I note that the Talking Pictures tv channel is repeating today a film they showed earlier this week, "The Rocking Horse Winner" (1949), A young boy receives a rocking horse for Christmas and soon learns that he is able to pick the winning horse at the races.
Leads are Valerie Hobson and John Mills (both in "Great Expectations") and John Howard Davies as the boy (he was Oliver Twist in the David Lean film). Directed and the screenplay written by Anthony Pelissier who had previously made "The History of Mr Polly" which starred John Mills, a delightful film.
TRHW is described as a drama with a touch of fantasy. Film is quite highly regarded by critics.

I've only seen the film once, many years ago and did not like it. It's dark and disturbing, The fantasy aspect is just that the boy can pick winners of horse races. The film was adapted from a short story by D H Lawrence.

I remember trying to read 'Son's and Lovers' by DH Lawrence, it was a part of our curriculum at school- The mother son relationship...disturbing

Didn't see TRHW the first time round and think I'll give it a miss this time too El

Have we got anything fun and light hearted to look forward to over the Easter Weekend?

The mother son relationship is just as disturbing in THRW Not a fun or light hearted film.

The main channels don't seem to anything of note though BBC 1 is repeating the live action Disney film version of "Beauty and the Beast" and ITV repeating "Matilda" tomorrow and "Shrek" on Monday afternoon. Potential if you haven't seen them before as they qualify as fun and light hearted.
Film 4 has some light hearted films during the day time though nothing new,
Nothing I haven't already mention on the Talking Pictures channel - "Halfway House" tomorrow which in interesting but not in the fun category and "Tales of Beatrix Potter" on Sunday.

'Matilda' is a fun film...watched it with my daughter when she was younger...loved Pam Ferris as Miss Trunchbull
Typical Roald Dahl exaggerated characters

Looked to find 'Tales of Beatrix Potter' in next weeks telly mag, to see if it's a biopic or not...it just says drama.

Saw that Sunday and Monday's viewing are riddled with films of which I should think 95% are repeats

The Talking Pictures tv schedule for "Tales of Beatrix Potter" is for the 1971 ballet film (no dialogue). It's not the Renee Zellweger 2006 biopic "Miss Potter".
Official trailer for the ballet film:

Frederick Ashton was a major ballet dancer and the lead choreographer of The Royal Ballet. He's Mis Tiggy-Winkle in this ballet. The only other well known ballet dancer in this is Wayne Sleep - Squirrel Nutkin,
Not surprisingly a U certificate film.

As you say, virtually all the films are repeats

Fabulous costumes!
I'd definitely go to see that live

Joe Root has stepped down as the captain of the England cricket side. Not surprising after only 1 win in the last 17 matches. A bit of a poisoned chalice for whoever takes over though as there aren't the players who can compete at the top level.

That's a streak of bad luck if ever I saw. It's a shame for him seeing as he holds the record for most Test Match wins.
Best of luck to the man

A knock on the door this morning. There was a police officer asking if I had a key to my neighbour's house which I don't. They had been notified that she had had a fall. She's elderly, very frail and has had falls before. Another officer was talking to a neighbour on the other side of the road. Her husband is a paramedic and keeps an eye out on my neighbour. They don't have keys either though have asked her for one in the past.

So the police had to break in at the back of the house. They got in and shortly afterwards the paramedic neighbour went in. They stayed there for a couple of hours and a locksmith turned up to secure the back. Police went away but the paramedic stayed. Shortly afterwards an ambulance arrived to take her to hospital. Still there after an hour and then I saw a fire-engine arrive. I don't know the circumstances but they had to help get her outside to the ambulance stretcher. The neighbour is slight and, if anything, underweight so far from obese.

They've just left. I could see that the neighbour was awake and able to talk.

What a horrible experience for your neighbour El
Wonder why the Fire Service were called in, I assume it wouldn't be for a lift....what with your neighbour being old and frail...maybe she was stuck and needed their equipment to be freed??
Ultimately it is good that she was awake and talking and probably counting her blessings
She is obviously very lucky to have good neighbours

Before I comment on possible films in the next week on the Talking Pictures tv channel, "King Kong" (1933) is on BBC Four on Thursday evening. Film is shown from time to time. It is the best film of its type ever made and is better than the remakes. It would be many years before another film character was created which had the same effect on audiences and that was ET.
Trivia point, the two pilots seen in the climatic scene are the two directors.

Possible films on the Talking Pictures tv channel:
Tomorrow 6.00 in the morning "Johnny Come Lately" (1943). A drifter arrives in a town and helps an older woman save her paper. A feel good James Cagney film.
Wednesday 10.45 in the morning "The Spider and the Fly" (1949). A clever and dedicated French police official, a cleverer master-thief whom he secretly admires, the woman loved by the official who is in love with the thief, at the outbreak of World War I. Quite interesting British drama.
Thursday 14.30 "Mr Hobbs takes a Vacation" (1962). Mr. Hobbs wants to spend a quiet holiday at the beach, but his wife has invited all their family to stay with them. Not the most original comedy storyline but it stars James Stewart and Maureen O'Hara.

Hello.  I don’t know how to attach earlier posts to mine so please forgive me.
I read your posts that mentioned  John Howard Davies as a child actor in such films as Oliver Twist but he then went on to be a very successful TV  director/producer for the BBC on shows including Blackadder, Fawlty Towers and The Good Life.  His last work was as a producer of the Easter special of The Vicar of Dibley.

What a long and wonderful career he had!

As you say he had a long career in production after being a child actor.
Another child actor was Mark Lester, the Oliver Twist in the musical "Oliver!". He became an osteopath and acupuncurist and is based in Cheltenham (the Carlton Clinic).

I've seen the original 'King Kong' El, didn't bother watching the remakes as I wasn't that keen tbh....didn't sit all the way through ET either
I did however watch all of 'Mr Hobbs takes a vacation' and really enjoyed it...I do like James Stewart, he is a very relatable actor.
Don't think I've seen the other two films you've mentioned, although 'Johnny Come Lately' rings a bell....it could be the song I have in my head though
