Good morning everyone

Today's forecast is for sogginess almost everywhere, so careful with the cream crackers today.

Yogi, congratulations on the Spicy Apple Cake. Ckeck your posting again, there's a mistake there.

Summer, that's a shame about not seeing the Northen Lights after all the build up on the news yesterday.

^^^^What have I done?

Good morning I'm watching snow fall It started as rain, turned to sleet and is now just snow. It's melting as it lands, but I'm still stuck to the window like a kid at Christmas El, the northern lights have been reported as being seen all over this area and as far down as Yorkshire during the night, they must have appeared after we went to bed. If we hadn't have had to get up for work this morning, I'm sure we'd have stayed out most of the night

Good morning everyone, Yogi I am so pleased that the Spicy Apple Cake turned out so well, my daughter loves it, I haven't made it for ages so perhaps I will try it again.

Such a shame about the Northern Lights Summer I wish you and Mr. Summer had seen them.

After the bits about the your posting Yogi I scanned your post and could see nowt wrong only to find you had found the error and corrected it my eyes were like this trying to see what was wrong.

Have a good day everyone even if its soggy (which it certainly is here) and I hope all the snow just melts away.

EDIT  Meant to say, I am loving Call The Midwife, hooray for a second series and I even found Miranda Hart quite touching in the part she played.

The Oscar nominations for 2012 have been announced.

Hugo, the 3D film from Martin Scorcese has the most nominations 11 closely followed by The Artist with 10. Other notable likely forerunners are The Descendants with 5 and The War Horse with 6, though as Spielburg is not up for the best director award I doubt if War Horse will win the best picture. Generally the same film gets both awards.

No mention of an Oscar nomination for Uggie though which will disappoint many. It is interesting that Berenice Bejo has been nominated for best supporting actress in The Artist rather than best actress. The BBC commentators on the nominations think that this is because Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) is a certainty for best actress so that Berenice Bejo has a better chance of getting best supporting actress.

Thanks for that El, i read about Uggie and a few ego,s were a bit put out of joint!

I havent seen The Iron Lady, and a lot havent, apparently here, but believe Meryl Streep gave a marvellous performance as Maggie.
Pity Speilberg isnt up with War Horse, but there could be many reasons for that....................x

I'll be surprised if Meryl doesn't get the Oscar for Best Actress.

I'm gutted that Uggie isn't nominated for an award though, he's a wee star.

I was watching it live on the BBC News channel to see which films were nominated. Although I was expecting The Artist to be nominated for Best Picture it was far from certain as The Artist is technically a French film. If it hadn't been nominated for Best Picture than it might have been up for Best Film in a Foreign Language, but I didn't think they would do that as it is silent so the language is irrelevant. If they had missed it out altogether there would have been outrage.

I do wish the BBC would get their facts right. They keep on saying that Wings (1927) is the only silent film to get an Oscar for Best Picture and fail to mention that Sunrise (the Murnau film) won the Oscar for Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production award in the same year. That award was only given once. Subject to The Artist, I consider Sunrise to be the best silent film ever made and proves that great films can be made without speech. The IMDB top 250 isn't too reliable a guide to the best films as it is driven by popular vote rather than by critical acclaim. In the current list, Sunrise is at position 158 compared to The Artist at 162. Strange that quite possibly the 2 best silent films are so close together out of all the films ever made.

In case you are interested IMDB has The Shawshank Redemption as the best film ever made closely followed by The Godfather. Of the classics, 12 Angry Men comes in at 6, Casablanca at 19, Rear Window at 22. I have a copy of Halliwell's top 1000 films which is a better guide as that is from a film critic. His top film is a Japanese film from 1953 called Tokyo Story.. On IMDB that justs gets into the top 250 at 233. I've never seen Tokyo Story and doubt if I ever will. The storyline shows why I'm not in a rush to see it no matter how good it is:

"An elderly couple journey to Tokyo to visit their children and are confronted by indifference, ingratitude and selfishness. When the parents are packed off to a resort by their impatient children, the film deepens into an unbearably moving meditation on mortality " Cheerfull ain't it

I'm not too keen on fog, I find it a bit spooky, especially at night.

I'm glad I'm not going out in the middle of the night tonight as it's forecast to be foggy here as well. Currently, it's just cloudy.

That's why I end up missing episodes yogi, I love my bed and love to be in it by 9.30 ish It was a foggy drive home tonight, it's a real shame too because the northern lights alert is reporting very high activity tonight. We'll not see it through this fog El, very interesting about the movies. I think shawshank is a very deserving no. 1 film It always makes me cry I haven't seen the godfather films though, I really should watch them!

Good morning everyone

I don't know whether or not there was fog here overnight, none here now, just 100% cloud cover. No chance of having seen the northern lights not that they ever become visible in this part of the country.

Although I thought Shawshank was a good film, it's not one which I would think of as being the best ever film. Having said that, I can't say what film I would choose as my candidate for best ever film. If I was forced to, I could suggest It's a Wonderful Life as possibly more than any other film made, its positive message must have made possible suicidal people change their minds.

Good morning I was awake until 2.30am last night, and it was still very foggy then so definitely no sightings of the northern lights here. El, I did read that some people on the north Norfolk coast have been known to see them, that's pretty low for a sighting I think it's a wonderful life would definitely be in my top few of greatest films of all time. I have favourites of course, but to think of films to class as the greatest.. That's a tough decision! It's sunny here now I've got to pop out and run some errands, then pick up my MIL and colour her hair. I'll not be about much today but will pop in after tea, I hope you all have a lovely day
