Just sent a list of my comments and queries to a client. It's taken rather a long time and is rather complex. I rang him yesterday to warn him about this as it will take him some time and he'll need a clear head.

Client had not done anything wrong, it's just rather complex information for a lay person. It's a bit like some of those math posers I've posted here

Hopefully you will find a new replacement or one of your current players will take over the mantle

There have been some loan players coming in but little sign that there;s anyone who is equal to Alfie May who has scored 4 goals more in League Once so far this season that the total number scored by Cheltenham which is zero.

Another rather pointless Youube maths poser:

Asking why the factorial of 0 (which is written out as 0!) equal to 1.
Factorials of numbers are 1 times 2 times 3 and so until one gets to times that number. So the factorial of 5 (5!) is 1x2x3x4x5 = 120. So zero isn't used in calculating factorials.
But one can work out what 0! would be in theory by working backwards.
5! = 120
So 4! = 120 / 5 =24
3! = 24 / 4 = 6
2! = 6 / 3 = 2
1! = 2 / 2 = 1
If you see the pattern of the above, by continuing the pattern we get:
0! = 1/1 = 1
I haven't bothered to watch the clip but I assume it works the answer out as I have.

I would need a new brain to work that out El

Moonie, the number of games played in a season in a league can be worked out using permutations.
So the Premier League has 20 teams.
Using permutations, the number of games in a season is:
20 times 19 equals 380 divided by 1 times 2 which works out at 190. But that gets doubled as each team played other teams home and away. So 380 games in a season.

Suppose triangular football was to be introduced.
If a league had 10 teams then
10 times 9 times 8 equals 720 divided by 1 times 2 times 3 (equals 6) which works out at 120. If each team plays the fixtures at home and the other two sides in a season then 120 times 3 equals 360 games in a season.

Not as far fetched as that sounds:

Got as phone call this morning from the outfit carrying out surveys for HMRC. I had received a letter about this a few weeks ago and had emailed the outfit to opt out. I had received an email back to accept my request. Someone will get told off for not processing my request. The caller this morning was apologetic.

The survey was about HMRC services and was targetted at both those who have to complete tax returns and also at agents. Fairly obviously I use my tax software to file my tax return rather than use HMRC's own. And I use that software for filing clients returns. My use of HMRC services is minimal and I didn't want to waste my time in answering questions in a survey.

Just had a letter from the same survey outfit as I had a year ago who are intending to ring me in the next 5 weeks to carry out a  survey on HMRC services.
Letter, as last year, claims that people are chosen on a random basis. Either there's a problem with the way selections are chose or there's nothing random about it but targeted.
Sent off an email to them and also to the survey team at HMRC about this.See what they have to say, if anything.

It sounds like their “random” is not very random El

I did get a reply to my email from the same person I contacted last year. Apologised for the phone call I got last year from the outfit some weeks after the person had supposedly removed me from the survey. Said I would be removed from the list of those surveyed

Claimed that those selected were on a random basis.

Facts from last year's survey:
Interviews were carried out with 2,273 Individuals, 2,081 Small Businesses and 1,850 Agents between 1 September and 18 November 2022.

Individuals would be from anyone who had any dealings with HMRC in the previous year so that would include anyone who had rung them or did tax returns (the number of returns is around 12 million,
So 2,273 people would be about 1 in every 5,000 people.

There are about 5.5 million small businesses in the UK.
So 2,081 small businesses would be about  in every 2,600 small businesses.

Then the last category and the most likely for me to have been selected are tax agents. Those aren't just accountants who do tax returns, they include bookkeepers who are involved with doing VAT returns for their clients and also payroll bureaus.
There are around 65,000 tax agents in the UK.
So 1,850 agents selected is about 1 in every 35 agents.

So the chances of me having been selected on a random basis is about 1 in 35.

So not impossible but not likely. (all the info above can be found online so there's no guesswork on my part).

Some years ago I posted about the musical child prodigy Alma Deutscher. She is 18 now and moved to Vienna a few years ago. She is still a pianist, a violinist, a composer and also a conductor.
A clip of a more mature type of music that she composed more recently:

The start of the music is not representative of most of it which is quite pleasant.

Somehow it does actually remind me of Vienna, I don't know why, as I've never been there

She doesn't look more than about 13/14 years old ....obviously very gifted

Thank you El

Slim, little new of interest on the Talking Pictures tv channel this coming week. On Friday at 4.05 in the morning there's a 1948 film noir called "The Velvet Touch". Stars Rosalind Russell, Claire Trevor and Sydney Greenstreet as the investigating officer. Mixed reviews with some thinking it was very good and some rather boring.
