Methinks a larger umbrella would be needed in this weather we've been having lately

I noticed in the tv mag today that channel 5 are showing 'The Big Freeze: Winter '63' on Thursday....the date and year I was born
Just thought it a coincidence as you had mentioned it a few days ago

Yes, a coincidence - I didn't know that Channel 5 were showing a documentary on Thursday
Started just before Christmas 1962 with frost, snowed on Boxing Day with more later, average temperature in January was -3C in this county, blizzard in February. 6 March was the first morning of 1963 without any frost.
As we lived in town we didn't get snowed in as in the countryside.

One Winter when I was living in Oxfordshire early 80's, we got snowed in...my husband had to have his Father (who was a foreman of a farm back then) bring us supplies via his tractor ...we had the log burner then so being cold wasn't an issue...
I quite liked it at the time

He makes that cello sound like there's more than one instrument being played...very clever
Both quite melancholy pieces....nice though

Sting's album was a collection of songs based on existing old music such as traditional folk songs and also by past classical composers - the clip I posted was his lyrics with his version of that cello piece by Bach.
If you watch Yo-Yo Ma's clip closely you will see that the angle of the bow changes between the lower notes on the strings on one side of the cello and the higher notes on the strings on the other side. That's one of the basic techniques for playing string instruments such as the cello and the violin. This following clip is a lesson in learning how to play the violin, During it you can see exactly what I mean:

The bridge is gently curved rather than straight so that this bowing technique is possible.

I noticed him moving the bow about as he played but didn't realise it was a common learning technique..
Thanks El
I personally prefer that piece of music without the lyrics....sorry Sting!

Good morning everyone and a very Happy Birthday to Slimfern

Cloudy and a bit rainy here, BBC forecast showing a risk of snow showers later this morning but I doubt that any snow would settle.

I hope everyone has a good day

Thank you El

And a lovely looking cake it is too

Thanks
I thought you might be amused by that quote

I can imagine Hitchcock saying that...he looks like someone who would know their way round a decent cake

I had breakfast brought to me in bed by my daughter and am being taken out for lunch by all 5 of them. Grandaughter is in the throws of baking me a cake with fresh cream and strawberries...I'm not sure it will look as delicious as the one you posted but I'm sure it will taste just as good

He certainly did

Your granddaughter's cake will taste a lot better, the one I posted was 4 years old

Hailstorm here at present

@El Loro posted:

Didn't last long and the hail is quickly melting on the ground.
Years ago I was working in a building in Imperial Square in the centre of Cheltenham. It was May and there was a big hailstorm. We could see that the Imperial Gardens had turned white

That’s good news

We have had heavy hailstorms in the past but not the ‘white over’ variety
