Good morning everyone

Cloudy here at present. Heavy rain forecast for the afternoon into the evening, eases for a time over night, then heavy thundery showers forecast for tomorrow.

Yogi, I hope you had a good night's sleep

Apparently we used to have that version of "While Shepherds Watch" sung at our church years ago but I can't recall it. Could have been at the nine lessons and carols service at Christmas time.

I hope everyone has a good day

For those of you interested BBC One showed the trailer for its adaptation of H G Wells's War of the Worlds last night.

It's on Youtube if you want to see it though it's on the scary side:

Eleanor Tomlinson (instantly recognisable from Poldark) and Rafe Spall are the leads. Seems to be 3 episodes. Unlike the two best known film versions this is set in this country (as was the book) and is set in Edwardian times (the book was written towards the end of Queen Victoria's life) so not in modern times.

All's well here Velvet

The rain is expected to start here soon and is forecast to last around 6 hours. Dry overnight but the rain returns tomorrow morning with the threat of thunderstorms. Met Office yellow warning in place for a siseable area - very likely to have flooding but not expected to have a high impact.

Velvet, clearly the day for things not working.

In colder wetter conditions my car engine can start to make a chugging noise after a few minutes and slows the car down. Had been OK for several months. Noticed it back on Sunday to church and again when coming home. Noticed it again this morning on the way to tha client. After I left him I went to the local Co-op. When I'd done the shopping, started the car, after a couple of seconds the engine warning light came on (never done that before). So I took the car in to where I got in serviced last week. I showed them and left the car with them for investigation.

I hope it’s something simple El, it could be just a fuse

I'll let you know once I hear back from them, they need to open up the engine to see if there's water inside (from the rain) - that's the starting off point. Although the car is 17 years old, the mileage is a bit over 40,000 miles as I only do about 2,000 miles a year.

Update on my car. There was some rainwater in the engine compartment. Rainwater gets in but if it gets to a certain level the excess gets eliminated - the car engineer said that the engine design isn't that good. (Ford Fiesta 2002-2008 range).

What they found was that one of the spark plugs had a crack in it. They'ce replaced the plugs, cleaned the area they are socketed and greased the sockets to improve connection. The plugs were 4 years old. only about 8,000 miles since but almost all my journeys are short ones which shortens their lifespan.

I've got the car back to see what happens over the next week to see if the problem is sorted or recurs.

Good morning everyone

Sunny cold start here.

Squiggle, because of the low mileage I do, the service was done as an interim one rather than a full one. They don't look in the engine to check spark plugs as a result. I hadn't had any problems at that time. If the problems continue and it's a really expensive job to sort out then a replacement car would be the way I'd need to go.

I hope everone has a good day

For some time I've been trying to identify a well known piece of classical music. I thought it was most likely to be by J S Bach but his output was huge making it difficult. It was a piece of music which went through my mind but I hadn't actually heard it for many years. By chance last night I turned over to Classic FM and there it was at last.

It comes from his Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BWV 140, a choral cantata. Here's the complete cantata:

It's in 7 sections and it's the 4th section which is the specific piece of music.(starts at 15 minutes 19 seconds),

Bach separated that 4th section as his BWV 645 so I'll post that as well:

It's popularly known as Sleepers Awake. A warning though that it's one of those pieces which sticks in the mind

Not the spark plugs. Went for a short test drive about half an hour ago. Chugging sound started after about 3 minutes and I knew would get more noticably. So took it back to the car repair place - the man I've been dealing with could hear for himself the noise. Left the car there for further investigation. Only happens when the engine is starting from cold.

A 140 is what you need. Treat yourself.

Re the Sleepers Awake music. I have vague memories of it being used as the theme music for a 1962 BBC serial called Katy. It was based on Susan Coolidge's book called "What Katy Did" which was an 1872 American children's book, sort of a "Little Women" though Katy is younger aged 12.

The serial was notable being very early roles for Susan Hampshire (Katy Carr) and Michelle Dotrice (Clover Carr).

Serial is long lost and BBC Genome and IMDB have no details as to the music used so no chance of being able to find out if I'm right about Sleepers Awake.
