The so called Nottingham Knockers are back in Cheltenham and so likely to hit Gloucester as well.
Dubious characters going from house to house trying to sell things like dish cloths and tea towels, have stories such as ex-servicemen or just out of prison trying to get back on their feet. Legitimate salesmen have to have a pedlar's certificate signed by the local police, these ones won't.

I remember having an old chap on his bike that used to come knocking, he sharpened knives...

I don't know if he had a licence or not, but he did a good job

I'm sure he did do a good job

Years ago I was visitng somewhere (I think it was Leeds). It was in the city centre and suddenly I saw a man grab the things he was selling at his pitch and do a runner - he had spotted a policeman heading his way.
Somehow I don't think he had a licence

@slimfern I watched a film yesterday evening which you might quite like. "I was a Male War Bride" (1949) a Howard Hawks comedy starring Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan. It's not the best Howard Hawks/Cary Grant film but is still enjoyable. It's not a war film and is about a French officer (Grant!) and a US milirary woman (Sheridan) in post-war Europe. It's semi-based on fact).
It's on Youtube.

I note that the 1947 film "The Bishop's Wife" is getting a cinema release presumably as it's the 75th anniversary of when it was first released. An angel (Cary Grant) comes to Earth to help a bishop (David Niven) and his wife (Loretta Young) to raise monry for a new church.
I saw it years ago, thought it was OK but not what you think of as a Cary Grant comedy.
It was remade in 1996 with Denzel Washington as the angel, Courtney B Vance as the bishop and Whitney Houston as his wife.

I wouldn't put Cary Grant and Denzel Washington in the same league
