Good morning everyone

I'm late on this morning as the broadband was out. I rang Virgin and after a time got through, it seems as if there was some maintenance work going on in the area but they said it would be done by noon and it came back on a few minutes ago. I know Virgin are in the process of doubling the speed in my area at some point between April and June. It hasn't happened yet, but the maintenance could be connected with that.

Yogi, I hope the dentist can fit you in before the long weekend, but it may be sensible to use mouthwash in the mean time to ward off infection, unless that is too painful.

Summer, a lovely video of Bramble and the rabbits

Summer, yes I am on Virgin. I've been with them for about 20 months now and during that time there have been 3 instances where there has been connection problems - in all 3 instances the problem lasted for only a few hours and has been problems in my area rather than my router playing up so I can't complain too much. It's not like it was in the past when I had Orange and at times had no connection for days at a time.

In today's local paper:

WHEN Hartpury College lecturer Arthur Farminer was filling in his weekly Codecracker puzzle, he needed some help.

Little did he expect it in the form of Chas, the family's ginger tabby cat who loves disrupting any form of work.

"We love Chas to bits but he does like jumping on homework, keyboards or at any moment you are trying to concentrate," said Podsmead resident Arthur, who is 65 next week.

"I was trying to work out the last couple of lettersin the Weekend Citizen's Codecracker and Chas kept putting his paw on top of the puzzle. Every time I moved it away he just put it back again and it was only then I realised he was trying to help." Chas' perseverance was in fact intended as a helpful intervention – the missing word was 'paw'.

Summer, what a brilliant video of Bramble and the bunnies. It's great that they all get on well together.

The tooth which broke has a filling in it. It's part of one side of the tooth which has broken off, but the filling is still intact. If I chew on the other side, I think it will be okay over the weekend - if not, there's always the Dental Hospital.

I'll use the mouthwash as you suggest, El. There doesn't seem to be any pain from hot or cold liquid, so it should be okay.

Good afternoon everyone.    It's been raining here in the last few hours and the forecast for the weekend in our area is poor.  Not sure if we will make it down to ther holiday home or not.

Sorry I've not been about.  Been so busy.  Have enjoyed reading back over the thread.  Glad the wedding went well Sweet.

I'm not sure if I've told you or not (don't think I have) but I found that a little bird has been building it's nest in one of my hanging flower baskets.  Odd place to build a nest don't you think?  Hubby thinks it's a bluetit.  I've only seen the bird once and it was small, but it left the nest so quickly that I was unable to make out what it was.  So far there are four eggs waiting to hatch.  The bird seems to have laid one each evening over the past four days.  Not sure if there will be anymore.  I'm surprised that any bird should want to build it's nest just outside my front door where there is so much "people traffic".

If I don't get back again I hope you all enjoy the Jubilee weekend.  I've set the Sky+ to record everything just incase I don't get chance to watch while we are away (if we go that is)!!  Love you all.

Good morning everyone

Cloudy but dry for the time being. There's some hope that the pageant on the Thames tomorrow will miss the heaviest of the rain.

It seems that Cuba parents have a liking for choosing unusual names for their children.

For instance:

  • Usnavi - US Navy
  • Noslenis - Nelson backwards, plus I and S
  • Yaniel - Daniel... but with a Y
  • Oldanier - Reinaldo backwards
  • Dayesi - Yes in Russian (da), English (yes) and Spanish (si)
  • Meylin - brand of canned meat

Good morning everyone, a nice morning but loads of rain later.

Layers Skylark is what you need, hope you miss any rain showers and you are not too warm or cold.

I wonder whether this passion for silly names will ever pass, it's funny to think of pensioners in this country being called Chardonnay, Kyle and Tiffany

I hope everyone has a lovely relaxing bank holiday weekend whatever you are doing and wherever you are.

Squiggle, although Kyle and Chardonnay are a bit odd, Tiffany is a very good name. It's the English equivalent of the Greek name Theophania and used to be given to girls born on the Feast of Theophania. Theophania is the greek word for manifestation or appearance of God.

The Feast of Theophania takes place on 6th of January and is now known as the Feast of the Epiphany. I've known someone who sometimes comes to our church for the best part of 30 years and she's called Tiffany.

I like the name Tiffany, good to know its origins Afternoon all I attempted to reply here several times yesterday and kept getting interrupted! El I'm pleased about your virgin broadband service, I've heard good things about it and generally approve of them as a company, we did a virgin hot air balloon ride once, it was great Yogi I hope your tooth still feels ok, it sounds like they may want to crown it now Hope you're all keeping dry, I should be around more the next few days because we're having a lazy weekend at home

When I went shopping in Cheltenham this morning I noticed that the bunting which was in Regents Arcade had the Union Jack printed so that it was correct on one side but upside down on the other side. I also saw that some of the shops had put the bunting upside down as well. The Tower of London is going to be overflowing

I had a rather unusual request this afternoon from the wife of one of my clients. She needs her passport photo to be guarantored and as one of the catagories who can do this are public notaries was wondering if I was one so would be able to do this. She had left this question on my answerphone and I was a bit puzzled. I'm allowed to certify UK passport photos as accountants are one of the groups of people who can do this. I knew she was either from the States or Canade so I guessed from the terminology she used that it was the passport for one of those countries rather than the UK. I rang her and it turned out that it was for Canada. I explained to her that public notaries are solicitors so I couldn't do it. I told her that there was a public notary in Gloucester, but there is only the one. Luckily for her, doctors are also allowed to act as guarantors so she will ask her doctor to do the deed.

Good afternoon everyone. Weather is cloudy, with occasional sunny spells.

El, I had no idea that the name Tiffany was linked to the Feast of Epiphany.

Kyle is a Scottish name, as in Kyle of Lochalsh, and has been popular for a long time, up here. I would never have named any child after a wine - can you imagine, Asti Spumante or Liebfraumilch?

Thanks for asking everyone, I'm glad to say the tooth isn't giving me any pain but I am being cautious and chewing on the opposite side. I'm using the mouthwash as you suggested, El.

There do seem to be rather a lot of people who have hung their Union Jack flags upside down - GJ even started a thread about it.

I hope the lady gets her passported sorted out. I know some doctors charge a fee for signing passports.

Yogi19

Yogi, I knew GJ had started a thread but if I mentioned the tower of London there, I think that some would start suggesting suitbale candidates to be sent there

It's quite normal for doctors, solicitors, and other people to charge for certifying passports. Nowadays it's quite possible for the Passport Office to get in touch with the person who has certified the photo to get them to confirm that they are who they say they are, and also for the Passport Office to contact which ever organisation the person who certifed belongs to (in my case the Institute of Chartered Accountants) to confirm that they were a member. Anyone who certifies a photo improperly would be in trouble and I think could even land up by serving time in prison.

I'm glad the tooth is not causing problems Yogi.  And as for the Union Jack it's just lovely that so many people want to join in with the celebrations, history in the making, so it's OK with me whichever way they fly it.

It's interesting about people's names, we are so used to seeing pensioners with names like Arthur, Sidney, Mabel, Edith and not many people in recent years have been christened with those sort of names but the wheel turns and I have certainly heard of some Mabels and Ediths and Arthurs turning up again.  I get the feeling that Chardonnay will soon fall away from popularity though.

To fit in with the Jubilee celebrations, they will end late on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning when the planet Venus crosses the Sun in such a way that it will be between us and the Sun. Although it won't be visible in the UK because it will be night time, it will be visible elsewhere. The last time it happened was back in 2004:

But this won't happen again until 2117.

Hi all,
Had a nice day with my daughter, doing girly things x

My son had no bother having his passport signed, up here GP,s dont do it anymore, too much time consuming. His friend,s mum signed his, she works in insurance, as long as the person signing can be contacted and has no history of convictions, and is a British Citizen, its fine.
I do love old fashioned names, but like some of the new names too. One of my friends daughter is pregnant, with a girl, but cant see her calling her new baby Mabel or Edith!
Her grown up kids are Victoria and Jonathan, so i think maybe the grandchild will be named in the same vein,  Beatrice  has been mentioned, not liking it myself, but then its not up to me !

Glad the tooth is ok Yogi.

Hope you have all had a nice day x

Good afternoon It's overcast but dry here, we took bramble to my favourite woodland walk this morning. It was her first trip there and she loved it she doesn't tire, I think she'll have no problem hiking mountains next year. We limit her distance for her health's sake, but I just know she would keep on going & going! Anyone watching "smash" on sky Atlantic? I thought I was going to dislike it but I'm enjoying it
~Sparkling Summer~

Summer, not having Sky, just Freeview, means I don't get to see Smash. I've just been looking at the IMDB page for Smash and it does sound good. A tv series about the behind the scenes work in putting on a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe sounds interesting. Does the series use the musical numbers which Marilyn sung in her films or does it have songs written for the series?

I missed the previous week's episode but yesterday on BBC2 they had the second (there's only the 2 episodes) of Arts Troubleshooter. A troubleshooter goes in to the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmonds to see if he can come up with ways to make the theatre more financial stable. It was worth watching. Smash reminded me about this as one of the plays they put on was an original musical based on Dick Turpin. The art director at the theatre used to be in The Bill years ago.

El Loro
El I've been to bury st. Edmunds many times, I grew up not far from there. What kind of improvements have been made to the theatre? Smash has a lot of original songs in, 2 of the main characters are the song writers for the musical. There have been a few marilyn songs so far, I think more will appear in due course I'm loving the queens hat today
~Sparkling Summer~

Summer, The Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds has been able to get some more funding through a grant so its immediate future looks secure. Colin Blumeneau has been taking too much of the responsibilites for not only being the artistic director, but also writing and producing some of the home grown plays. He will be relinquishing some of the responsibilities. The main criticism of the theatre has been the seating which was put in a couple of years ago. The intention might have been good in terms of appearance, but it's been a bit of a disaster as not only are the seats a bit cumbersome, but they are not comfortable and as a result some of the regulars had stopped going. They will need to change the seating but that's not scheduled to take place before next year.

Thanks el, oh yes, there's a theatre in Newcastle that has the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in, so bury st Edmunds will be wise to change there's. It's not a massive town so losing regulars at the theatre would not be good at all. I really hope they turn it around and do well, it's a lovely town Evening yogi hope you have your feet up. How's your iPad?
