I note that the Sky Arts channel is showing "Dinner for One" this evening. It's a short black and white German film made in 1963 about an elderly woman and her butler. It's her 90th birthday and she's having a party for 4 of her friends who have died. So the butler impersonates them by drinking a toast and gets drunker and drunker. The film has become a Christmas staple in Germany and is shown on television every year. The Germans find it hysterically funny. I don't know if it will be shown in German with English subtitles or in English.

I’ve heard of that!!! My boyfriends grandfather was German and he told me all about that movie, I saw clips of it on you tube

Good evening everyone and happy new year! (Almost) I hope you’re all warm, cosy and having a good day. How are you all?

Moonie, that’s superb news about your swans!!!

I worked later last night due to the tier 4 announcement, went grocery shopping after and have been settling into home life again since. Today was so beautiful I went out walking in places I haven’t been lately, the deep frost has frozen all the muddy fields solid!

Fankoo Sweet

You have been a busy 🐝

A happy and healthy New Year to you and Miss Bramble 🐾🐾

Moonie

Good morning and a Happy New Year to you

Another cold amd frosty start here. Cloudier than yesterday.

If you've still got Adobe Flash Player on your device uninstall it as security updates ended as of yesterday and all videos and animations will cease to run as from the 12th. It was plagued with security issues and was old.

I hope everyone has a good day.

I think in will recorded that, thanks El

an even older film on now on the Horror Channel. Steve McQueen’s film debut, the Blob, 1958

I've never bothered to see that though I've heard of it
Although it was McQueen's first film as the lead actor he had a couple of films before then though uncredited . His first credited role was in "Never Love a Stranger". John Drew Barrymore was the lead in that. It's been on the Talking Pictures channel fairly recently though it's not a particularly good film. That Barrymore was the son of John Barrymore (a major star a long time ago and brother of Lionel and Ethel who were also major stars). And John Drew Barrymore was the father of Drew Bayymore.

You are always a mind of unknown information, to me, at least El. Fankoo

Evening all

I hope 2021 is a vast improvement on last year

Very chilly here today. I went out to lock the garage and it’s already very frosty.

El, I knew the actor Mark Eden as Alan Bradley in Coronation Street. Gave up watching it a couple of years ago.

Moonie, we didn’t venture out today either.

Hi Yogi

You and me both. We need the vaccines rolled and quick too

We are sensible

*night owls* good evening lovelies I hope day 1 of 2021 has been good to you. I’ve had a lovely day; walking, yoga, studying, cooking and washing fox poo off of the dirty little hound she’s scared of fireworks but luckily there hasn’t been as many tonight

yogi mentioned steak pie and it inspired me to pop a beef casserole in the slow cooker. The house smells amazing already!

leaving huge goodnight hugs :hugs: for you all

Hi and bye Sweet

I bet Miss Bramble wasn’t to pleased about being β€˜washed’

I’m glad you had a nice day together πŸ™‚

Sounds delicious 🀀

I did watch that "Dinner for One" short film. Other than the introduction, it was in English rather than subtitled. The two leads were played by English people. The butler was played by Freddie Frinton who had done the sketch many times on stage, his bakckground was as a music hall comedian. So although he played the part very well you knew what was going to happen shortly after the sketch began. Watchable once but I've no intention of watching it every year. No BBFC rating but I guess a PG as it ends on a suggestive note and wink by Frinton to the audience.
Incidentally, he was a tee-totaller.
