I've mentioned before that the BBFC have been re-rating a number of older films.
Today they've changed the rating for the 1946 Michael Powell film "I Know Where I'm Going" from the U certificate it had ever since 1946 to a PG on the basis of mild threat and sex references

One wonders why the children of today need to be shielded more from this film than the likes of you and me from yesteryear El

It's as if the BBFC have decided that U certificate films should be restricted to those films which are intended for young children. The U does stand for Universal

Yet some childrens films, 'Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs' for instance which has recently been reclassified as a U certificate, appears innocent enough for the young....when actually it is thought that Snow White was only 14yrs old whereas the prince was 31

"Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs" was reclassified from the original A certificate to a U certificate in 1964 so not quite so recent

Slim, a couple of films on the Talking Pictures tv channel during the coming week.
Thursday 6.30 in the morning "Them Thar Hills" (1934) a Laurel and Hardy short that I don;t think I've mentioned to you before.

Friday 18.45 "Beat the Devil" (1953) directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, It's sort of a parody of their "The Maltese Falcon". One of those films where those involved seemed to enjoy making it but it's not one of their better films

On Saturday at 17.10 there's a 1950 film called "At War with the Army" which was the first of the Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis film in which they were a duo. Film would only be of interest to fans of their films. I have no intention of watching it.

I mentioned last week about "I Know Where I'm Going" having been re-rated. Also see today that "Edge of the World" (1937), the first notable Michael Powell film has also been re-rated as a PG. Both as films rather than DVDs and due to be released on 20 October by the BFI,
So I thought it worth trying to find out what was happening.
https://theartsshelf.com/2023/...ell-and-pressburger/
Major BFI festival of many of Michael Powell's and Emeric Pressburger's films.

Highlights mentioned are that "I Know Where I'm Going" has been restored for nation wide cinema release from 20 October
and that to celebrate the 75th anniversary from when it was released, "The Red Shoes" will also go on nationwide cinema release from 8 December.

You may spot in that article that an exhibition will include the famous red shows on loan from the Martin Scorsese Collection. The background to that was that Powell had fallen into obscurity, Martin Scorsese had discovered that and, being a strong fan of his films particularly "The Red Shoes", helped Powell in his latter years and was instrumental in restoring Powell's reputation. Later on in the article, it mentions a new book which has contributions from Thelma Schoonmaker and others. She is the film editor of many of Scorsese's films and her only marriage was with Michael Powell from Moy 1984 until his death in 1990.
