Good morning everyone

Its a cold, breezy but dry start too the day here. The forecast is for cloudy changing to light rain by early evening. A high of 17 degrees

El, I can see me having my heating on before long too

My nephew used to go to the summer and winter solstices every year. I don’t know if he still does though

Have a lovely day everyone

Watched the last part of "Discovering Sci Fi in films" on the Sky Arts channel last week. 3 film critics having a count down of their top 25 sci films from the last 100 years.
As tends to be the case with film documentaries on Sky Arts I found it too superficial for me but would be of greater appeal to casual film watchers.
If you want to see a list of the 25 films included:
https://www.3ddproductions.com...ering-sci-fi-on-film
They are listed in order as shown so their number film is the last on the list. There is a typo in the list as one of the films wrongly starts with "22 ".

Films are generally the original rather then any remake.
For instance Solaris is the Russian original rather than the George Clooney remake.

I have seem most of the films. I don't agree with their choice of the best film.

The oldest film on the list is "Metropolis" (1927). That does deserve its place in the list.
The next oldest film is "Things to Come"  (1936). I'm probably the only one here to have seen that, It's based on H G Wells novel "The Shape of Things to Come" and was the first major British science fiction film. Saw it on television years ago and found it very creaky.

Part of Handel's The Harmonious Blacksmith" played on a harpsichord.

The harpsichord predates the piano. The main difference is that with the harpsichord the strings are plucked but with a piano they are hit with what are called hammers.

At the senior school I went to there was a harpsichord. I seem to remember that it was built for the school by one of the teachers as a project. I doubt if many schools have a harpsichord.

When I was at that school, many years ago, the school celebrated it's 300th year. It's a state school and was founded all those years ago to educate local poor boys.
As part of the celebrations, there was an open day with various exhibitions largely done by the senior boys and the teachers including a science display.

There were also outdoor exhibitions. Easily the most memorable of those was a small but working hovercraft. Not sure if it could have much put on it though it could lift of the ground by a foot. Too dangerous to be attempted now due to health & safety reasons. It was powered, probably by something like a motor bike engine. I accidentally touched it with a hand and quickly moved it away as it was very hot. I wasn't burned.

Another very old musical instrument which you might have hear of is the hurdy-gurdy. Here's a couple of Youtube clips. The first shows it in use. The second one is a detailed discussion about the instrument, its history and how it works. Quite interesting, one of the comments on Youtube is "This is a wordy nerdy hurdy gurdy video"

I see that Lloyds Bank are closing more branches. I've alerted one of my clients who will be affected by this. They won't be happy The main branch is further away but has the same bank sort code. Or they'll change banks - there's a Nat West branch near by but then that could also close as there's also a main branch.
