Popping in late to wish you all goodnight We had MIL over for tea followed by a long chat on the phone with my best friend, I'm really missing her because I've not seen her bump and the baby is kicking now! I'll see her in 2 weeks tho As for BB I couldn't keep up with live feeds so I'm not really going to miss that, but I l love twitter (mobile version not the main website).. to any unexpected night owls. Come home soon Ros, we miss you
~Sparkling Summer~

Good morning everyone, yes we do miss you Ros, hope its a good day for everyone.

Dashing off to Barnstaple soon to try and see if we can get some sense out of the Job Centre, I hope so for my grandson's sake.  He has his op in a week's time and they have warned him he will be in severe pain for 3 weeks from where they take bone graft (from his hip).

squiggle

Good morning everyone.

Squiggle and Summer, you are a pair of early birds this morning.

Hope you get things sorted out for your grandson, Squiggle.

Summer, thank you for the lovely breakfast - I love pancakes.

Is this your friend's first baby, and is this the one you'll be godmother to? Exciting times for both of you.

I'm also missing Ros, hope she is back with us soon.

He will be given them EL but he is not that keen to take them, I think I would feel the same too much danger of getting hooked on them things.

We are still being given the run around, he has dropped off all the paperwork (again ) and now he has to phone them to see whether they are prepared to let him have any money.  He has tried once and is now supposed to phone again in a couple of hours.  The thing is they closed down the local Job Centre so we have to go on a 10 mile round trip.  He doesn't have access to a landline only from my phone and all for something the surgeon authorised for him 2 months ago.  He is 19, he can't work at the moment with a broken wrist, his mum can't afford to feed him and he is getting no help at all and he's a good lad not like some of these low-lifes we've seen in the news over the last few days.

Squiggle, if he is unable to work due to his broken wrist (which he obviously is), is he not entitled to some sort of sickness benefit?

I agree with squiggle in that your grandson is being messed about.

Yogi, the benefits system has changed in the last couple of years as I found out whilst I was in hospital. In order to qualify for the employment and support allowance (which has replaced the incapacity allowance) claimants have to undergo work capacity assessments and also probably medical assessments. Basically you now have to prove that you cannot work to get benefits - a large proportion of claimants will not be able to get the full benefit.

Squiggle, I agree with your and grandson's reservations about pain killers and not wanted to get hooked on them. I would tend to take the pain killers when I really needed them rather than as soon as I felt any pain.

^^^^ I would have hoped that the letter from his consultant and GP would have been sufficient.

Anyway, I hope he gets it sorted out quickly.

I would have thought that my grandson's surgeon's letter stating that he is scheduled for an operation on his broken wrist, which has been broken now for approximately 4 years just might be enough to qualify for enough money to feed himself but we are obligingly jumping through a whole series of hoops, because that is how the system works

Has the break been undiagnosed for four years or did they not fix it properly at the time it got broken?

You know what teenage boys are like Yogi, he just thought it would heal in time and put up with the pain.  Then when the pain started to get him down about 2 years ago he went to see the surgeon and was given the talk about all the things that could go wrong, including losing the use of his hand, and he panicked and thought 'blow that for a game of soldiers' and didn't bother.  Its just got to the stage now where he can't stand the pain any longer (and I have bought him a good wrist support which he is supposed to wear at night but I think when the pain eases off he forgets).

I know they are obliged to warn us of the things that could go wrong but sometimes it scares people. Poor lad, he has had a time of it.

Yogi19

They have now let him know that they will be giving him some money next Wednesday ÂĢ30 instead of the ÂĢ200 pounds he is owed.  They say that there was a period in between which is not covered by a GP's note (this is the time when they sat on his claim and did not write or phone to say they needed something extra in support of the claim) and therefore he has to start all over again and go back to the GP, take that into the Job Centre again etc etc.  This time next week he is due in theatre! Words fail me.

Afternoon everyone.    It's dismal here today and I'm waiting for the rain to come!!

Squiggle, I've just read back over all the posts since I last signed in.  Your poor grandson has certainly been given the run around.  I'm sure all this hassle cannot be doing you too much good either!!  I'm glad he's actually going to get something next week, albeit not what he may be entitled to.

Yogi,  I don't hold out much hope of there being any LF for BB.  I have never actually watched an awful lot of it but when it was available you could at least get an "unbiased" opinion on here from folks who did watch it constantly, rather than the potted version put out by the producers in order to make us see things their way.

Probably won't be about much over the weekend, although I will try and pop in when I can.  I hope each and everyone of my lovely buddies has a great weekend, whatever they are up to.

Joyron, I am hoping for the best (Live Feed) but fearing the worst.

I agree with you, I like to make up my own mind about HMs, rather than accept the heavily edited versions.

Yogi19

Squiggle, I didn't have time before lunch to say that when I realised the hassle involved in me trying to make a claim for the benefit I decided not to bother trying as I didn't need the stress, and of course because my mother had passed away and I would receive an inheritance I wasn't reliant on the benefit.

And if you want to read about the results of the new system and the tests that people have to undergo, just read this BBC article posted a few weeks ago. It's not nice reading.

Yogi you can't seem to get around the system at all.  Because of the Freedom of Information Act you can't speak up for anyone.  My grandson said the lady who phoned him with the latest news was ever so nice but its just bureaucracy gone mad nowadays (we really have to start cutting through all this mad red tape which is clogging up the system). Certainly somebody is to blame for not stating earlier that they needed more documentation and if it had happened on a claim of mine I would be certainly asking to speak to someone more senior but my grandson is being very patient and not getting stressed.  Which I am pleased about because he would have been a couple of years ago, so we go with the flow and I tell him to keep calm, we will get it sorted.  But you know and I know that its just not right the callous way he has been treated.

Joyron enjoy your weekend, try to pop in and leave a message if you can.

Thanks all for listening, I was feeling very stressed earlier on because it is very frustrating dealing with this but I am calmer now and we will just do whatever it takes to get this whole thing sorted for him.  The right outcome is that he is left with a properly working wrist, he can get the financial support he needs until he is able to look for work again and that he doesn't let this get him down and keep positive about getting work in the future.

All work down here is seasonal so its not easy but we have our eye on a new attraction opening up where my other grandson is working (thinking of next season when hopefully the wrist will be nicely healed).  Incidentally my other grandson is working 12 hour days as a KP (kitchen porter) he is paid much less than the statutory minimum because he is under 18 (his 18th birthday is next week) AND my eldest grandson's G/F who works in the same place didn't get paid at all for the first month because they said she didn't get her paperwork in on time.  These employers know all the dodges don't they?

Thanks for posting the link EL, I know that my grandson is desperate to get a job.  My hubby worked for 45 years without claiming a penny, until a stroke finally felled him.  He had already soldiered through cancer and Guillane Barre Syndrome and returned to work.  I too worked all my life without claiming a penny.  My grandson who has found work is a really hard worker and all that my eldest grandson wants is a chance to do the same, but you can't do that with a broken wrist.

You are not kidding, it's not right. I feel really angry on his behalf, Squiggle.

I hope you manage to get it sorted quickly.

Once his wrist has healed properly, I hope he is able to find some work.

I know it can be incredibly difficult in an area where the jobs are predominantly seasonal.

Hi everyone xx
My heart goes out to you squiggle and your Grandson . Its awful the way he has been treated. The ones that dont want to work seem to get it all, and the genuine ones practically have to beg. Is there a Citizens Rights office near you ? Maybe they can help him out with his benefits etc. Best wishes to him and i hope things work out for him. xxx
Dont worry about the painkillers, it will only be short term and he will be fine xx

I bought my current computer in October 2005 so it almost 6 years old. When I bought it I deliberately went for one which had 2 gb of memory and a 200 gb hard drive - at that time that would have seem an extravagance, but it has served me well and I have never needed to bother getting an upgrade. Now that would be seen as an entry level machine. If I was buying one now with roughly 4 times those figures to ensure a long life. That could well be out of your price range, but memory and hard drive capacity are important.

Thanks for advice x
My computer is around 6 years old, we dont use it now for games etc, my son used to play Football Manager and other games. he doesnt now, so dont need a better graphics board. I have cleared a lot of stuff. I have been pricing some, forgetting of course that we dont need a monitor, keyboard and mouse so that reduces the price quite a bit. It seems to working ok just now, touch wood xx

Evening Skylark, how are things with you?

Yogi19

Hi Yogi, been waiting to hear if they arrived safely at the holiday park. They have only just phoned, i wasnt well amused. They had their phones switched off, which was becoming more frustrating. My daughter been really worried, as we all have been.
Anyway, Granddaughter a bit overwhelmed by it all, but enjoyed the magic show she saw. They are getting her settled down now. I will be glad when Monday comes and she is home, to be honest

Yogi I LOVE that smiley thank you! I wonder if Elcyclopaedia knows if there's a code I can type to be able to post it myself..? I'd love to catch the bus with a pancake smiley! Squiggle, my goodness, your poor grandson has really been given the run around I hope the surgery sorts his wrist out, and I too would suggest a visit to the citizens advice bureau, they can help straighten all this mess out
~Sparkling Summer~

Her other Gran is an arrogant so and so. Not one of my favourite people, but try to get on for the sake of family harmony. She drinks too much wine too for my liking. She can drink her self stupid, i dont care, but not when she has Granddaughter. So hoping she is on the wagon this weekend, or she will be getting my tongue.
i will calm down in a minute !
Hows you? How are the doors coming along ?
