Watched "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949), one of those films regarded as a classic western. Hadn't seen it before as the subject matter as it was about American calvalry (soldiers on horseback) versus native Americans (not called that in the film, using the word which has ceased to be acceptable). John Ford and John Wayne. One of those films any film buff would be expected to have seen.
Good use of tenhicolour in the location setting of Monument Valley. A light hearted fight sequence between Victor McLagen being arrested for being drunk and improperly dressed whilst on duty and the soldiers sent to arrest him. Mildred Natwick is great and sorts him out at the end. A clear forerunner of the fight sequence in "The Quiet Man" (1952) between McLagen and Wayne. Not really much else to say about the film though Wayne ultimately stops the war in a peaceful way rather than carnage.

El is an education lesson. He is

Mainly on older films

Saturday's Pointless Celebrities final question was on film pairs.
They could come up with 3 answera of any of the three topics and won if any of them were pointless (100 random people get asked the questions beforehand and it none of them mention one of the answers the contestants say, then that's pointless)
Films of the1940s or 1950s with Ingrid Bergman or Cary Grant
Films of the 1960s or 1970s with Sophia Loren or Peter Sellers
Films of the 1980s or 1990s with Meg Ryan or Tom Cruise.

They came up with three good answers. Dr Stramgelove (Sellers) got 9 points, Marriage Italian Style (Loren) that's a 1964 Italian film, a really good answer but that got 1 point. Theit 3rd answer was Far and Away (Cruise). I thought that would get more points than the Loren film but it was pointless so they won the jackpot.

I did come up with a pointless answer but I went for "Arsenic and Old Lace" (Grant). That's a 1944 film directed by Frank Capra and is a black comedy.  As a bit of trivia, a tombstone seen in the film has the name "Archie Leach" which was Grant's real name. As I said, the film's a black comedy.

I came across this piece of choral music which may interest @Rocking Ros Rose
Alissa Firsova's "Stabat Mater" Audio only:

Quite ethereal. Alissa Firsova is a Russian-British composer, pianist and conductor. The music would have been composed about 5 years ago. I think it may have been based on part of James MacMillan's Stabat Mater which was composed around the same time but this is sung a cappella (voices only, whereas MacMillans's version is much longer and is for orchestra and voices).

Good morning everyone

Some sunshine here and a forecast of a high of 17Β°. Just the one day. Lots of rain forecast for tomorrow particularly throughout the morning. Storm Barbara hits the southeast today (named by Portugal rather than by the Met Office).

Yogi, I hope you are continuing to feel better

I hope everyone has a good day

Been a busy morning for me doing client work.

A small company which is getting smaller and smaller is intending to deregister for VAT. They are entitled to do that. Trouble is that the company has got lots of unpaid sales invoices which go back a long time. Company has paid over the VAT to HMRC. If it deregisters it can't then recover the VAT from HMRC if the sales invoice never gets paid. (they can if the customer goes bankrupt but not if it doesn't pay). The directot hasn't been in the best of health and I suspect that he's let things slide in terms of getting paid, I've warned him again about this, What he should do if he does deregister is to, before doing that, go through and issue credit notes for those he's not going to get paid so recovers the VAT in the final VAT return.

If he does that and subsequently gets paid he has to repay the VAT back to HMRC.

Issuing credit notes, then deregistering, then once deregisted reissues the invoice without VAT is illegal.

That client job sounds like a nightmare to a layman like me

I thought you'd find something to do

Re that client. When I have done the VAT returns over the years I have to follow what is called the reverse charge procedure. I won't attempt to explain it as that really is complicated to understand
If you really want to know what that is:

But I don't advise you to look

HMRC are introducing a domestic reverse charge system from 1 March next year. That's going to affect contractors and sub-contractors in the building sector. Different from the system I was referring to - this one is going to apply to far more people who are registered for VAT and work in that sector. It's been in the pipeline for months Those affected should be aware of this but I suspect many won't.

How do you manage to keep up with all these changes and still find time to do work El

I don't have the level of client work I used to. I used to do that huge job which would take up quite a lot of September and October. I chose to give that up as the client had a fundamental change in the accounting software they used. It would have cost either them or me a couple of grand a year for an extra licence to use the software. I think they are having to do the work that I used to. They have a small accounts department but one of them was taking an AAT course (accounting technician) so she would have the ability to do what I did. Whether she had the time is a different matter. The work I was doing would have been normally done by an internal company accountant if the company was bigger. There's another firm of accountants who do the final touches to the company accounts and deal with the filing requirements. It's work which I do for smaller clients - they are of a size where they should use a larger practice than just me.

That’s interesting

Moonie

BBC iPlayer has a collection of films from RKO from Hollywood's Golden Age. 27 films shown at the time of posting which are availabel to watch for over a year:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/group/p07y2frq
They've been on television, some quite recently. Lots of gems there. Varied genres covered, musicals, comedies, dramas, westerns, action films and old horror films (very mild compared to modern ones). The last one isn't a film but a a collection of some of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers songs.

Good morning everyone

As forecast, it's raining here and expected to continue well into the afternoon though the heaviest this morrning.

Yogi, I hope you are continuing to get better

Moonie, yes, Cheltenham beat Scunthorpe 1-0 with an early justified penalty. They remain in 3rd place in the table. The top 9 sides have between 12 and 16 points so very close. Cambridge are top and have a much better goal difference than any other side so seem favourites to be champions at this early stage of the season.

I hope everyone has a good day

Good evening all

Thank you for your good wishes. I’m afraid my meds aren’’t working and atm there is no alternative.
I have bad days and not so bad days and I’ll pop in here on the not so bad days.
Sadly, I’ve had to make the decision to put tiddler minding on hold, as my compromised immune system combined with the rising Covid infection rate is making it too risky.
Hope you are all well and staying safe.

Goodnight and sweet dreams, Ros and Moonie

Awww poor Yogi

Sad to see your meds aren’t working

I hope the good days will be more frequent than the bad ones

It is sad you won’t be able to have the little ones visiting but totally understandable with the way you are and the rising Covid infection rate

Feel much better very soon Yogi
