale is getting worse. There is no way Ashley would be in the gutter. For a small community where he was the Vicar for years, not all would turn their back on him. Plus wouldnt he be entitled to benefits, he has paid his contributions. Yes i know its not real...but...

On another subject, its incredibly humid here. Got all the windows open, not a breathe of air

Agree about Ashley.

I do like the way Nicola is growing fond of Elliott.

It's very humid here too.
