Talking of place names, Gloucester is one of the oldest places in the country. The official founding was in 97 AD as a Roman settlement. It was called Glevum for short. It is likely that there was an Anglo-Saxon settlement already there but no archaelogical proof. In Old Welsh, it was called Caerloyw, caer = castle, and loyw from gloyw = glowing/bright, but in Saxon times it was called Glowancestre from the Anglo-Saxon for fort (Old English ceaster) preceded by the Roman stem Glev- (pronounced glaiw). The literal meaning of Gloucester is now taken as "Fair City".

I just looked up the California club, it sounds like an enjoyable read it looks like the author has written several other titles too I miss my latest book, luckily I have the next in the series to start but isn't it funny how you can get so into a story that you miss it after it's finished! Yogi yes I'm at work today, so far it's been ticking along just pleasantly, although it seems to be the day for hair full of gel, which I dislike

Hi all, back from the shopping. grabbing a bite to eat before eldest son arrives - he's in the mood for a mooch around the shops, so we will be going out for an hour or two.

El, that is some amount of data, I don't envy you the task of sorting through that lot.

Sqiggle, I hadn't heard of Belinda Jones, but I'll check out her books.

Summer, my sons all use hair products, but always wash it out before going to get their hair cut.

Will be back later.

Son and I bought some exciting items - a bulb for my outside light, a mop head and a sponge for washing the car - he's washing his car, atm.

Yogi, after that exciting shopping, I think you need a cup of tea to recover.

I thought I would weigh how heavy those boxes are- in total a bit over 8 and a half stone, that's quite a lot of paper for me to go through. Although I won't be working on it the whole time as I have other clients work to do, I expect this job to carry on until mid-November.

That's a mountain of paperwork, I wish you luck with that lot, El.

It will certainly keep you busy.

BTW, I settled for the cup of tea.

Yogi, I thought you might

I'll be watching Watchdog tonight with some interest. There's due to be a report on claim management companies and payment protection insurance claims - the report is looking at whether bank customers are in danger of being fleeced a second time. You will remember that I had a lot of phone calls from these companies, easily the most persistent of them being Tucan Claims. I wonder if they will be mentioned and, if so, what the report will say.

As I've posted before, many people would be able to deal with the banks direct thus saving any fees paid to the claim management companies.

Squigge, it's a year. The papers I've got include all the purchase invoices from suppliers, and it's roughly one lever archfile's worth each month. There's lots of computer generated reports, bank statements, chequebooks, petty cash vouchers, monthly suppliers statements, and the payroll records including the weekly timesheets. Quite a lot of the stuff I won't need to refer to such as the timesheets, and I only look at the last month's suppliers statements as earlier months shouldn't be relevant. The boxes don't include any of the sale records as I need to deal with that at the client's premises. Accomodation at the client's premises is a bit limited which is why I do the work at home. I'm only about 15 minues away so if they need something which I've got, it's not far away. There's 3 people involved with the bookkeeping side of things there, so you can see that it's quite big.

This is the client I used to do for my colleague who died last October. His practice was bought by another local practice and they are happy for me to continue to do the bulk of the work. Although I could take on the client as my own, I feel that it is large enough not to be wholly reliant on just myself. As I've been doing this job for years, the client very definitely want me to carry on as I know them and they know me. And their accounting software is rather unusual. I know how to get what I need out of it, whereas many other accountants would have quite a job getting to understand its pecularities.

I love that you noticed how fast they were running.

I wonder what's going on? (I'm nosey like that).

Honestly, 2 Policewomen, just standing outside now, slightly out of breathe ! Think the person they are after has long gone! They are now looking in the wheelie bins, we have large communal ones. Its better than the telly !  (hopefully its not anything serious tho)
I am peeking out the window like Miss Marple!

I'd be doing the same.

Crikey I get busy for a few hours and it's all going on by the time I get back! Keep us updated skylark, it sounds intriguing I'm glad your dog got the all clear too El wow that paper work weighs the same as a person! What a huge job you have to get through, I hope it goes smoothly Yogi, I have a rule regarding gel: if my comb can easily get through the hair then I'll cut using a technique that involves not putting my fingers in the hair. It's still sticky, annoying and for most cases I'd have done a higher quality job if I could have put my fingers in it. After numerous bouts of dermatitis over the years, I no longer put my fingers in gel or wax etc The second part of my rule is, if the comb gets stuck in the gel, then I make them have it washed. This usually results in the protest "can't you just wet it down" to which I reply "that won't help, it needs to be shampooed out" they protest more, I refuse, they give me a filthy look, I don't care.. Then after having washed it out & I say thank you very much and give them a fantastic haircut to further prove my point I did 31 haircuts today, and a good stretchy half hour of yoga after, my back popped & cracked beautifully I hope everyone has had a lovely day, yogi's mop & sponge shopping sounds good, I should send my car up to be cleaned

Good morning everyone

I see there's going to be a forum update some time today which hopefully will sort out the iPhone problems. That means that this site will go off air for a time at some point in the day, my guess is some time between 3 and 5 this afternoon.

It's a lot cloudier today than the last couple of days, and rain is forecast over the weekend, but I don't think the forecasters are expecting a repeat of earlier this week.
