Watched "Crossfire" (1947) last evening. A film noir but notable for the unusal style of photography (reminded me of early German expressionist films such as "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari" and for tackling the issue of anti-semitism and bigotry.
The film was nominated for 5 Oscars but didn't win any. It's thought that it may have been due to the director Edward Dmytryk and producer (Robert) Adrian Scott shortly afterwards were named as two of the "Hollywood Ten", the ten who had refused to co-operate with The House Un-American Activities Committee investigating those accused of being a communist or a communist sympathiser or telling being prepared to tell the committee of those they had suspicions of.
A few years later Dmytryk changed his mind so was able to resume making films. Scott's film career was all but destroyed. The only film of note was wrtiting the story under an assumed name for the British 1960 film "Conspiracy of Hearts" (a very good film about a group of Catholic nuns sheltering Jewish children during WW II).

A short documentary with a little love story being shown on Talking Pictures later this afternoon called "A Symphony of London" (1939). A portrait of life in London pre-war.
Also on Youtube as "Another Day":

I noted that it was edited by Julian Wintle. I think it probable that it's the same Julian Wintle who later moved into television and film producing most notably the series of The Avengers which had Diana Rigg as Mrs Emma Peel.

I had the radio on yesterday afternoon and listenng to Radio 3. Not a piece of classical music that I recognised though it did sound not unlike Gustav Mahler. I didn't have the sound on high but then something strange happened. I wondered if something had gone wrong with my radio or something else. Turned out that my radio was fine.
I checked to see what the music was. Turns out that it was Mahler and it was his 10th symphony. Well, sort of. Like Beethoven, Mahler only completed 9 symphonies. Mahler had worked on a tenth but he died before finishing it. The version I heard was an attempt to complete it by Deryck Cooke.

If you start at about 53 minutes in and wait a couple of minutes you'll realise why I thought something had gone wrong with my radio. Don't have the sound on high though.
