That's what middle son does.

I miss him as my Chief Spider Catcher, now he has left home.

I can catch daddy longlegs and release them.

I'm not keen on wasps because I have had mild allergic reactions to their stings, otherwise I don't mind other insects.

I have been on the Inland Revenue site for the past hour , looking to see if Medical Retirement money is taxable, all i can say is . Still no further forward, giving it up for now before i get a migraine .
Glad we all survived the satellite debris

Skylark, by Medical Retirement money, I assume you mean a pension from the NHS. The standard rules for firms pensions are that you can take out a tax free lump sum at the start of the pension. The ongoing monthly pension is taxable. For typical firms pensions the tax free lump sum can be up to 25%, but that may well be different for the NHS.

State pensions are taxable.

State incapacity benefits are taxable after the first 28 weeks.

Thanks very much El x  Just about getting things sorted. I am receiving a payment next week and it is being taxed and wanted to check if that was correct. I may pop in to the local tax office on Monday and make some enquiries

Off the top of  my head the best Christmas ones are (although they were made in the 40,s )
Miracle on 34th street
Its a Wonderful Life
Scrooge (of course!) The original was 1946 or thereabouts .
I love the old black and whites , Bette Davis in particular. "Now Voyager" was very good .
Cant think at the minute more up to date ones

good morning all Pardon me for not saying goodnight, I fell asleep on the sofa I've just created a list that I can add films too anytime, my latest rental is called "new in town" I have no idea what it's like but I chose it because I'm a renee zellweger fan I hope you're all enjoyed the weekend, here's wishing everyone a great Sunday
~Sparkling Summer~

Good morning everyone

It's been raining here this morning and more showers expected today.

Summer, Mrs Doubtfire is on Channel 5 this afternoon starting at 5.05.

That's preceded by The Princess Bride which is a fairytale told by a grandfather to his grandson. Definitely a family film with romance and comedy and a one-off, there's no other film like it. I must admit that I didm't take to it, but there are many who love this film and would rate it up there with The Wizard of Oz.

Reach for the Sky is on Film 4 on Monday as 12.35 pm in the afternoon - that's the Douglas Bader biography with Kenneth More - that got a mention on this forum a few days ago.

Shane is on Channel 4 on Tuesday at 12.55 pm - a western classic with Alan Ladd, and is highly regarded - easily his best film, and would be of appeal to many who would not normally watch westerns because of the fine acting and the relationship built between Shane and the woman and boy he meets.

Yogi, I hope your son has been reconnected by now

The weather worsened while I was at church, and rather than showers, it's persistent rain, grey, and the hills around have vanished. It's now forecast to be like that for a few hours. It's just as well that I don't have to go anywhere this afternoon. This weather seems to be localised in this area.

There was a little surprise for our curate today at church. She has just returned from a holiday in Crete and the vicar presented her with a bouquet of flowers and a signed card to celebrate her 25th wedding anniversary. It came as a real surprise as they were married in March some 25 years ago. The vicar had known they had gone on a special holiday to celebrate their 25th but hadn't realised that the holiday did not coincide - she obviously didn't let on but those in the know were a bit amused

Yogi, your son will be happy when he gets home

That's strange, the rain here stopped at around the same time as yours started. There was about 5 hours rain from when I went to church until around half an hour ago and it had been raining hard in the early hours of the morning looking at the roads when I went to church. It's brightening up here now so I'm hoping the worst is over

I hate it when that happens Yogi, its nice to have a nice shiny box but all your stored programmes have to go, I keep trying to clear it but I only have 25% free at the moment.  Mind you it might be different on Virgin but on Sky that's what happens and there's no way you can save them.  Its quite a nice afternoon here now sorry you have got the rain.  I think they have promised a bit of an Indian Summer this week

For Summer

Virgin is the same, Squiggle - when you get a new box, you lose your stored programmes. Son didn't have any saved though, so he's fine.

I see on the BBC website that Alex Kingston is joining Upstairs Downstairs as the younger sister of Lady Holland who has been played by Eileen Atkins who is leaving.

That will be quite a change of role for Alex Kingston, but she has had quite an extraordinary series of roles over the years. Recently she has been River Song in Doctor Who. She came to public attention back in 1996 when she played Moll Flanders and then moved to the States and became a regular on ER. She has appeared in lots of things. I don't watch it but she appeared in Law and Order - Special Victims Unit in a few episodes where she played a character called Miranda Pond. That is an extraordinary coincidence as River Song's real name is Melody Pond.

Shame that Eileen Atkins is leaving though.

Did you know that Eileen Atkins and Jean Marsh, who played Rose in the TV series, wrote the original idea for Upstairs Downstairs?

I did, but I don't know that the others here do.

I did and I think the reason that she is leaving is because Upstairs Downstairs last series wasn't a patch on the original

I agree with that, Squiggle.
