Hi soozy hope you have many hours of great fun with your kindle! I considered downloading mrs miracle onto my iPhone, but seeing as I love to read in the bath, I think it's best not to I've just picked up my first pair of glasses, and tried them out while driving home, it felt like my eyes had had a jolly good wash I'll only need them for driving, so I didn't go for an expensive designer pair, but I'm very happy with them

That made me smile.

Glad I'm not the only one who reads in the bath.

Some women buy lots of shoes, some buy lots of handbags - and we buy lots of books!

True true, and its ages since I bought any new ones, that's my excuse   As I have said before I do love a good Christmas book, and Christmas movies.

Nice to see you in here Soozy

At least your boiler has been given the all clear for the winter.

I've just had a client ring me re doing his accounts and tax. He told me that another client who we both know is seriously ill. It sounds as if his immune system is impaired. He is being tested for all sorts of things but they haven't yet worked out what is behind this. They have ruled out leukaemia. I know just over a year ago he had a dreadful nose bleed, they tested his blood pressure which was extremely high and he was lucky to have survived that.

I was just thinking the same.  I always think its worse with Christmas on the horizon, that may sound silly.

Night Skylark, those whirling cogs are annoying.  Going to sign out too now myself, hoping to finish my book tonight, I have a good one to start tomorrow, night night all

I know what you mean, Squiggle.

Enjoy your book and will catch up tomorrow.

Goodnight Skylark. Sorry, I didn't realise you were going, I thought you were still around.

Good morning everyone

Thanks for your thoughts on my ill client. From what I've been told he has been in and out of hospital. He's there at present having been transferred from intensive care to recovery and they are intending to discharge him, but I don't know if he will go back home, or go to a nursing home.

It's rained here quite a lot over the last day, and it looks as if it will start again soon, though it's supposed to clear up later and the forecast is for a clear night with some frost first thing tomorrow.

Good morning It's rained all night here, and doesn't look particularly good right now Squiggle that's one cute, happy looking bookworm Yogi, yes breaking dawn is the final twilight book, which has been divided into 2 films. This being part 1, I have to wait a whole year for the final part The books are fantastic, and although some little things are changed for the screen adaptations, they are great films for any twilight fan

Would it be bad of me to say I hope the shooters miss?

Give Stream a cuddle from me.

That's why I said I hope the shooters miss.

I have a zero tolerance for all forms of hunting as a sport, only acceptable for the purposes of obtaining food and then only when it is needed rather than as a by-product of sport.

Some weeks ago I posted a trailer for the film "The Artist", the one which is silent apart from music, and is in black and white. I had no idea then if or whne it would open in the UK, but I have found that it is due to open on 30 December, but I don't know if on limited or general release.(rated PG).

It has received rave reviews in the States and in other countries. It is set in the transition period from silent films to talkies and is about the effect on one silent film actor as he sees his career going down, and a young starlet whose career is on the up as she goes into talkies. I don't know anything about the story but it sounds rather like A Star is Born but set in Singin' in the Rain era.

It is being very strongly tipped for Oscar as best picture. If it does get it, that would be the first time since Wings (1927) that a silent film has won best picture (in 1929). At least that's what is being said on the BBC website. Strictly they are wrong as in the same year (1929), they had another category of Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production. 1929 was the only year this category was ever included. It was won by Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. I have mentioned Sunrise before on this forum but I'm not sure if I have in this thread. I have seen Sunrise, and have no reservation is saying that if a film ever deserved to win such a reward that it was Sunrise. I reckon that it is the best silent film ever made, and demonstrates that a film can be made without spoken dialogue, and is so involving that you don't notice.

I remember you posting the trailer for this film, El. I think a lot of people will be a little surprised if a black and white, silent movie wins an Oscar for Best Picture in 2012.

I agree that we don't always need the spoken word to tell a story. There are no words spoken in ballet and yet it also manages to tell a story.

One of the reasons why it may get Best Picture Oscar is that it's a feel good film, and because it is about yesteryear in Hollywood it has particular appeal for the people who vote for the Oscars. The people who vote are the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and many of them are part of the Hollywood establishment. Also the members tend to be the most conservative of people so like films which are free of contentious matters.

Summer, you haven't offended me. Hopefully, they'll all be rubbish shots and miss the birds.

I wasn't offended by you posting about the beating, I just don't like the idea of hunting for entertainment. When I was a teenager I went into the countryside with a couple of friends from school. One of them had an air pistol, and at one stage they started shooting at dragonflies. They passed me the pistol and were amused that I was so bad that I couldn't hit a dragonfly. They didn't know that I was deliberately missing them.
