Good morning everyone.    Nice and sunny here at the moment but don't know how long that will last.

Glad to hear you had a good night Yogi and that you are feeling a little better.

El Loro, I keep getting a message come up on my computer telling me to install a new Java system.  Should I do this or will it mess my computer up?  Don't know about any of these things and No.1 son is not around to ask at the moment.

Hi Yogi x

Hi Skylark, I'm due a check up at the opticians but I keep putting it off.

The last time I went, Mr Yogi nearly fainted at the cost. I think he needs time to recover from paying for the kitchen, before I hit him with another bill.

Hi squiggle El and Ros x

Nor me but it is Java so I suppose it is trustworthy.  I did stop future updates though and for Adobe Reader, all these updates I am sure they are not necessary, hi to you too Skylark by the way

Ok I'm all caught up, looks like I missed a good chuckle yesterday Yogi, wishing you a speedy recovery Glee was fantastic thank you, the cast are all very very good singing live, and I would definitely go again if they come back next year I rarely dance but just couldn't help myself last night Tomorrow is my last day at work, we leave Saturday lunchtime! I'll call in on Saturday morning before I turn off my phone
~Sparkling Summer~

I tend to keep things like Reader, Java etc up to date, as sometimes the updates are to correct security weaknesses which have been found in the program. Hackers are capable of exploiting weaknesses in programs and it's a constant battle between them and the good guys.

If I get a message about an update, I try to check the technical background notes to the update before I accept the update, just to make sure that it's a genuine update.

Glad you enjoyed Glee, and I can understand why you had to dance.

I'm sure you are going to have a fabulous time in Tuscany and look forward to hearing all about it when you get back. Only two more sleeps to go!

If El or my son say it's okay to update, then I do it.

Its interesting what you say about updates not being genuine, I had never thought of that before   Adobe Reader was driving me potty with updates, one every few days or so, I thought enough is enough.  I am wary of updates generally, and its something that my computer guy agrees with me about.  He stopped Microsoft updates on both my computers after one night it decided to update itself, crashed the PC and even he could not get it working.  Needless to say we had to reinstall everything

squiggle

With updates, I try to have a look at the Adobe or equivalent website to have a look at their update pages to see what version they show and the technical notes behind that version should show when the update was released. If it is recent, and if my version shows an earlier version number, then I can be fairly certain that the update message I have received is genuine. Quite often with update messages, there is a link to the program website with this info shown.

Another way is to ignore the update message, and to download an update direct from the appropriate website.

All of which takes time, and it's fine if you are fairly computer savvy, but not so great if you're not.

El Loro

Over the past few weeks, every few days I get a phone call from Tucan Claims which is based in Bridegend. They are one of these claim management companies, and once they have your phone number they will keeping on ringing you and I can see from searches on Google that they are notoriously persistent. (Bad mark 1 - harrassment)

Generally I put the phone down on them after a few seconds, but yesterday I decided to see what they had to say for themselves. And before you say Telephone Preference Service, they claim to get around this by saying that this is not a sales call.(Bad mark 2 - of course this is a sales call).

They first talked about payment protection insurance on my mortgage. They told me that although my mortgage was paid off 2-3 years ago, I would be able to make a claim for mis-sold insurance. When I told them I hadn't paid off my mortgage and still had it, they still insisted that I had paid of my mortgage. (Bad mark 3 - their database is wrong) (Bad mark 4 - the customer is always wrong) Anyway I told them that I had cancelled my protection insurance 19 years ago, so that the statute of limitations would prevent me from being able to make a claim.(When I became self-employed I cancelled the policy as under its terms I would only be able to make a claim once the Revenue had formally written to confirm that I had ceased trading so I realised that it was unlikely I would ever be able to make a claim). I also told them that I had no other payment protection insurances.

They then moved on to raised credit card limits. They claim that if the credit card company had ever increased your limit, the company had to get your written agreement to this. The likelyhood of any credit card company doing this is remote. So I would be able to claim ÂĢ2500 compensation for this. That's what they said. I am aware that if people have incurred penalties as a result of taking out more than they can afford on credit cards with unauthorised increased limits, they may have a case for compensation. Also they may be able to get the debt cancelled. But in my case I have always paid off my credit cards in full automatically every month and have therefore never paid any interest, credit card fees or any penalties.

My knowledge of the law in this country is that you get damages to compensate you for any loss incurred, and as I have never incurred any loss I cannot see anyway in which I could get compensation of ÂĢ2,500. I am not prepared to pay out an upfront fee of ÂĢ249-99 to be told in due course that no compensation is due to me.

Tucan Claims has a legal licence to act as a claims management company, but they do seem to be right on the edge of legaily.

El Loro

El, it really annoys me that some people will be suckered into paying ÂĢ250 fee to these companies, when they are probably not due any compensation anyway.

I keep getting text messages from an accident claims company, telling me that I am due more than ÂĢ3,500 for the accident I had. I haven't had an accident and I have no idea how they got my mobile number.

It seems to me that the government needs to tighten up on accident and claims management companies, as well as those cowboy companies purporting to be debt collection agencies. Oh, and don't get me started on those legalised Loan Sharks (IMO) who advertise on TV, with APR rates in the thousands!

Whereas Tucan is legal (ish) , those people claiming to be from Microsoft are out and out criminals. I've had that phone call, and I know that it is a gang based on India near Kolkata.

El Loro

El, I know there is a Claims Management Services Regulator in England and Wales, but I'm not sure whether it is a "toothless dog" organisation.

I know the Debt Collection industry is also regulated but they seem to get away with atrocious behaviour, even when they have been reported to the Office of Fair Trading and Trading Standards. There needs to be stricter regulations and much more severe sanctions against the companies who fail to comply.

Skylark, I'm glad you didn't get caught out by that scam, especially as your pooter has been playing up recently.
