El, I hope your computer behaves itself now

Thanks but I suspect the problem hasn't gone away.

Good morning everyone

Misty but mild here. A lot of rain expected this afternoon

El, from Sunday until at least Wednesday we are expected anything from -1 to -7 overnight temperatures here

Time to get out the thermals methinks

Have a lovely day everyone

Cold here too but lows of -3 rather than -7.

Not to bad re your weather

Discovered that the Steam folder (for some games) had been corrupted since yesterday. So I had to set up a new directory amd reinstall some of the games I have. Games I have bought from Steam remain in my Steam library on their site including ones I''ve previously uninstalled. So games can be re re-installed without having to buy them again.

Forecast locally is to start getting colder on Saturday, then Sunday to Friday really cold, and then it may start getting warmer into the Saturday.  I haven't looked at any newspapers but wouldn't be surprised if some of them are referring to "the beast from the East" again.

I hope the re-installation goes well

More like β€œthe beast from the north east” this time El

Good morning everyone

Some sunshine here at present, forecast to cloud over and for more rain.

Switched on my computrer this morning to find that there were some unreadable sectors on the main D drive (C is a SSD smaller drive used to speed up the starting up process). The chkdsk utility ran automatically to recover what data it could and relocate it - the unreadable sectors would have been flagged as such so that no data can be put there.

So if I go missing from the forum for a protracted period of time, you'll know what's happened.

I hope everyone has a good day

El Loro

Thanks Summer

I think it's quite possible that the hard drive is wearing out so would have to be replaced. I think my computer people would be able to do that - it would a question as to availability of a replacement and when could they do it - next week's weather is such that it could be a non-starter to try to get this done next week.

I'm glad your home made exercise DVD is working a treat

Overcast here but still dry currently

Rain forecast for this afternoon. I see the amber weather warnings for this area have gone

Its still going to be below zero overnight Sunday to Wednesday

Have a nice day everyone. Stay warm and safe

I'm glad your amber warning has gone There were yellow warnings in my area over the next few days but those have gone as well - for the time being. Still going to be very cold here though.

I've mentioned before that I often get phone calls from "British Gas" about my business electicity contract (which is non-existent) being due for renewal.

Very rarely I get a call from "British Gas" about technical probems with the meters.

A short time ago I got someone from "British Gas" ringing me. Her voice was very faint. She wanted to speak to the accounts manager about the electricity bills. So that told me this was about the non-existent business electricity contract. She then went on to say that there were technical problems.

This is the first time the above two types of call have been combined. Although some of the business electricity contract calls may have been from unregulated energy consultants, this call can only have been from a criminal scammer

I think my hard drive is playing up again.

I'm going to swirch off my computer, wait a short time then switch it back on. If I'm able to, I'll post here. If it's not working then you'll know what's happened.

Hmm, sounds like a new hard drive, with all the problems that entails, is required El

Just as a matter of interest, is your hard drive an SSD?

Moonie

I was able to restart my computer. Computers transmit data from and to hard drives throughout the time they are on. I could hear a regular sound from the drive (not loud but I noticed it). The sound came every second or so. Also noticed that during that time, the computer was nearly unresponsive. After a while the sound stopped and I could use the computer.  I then closed down and restarted. These are symptoms of a failing hard drive.

The C drive is an SSD and has the Windows op system and the various drivers.
The D drive is not an SSD - it's a 1 terabyte Seagate drive. That's where the majority of programs are. Also my user folder is there. When I bought the computer the C drive was a small SSD resulting in it quickly filling up so my user folder was put on the D drive. A couple of years ago I got the SSD drive replaced by a much larger one. Every time there's a Windows update, that automatically goes on the C drive which gets fuller and fuller even with a disk cleanup.

A new hard drive is needed then El

Both my laptops have SSD’s...One laptop has Windows 10 installed the other has Linux OS. Neither has large SSD’s but I have two external drives, one a terabyte and one a half terabyte. Tbh I don’t use them very often now. I just keep their OS’s and antivirus up to date.
My iPad is the thing I use everyday

Assuming that the D drive does have to be replaced, although I would have to reinstall programs I don't have a huge quantity of them. All client data is on an external SSD drive so that's not an issue. (and I've got another external SSD drive for taking backups of client data).

Just as well it's a quiet time for client work.

It certainly is El

Because of the work I do, I use a full size pc as laptops would be too small and an ipad a non-starter

Evening all

We’ve had a lot of rain and sleet over the last 48 hours.

Moonie, I’m fine, I was just really tired last night and conked out at 7.30pm

El, I’m sorry to hear you are still having computer problems. I hope you get things sorted out soon.

We’ve had at least 6 β€œInternational/out of area” calls on our landline in the last week or so. We have caller display so we just ignore them. I hate scammers

Summer, I wish I had your energy - please do a workout for me

I hope you’ve all had a good day

Hi Yogi

It bucketing down with rain here now

I’m glad you’re okay

I had one of those earlier but didn’t answer. I usually have my landline blocker on but I am expected some calls that could possibly be blocked if the aren’t recognised.

My day has been good, I hope yours has too
