Good morning everyone, like EL its much cooler here today, but as we have had so few frosts (if any) so far we are not doing bad for January.  On our local news yesterday they were showing plants that were already blooming as if its Spring.  I do hope we don't then get a hard frost spell or they will all have their buds blighted (and there's nothing worse )

Skylark for my twopennorth I think you are very restrained with your granddaughter's other grandma she sounds like a bit of a horror.

Thanks for the vid EL, I will watch it later.  Have a good day everyone.

Joyron I am reading Here Come The Girls and thoroughly enjoying it, I feel as if I am on a cruise myself

Good morning everyone. The weather is a lot better today - no wind and rain.

Happy Birthday to your son, Joyron. It's also my youngest son's birthday today.

Lovely rendition of We Three Kings, El.

Squiggle, I've noticed the tulip and daffodil bulbs seem further on than usual, for this time of year. I guess the milder temperatures have something to do with it.

Although I don't watch CBB I notice that Michael Madsen is one of those taking part. His sister Virginia is also an actress. Although I've seen very few of her films, I thought that if she had been in films in the 1940s & 50s she would have become a famous star. One of her films was Candyman which was a very gruesome horror film, but it had some exceptionally high quality music composed by Phillip Glass who is a serious American composer.

This is a clip of some of the music - it's music only and shows nothing from the film.

Hello again.    Well the trip to the shops and to visit No.1 son went okay.  The weather is really quite nice out there today.

I bought myself a bunch of daffodils from the supermarket.  I know they're forced but it's nice to have a sign of spring to look at.  Spring is my favourite season and it's arrival will make me feel really good, and SO happy!!

Yogi, I remember now that your son's birthday is the same day as my son's.  Squiggle, I'm glad you are enjoying "Here Come the Girls".  I've not had the chance to pick up a book in the last couple of weeks but I plan on rectifying that as soon as possible.

Will try and get back later.

I noticed on the Gloucester Catherdral website a couple of days ago that there was going to be an exhibition there later this month about Edward Wilson. He lived in Cheltenham and there is a statue of him there. He was a doctor and was one of those who perished with Scott of the Antartic on that ill fated expedition. They died on 29 March 1912 so the centenary will be this March.

And then there was a news item today about an auction of Titanic memorabilia. Prawn Cracker has a thread about that.

The Titanic sunk on 15 April 1912, just over 2 weeks after Scott and the others perished.

It is sad and strange that two of the most famous British tragedies should happen so close together.

Although the news is bound to refer to the Titanic several times, and I think ITV are having a drama soon about this, I suspect less will be mentioned about Scott.

The music for Scott of the Antartic was composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. He adapted the music for his 7th symphony called Sinfonia Antartica. This clip is part of that symphony.

Evening everyone.

Youngest son has had a nice birthday and is spending the evening with his girlfriend.

Joyron, I hope your son has had a lovely birthday, too.

Thank you for the music clips, El. I was telling my parents today that you post music clips for us and have introduced me to pieces I would otherwise never have heard.

Summer, I am not waiting 46 sleeps for a pancake, I'm thinking of having some tomorrow.

Skylark, I hope the wee one enjoyed the panto.

Good morning everyone

Sunny, cool and a slight breeze today here.

Summer, although the Scott and Titanic tragedies occurred close together, news of Scott wasn't known for several months - the bodies weren't discovered until November.

I think there's a football match this afternoon:

I hope Cheltenham have a nice day.

El Loro

Good morning everyone, quite a nice brightish morning for a change

Hope Cheltenham do well this afternoon EL, and I hope your granddaughter enjoys the panto without being frightened Skylark.  I love all those girly things they do for the little girls nowadays, my daughter was a tomboy and didn't like all those girly things and she still hates pink

Scott's expedition and Shackleton's adventures are two thrilling stories.  I still get mad about Amundsen though who decided, after Scott had set off, to race him to the Pole. With Scott in those days without the communication we have nowadays unaware that he was in a race so that after all their struggles they found they had been beaten to it when they got there.  The most moving stories of bravery on that journey though, Oates when he knew he was dying and would be a burden on them, leaving the tent in a blizzard saying "I am just going outside and I may be some time" And also so many scientific discoveries came from the work of the expedition, heroes to a man I would say.

Summer, from Wiki. Due to it being the South Pole, temperatures would be at their lowest during our Summer months which is why I think the search party didn't attempt to search earlier.

The remaining expedition members (other than Campbell's Northern Party who were still away) waited at Cape Evans through the winter, continuing their scientific work. In the spring Atkinson had to consider whether efforts should first be directed to the rescue of Campbell's party, or to establishing if possible the fate of the polar party. A meeting of the whole group decided that they should first search for signs of Scott. The search party set out on 29 October, accompanied by a team of mules that had been landed from the Terra Nova during its resupply visit the previous summer. On 12 November the party found the tent containing the frozen bodies of Scott, Wilson and Bowers, 11 miles (18 km) south of One Ton Depot. Atkinson read the relevant portions of Scott's diaries, and the nature of the disaster was revealed. After diaries, personal effects and records had been collected, the tent was collapsed over the bodies and a cairn of snow erected, topped by a cross fashioned from Gran's skis. The party searched further south for Oates's body, but found only his sleeping bag. On 15 November, they raised a cairn near to where they believed he had died.

On returning to Hut Point on 25 November the search party found that Campbell's Northern Party had rescued itself and had returned safely to base.

Mark Gatiss  made a drama documentary related to the Scott expedition a few years ago which was shown on BBC4.The Worst Journey in the World is Apsley Cherry-Garrard's (played by Mark Gatiss) account of his own part in the expedition. The book from which this is taken was written and published 10 years after the expedition and is recognised as one of the classic accounts of expeditions.

Someone has uploaded it on to Youtube, so if you want to, you can watch it. It's in 6 parts and this link will take you to the playlist which has the 6 parts in order.
