Tried to sort out the payroll software issue and got nowhere. Payroll company support hasn't bothered to contact me and it doesn't look as if it intends to.

So I've rang the client to tell him that I'm unable to do the payroll. I had already told him about the computer problems. About a year ago I had suggested that he do his own payroll as it would be cheaper for him. It's the only payroll I do and so the fee income I can charge for doing that payroll isn't much more than the cost of the payroll.

He does have a background of providing computer support for the software his company used to supply so he says that he'll do his own payroll. I'm now providing him with the information that I have for the payroll.

I'll keep on doing the company accounts and tax.

It’s a good job it’s your only payroll account and the client is able to do it himself

Yes, payrolls aren't something that I've ever done many for clients so I'm not that sorry for that work to go.

I've always kept my clients informed if there have been problems. I rang my client on the 15th, the day I took the computer in to be sorted out to warn him as to what had happened, that the hard drive had failed. And rang him today as I mentioned. He did suggest that I could forward the software to him for him to install and for me to then access his computer to do the payroll. He said he was familiar with Microsoft SQL Server and knew that problems could arise. I didn't take him up as that would have meant that I would have to access his computer each time I did the payroll. That in itself would be possible. But I would not want to be reliant on that and if I could access his computer, could he access mine at the same time? He uses TeamViewer for remote access to his clients' computers, For obvious reasons I don't want client A being able to access files of all my other clients.

Also he would not be able to get any support from the payroll software company as the product is registered to me, not him.

I don’t think I would like anyone remotely accessing my computer either El...

It's standard in computer support. Customer downloads an app sent by support, opens the app, enters the pin number sent to them by support, support then has access to customer's computer. Customer can see what the support is doing on their computer. Once the support is done, the connection between customer and support should be severed so support can't continue to look at the customer's computer. So it should be OK but things can go wrong.

Good evening everyone

It has been dry, bright and chilly today.

I was busy with housework in the morning then lazy in the afternoon.
El, I hope you can get a satisfactory solution to the payroll problem

Moonie, I went further than the kitchen - I went out to the garage.

Hope you all had a good day

Hi Yogi

That sounds like a good day to me πŸ˜‰πŸ˜

That’s almost an expedition πŸ˜‚

Moonie

Good morning everyone

Settled weather here, a bit breezy but nowhere near as windy as for Squiggle. I hope that doesn't cause damage
Forecast to be quite warm for February tomorrow but just the one day.

Yogi, I sent the payroll information my client needs for him to be able to do his own payroll once he's got software. HMRC do provide a free basic PAYE system. A year ago I mentioned to the client a cloud based option which was relatively cheap compared to what I had to pay and has the advantage of a monthly payment and a contract which could be cancelled at short notice. There's 2 months left of this tax year (February and March) so he would be paying for just 2 months for this tax year whereas for other packages he could get charged for a whole tax year.

I hope everyone has a good day

Moonie, it's clouded over here now though that was forecast.

Noticeably breezy. My neighbour is having some work done on his roof. The workman is up there at present. Used a ladder to get up there, no scaffolding. He's by himself. Gusts up to 30 mph.

I’m not sure that’s good health and safety being on his own is such gusty conditions El.

That's what I thought.

I saw today that one of the fence panels in my back garden (an older one, not one of those which were replaced a year ago) is showing wear and tear. It's got worse since yesterday. That's due to the gusts of wind. So if they are strong enough to do that at ground level, it must be a lot riskier at roof level. The workman has gone but I don't know if it's due to the wind or if he's finished his work.

Evening all

It has rained all day and been very windy too.

El, that workman must be nuts to go up on a roof when it’s windy.

I hope everyone has had a good day and managed to stay cosy

Hi Yogi

We had some sunshine, only a little rain but 39mph winds

I only went as far as the garden

Baby Cyril was rampaging round the garden again today

Did your blackbirds come to see you today Yogi?

University of Liverpool is to offer a master's degree course on The Beatles:

My father's musical interest was only classical, his favourite composers were Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner.
He had no time for non-classical music. The only group he considered to have any merit at all were The Beatles.  Though when he saw Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio on television (his first venture into classical music), he was not impressed
