Good morning everyone

It's going to be a mix of sunshine and heavy showers here today.

Summer, I see you are getting ready for Wimbledon

If you saw Silk last night it's just possible you might have recognised a couple of the actors who was in it.

The man who played the accused security guard was John Salthouse. I remember him from The Bill back in 1987 when he played Roy Galloway:

It's more likely you recognised the new student there who's played by Shaun Evans. Intriguing that he had quit the police force as we previously saw him as Morse in Endeavour. And he still looks like the younger Malcolm McDowell.

El Loro

Good morning everyone, a freshly washed morning here after all the rain

I am afraid all the Morse stuff goes right over my head as I've never watched.

Nice to see you back with us Ros I hope you feel refreshed after the long weekend, I know I do I've slept very well and I must have been very tired.

No hope of a new computer Summer but I shall be formatting the hard drive on my PC this week after I've decided what to back up and that is always a nice feeling, a fresh clean hard drive.  Enforced on me though I'm afraid by my grandson visiting a dodgy website and we picked up a back-door virus that I cannot eradicate by normal means.  I have tried with 3 or 4 different anti-virus detectors and although they can see it, it is of the sort that re-installs itself.  I have even tried editing the Registry with no luck, so formatting is the only answer.  A real faff.

Good morning overcast but mild here, it rained through the night Squiggle, that sounds like such a chore I've had to do it myself a couple of times in the past, I picked up a Trojan virus once and it just kept coming back a fresh hard drive feels as good as fresh bed linen though, it'll be worth it El I like Wimbledon, my g'ma used to take 2 weeks holiday from work for it every year. She'd get her chores done early and from noon onwards it was Wimbledon non stop
~Sparkling Summer~

Good morning everyone. It's raining, and I believe it has to rain for at least a week. No drought up here.

@ Ros snaffling.

Summer, your grandma must have been a real tennis addict. I was trying to figure out why I haven't watched tennis in recent years and I've realised it was because I was watching BB live feed. Maybe now we don't have LF, I might start watching tennis again.

Squiggle, that virus sounds like a real pain, I hope you manage to get it sorted.

El, I noticed the new pupil in Silk was the guy from Endeavour. I liked him in that, and I think I'm going to like him in Silk too. I'm still drooling over Rupert Penry-Jones. Dervla Kerwin is one lucky lady to be married to him. *sighs*

I remember John Salthouse from The Bill, he played the first DI and he had red hair.

I liked the character of George Garfield in The Bill, I've seen Huw pop up in a few programmes since.

Keira is still not quite herself. I've given her some scrambled eggs this morning and I'll see how she is with that. She was meant to go to the groomers today but I phoned and explained that she's unwell and the lady rearranged the appointment for next week. She is an ex- veterinary nurse and was very understanding.

I've seen the blackbird (well I think it's the same blackbird as they tend to stick to their own territory) and he's hopping about fine.

Yogi19

Squiggle, if you know the name of the virus that's on your computer it may be worth having a look on the Symantec site where they have a list of their own removal tools for some specific viruses. As far as I know you don't need to have Symantec antivirus s/w on your computer, these removal tools are standalone.

http://www.symantec.com/securi...nse/removaltools.jsp

If you have to reformat the hard drive, make sure you have the disks and CDs with all the systems software (Windows, your internet service provider disc, etc) and all the drivers for stuff like your graphics card - the things which came with the computer. It's a huge job to do, and its something which if I ever had to do it, I would get the people from my local computer shop to do rather than to do it myself.

El Loro

Thanks EL, I have binned the note I made of the files, I will retrieve it and check that link.  I have backed up everything now and I will make sure I have all the necessary drivers etc.  I am daunted by the task but pretty confident I can do it, I will approach it cautiously, leave it a day or so in case I think of anything I've missed.

squiggle

I checked the virus on that site (it is BDS/Gendal.181195) but it didn't seem to recognise it.  I know that it is a back door trojan but apart from that I don't know much about it.  As I said before it seems impossible to shift and I have downloaded 2 'guaranteed to shift it' anti-virus applications that failed, so I think formatting is the only option I am left with.

squiggle

I didn't do the latest anti-virus checks in safe mode, and it is something I will consider doing before I re-format EL, thanks but I rather think Summer is right and that the best way forward is to re-format.  I will take my time and check I have all the original discs.  I have already backed up the files for the printer, the scanner, my anti-virus, firewall, Firefox etc etc etc.  I was quite horrified when I looked into these backdoor viruses to see that once it's safely installed it then infects other computers worldwide from your computer, and these viruses are getting more sophisticated and complex all the time.

I hope no-one here knows anyone affected by the outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Edinburgh. 40 cases now suspected.

The BBC understands that tests have been carried out at four sites.

They include the cooling towers at;

  • North British Distillery, Wheatfield Road, Gorgie
  • McFarlan Smith (pharmaceuticals), Wheatfield Road, Gorgie
  • Aegon (insurance), where towers are used to cool servers, in Lochside Crescent, South Gyle
  • and Burtons Foods, Bankhead Place, Sighthill

Hi everyone x
Been busy with granddaughter today , so its the first chance i have had to get on.

Good luck with your internet problems squiggle x
Poor Keira, hope she is back to her old self soon x
Summer, what are you like !

Yes, what a worry re the Legionnaire outbreak. There was a press conference at 3pm with Nicola Sturgeon (Scottish Health Secretary) and NHS Lothian. They appear to have found the infected water cooling towers and they have been disinfected. Giving the incubation period, its expected to peak over the next few days. To date 16 are still in ICU and 2 in the HDU. 2 have mild form and have been discharged. Others in main wards and seem to be doing ok.  My concerns were for nana and family as they live in that area, but they appear to be fine. I can also say that reports of the Edinburgh Royal running out of anti-biotics is tosh. The way the stock control is handled would make that impossible. If it were to be the case, fresh supplies would be found within about 20 minutes anyway.

Wont be back on tonight as got sister coming for tea. She wants to hear the wee ones holiday stories.
Have a nice evening all

FM

Good evening all. Going to camp out in the BB thread - although we now have a sticky and another thread for tonight's show, so not sure which one I'll be in.

Keira managed to eat some porridge tonight and seems a little bit brighter, I think she's on the mend.

Skylark, thanks for the update on the Legionnaire's outbreak. Hubby goes mad at that "expert" Pennington, who, in his opinion, is inclined to scaremonger.

Yogi19

Good morning everyone

Yogi, I'm glad Keira is getting better

I've taped Lewis but haven't seen it yet.

It won't come as any surprise to anyone but it's been raining here. At present it's light but is expected to get heavier in the afternoon and also windier. I have to go to a funeral at church this afternoon. The woman who was the church secretary for almost as long as I was treasurer died last week - she had been ill for some time with heart problems.

El Loro

Good morning everyone, rainy and cold here.

I'm glad to hear that Keira is on the mend, it will probably be a few days before she is her old self.

I hope the funeral goes well EL and that the loved ones she left behind will be able to bear up.

I am so shocked that there isn't a tighter control on the discharge from these water towers.  Commonsense tells you that in these circumstances strict hygiene controls must be in place and must be rigorouly monitored.  I hope that there will be far fewer new cases than they fear and that Pennington is really a scare-monger, there are many of those about in the last few years

It's batten down the hatches for very strong winds for us over the next few days so I hope it's better where you are.

Yogi I wake early during this time of year, it's the light. I love it though I'm a slug at getting out of bed in winter. I woke at 4.30 this morning but chose to pull the duvet over my head and sleep in longer, I would suffer this afternoon otherwise How's Keira this morning? Squiggle I quite agree, water is such an important thing and I'm shocked how poorly it's been controlled. El I do hope the funeral goes well and that everyone is alright, it's not easy saying goodbye to a friend
~Sparkling Summer~

Hi everyone

Sorry to hear of the death of your friend El

Poor Keira, hope she is feeling better Yogi x

My sister phoned earlier to say she and her hubby and his family family knew the chap who died from Legionnaires. Apparently i met him at a birthday party years ago, but cant recall him . His family are just in bits, as you can imagine.
As i live in Edinburgh, i can say we are not a city locked in fear, as some trashy newspapers would have you believe! Yes there is concern and worry from people who live and work around that area, and from people who were in the area celebrating Hearts FC winning the Scottish Cup, but no hysteria from what i can see. Nicola Sturgeon is getting leaflets printed so people know the facts about the outbreak and how it is transmitted. It will hopefully stop wrong information being printed by some media, who do love to put fear in people by insane headlines! I heard some enterprising person was selling bottled water in Princes Street, until the Police moved him on, telling people it was safe to drink water ! There is always one

its very humid here, just now, expecting heavy rain tonight. Hopefully it will clear the air

FM

It's been raining here since lunchtime.

I saw my blackbird again and he seems fine (I am convinced it's the same one). Keira had some breakfast this morning - proper dog food this time and so far, so good.

Skylark, I saw a pic of the man who died of Legionnaire's in the papers. His poor family must be heartbroken.

Re the bottled water seller, there's always someone trying to make a fast buck out of someone else's misfortune.

Yogi19

Thats lovely, Yogi, that your blackbird, and i am sure it is, is well and visiting you x
Hopefully Keira is on the mend

Yes very sad about the chap who died, it was very sudden. He was well known around the building sites, as is the case here. Edinburgh is a small place really. He was a very proud granddad, and they will miss him terribly x

FM

I've just come back from the funeral which went well. Most of the hymns were the standard hymns used at funerals, the only surprising choice (which was chosen by the family) was "O come, all ye faithful" which I've never heard at a funeral before. There were refreshments in the church after the service. Normally the church hall would have been used but was unavailable today as it was being used for giving blood.

The rain hasn't been too bad today, though the wind is starting to strengthen and pay peak tomorrow afternoon with gusts up to 50 mph, but not as strong as some places.

Skylark, some of the press has a lot to answer for with their scaremongering. A few weeks ago when there had been a lot of rain in the Gloucestershire area, the national press were having scare stories about Tewkesbury about to be flooded when we knew that the flood risk was nowhere near the same level as when there were the major floods in July 2007. As a result of the scare stories about Tewkesbury, local businesses were suffering because visitor numbers fell. I expect that the same is happening in Edinburgh.

El Loro

Hi El, glad the funeral went well. Havent heard O Come all Ye Faithful either at a funeral, i presume that was a favourite of her,s so that was nice wasnt it? Bless her x

re.scaremongering, no it isnt useful nor helpful, and i am sure it will affect people booking now for the Edinburgh Festival, which attracts people from all over the world and certainly helps the economy.. I am sure businesses in Tewkesbury werent well pleased, especially when they are small businesses relying on tourist trade. I suppose headlines have to be dramatic to sell papers, but i do wish the reporters would think first, or maybe thats asking too much!
