El I hope the cable remains in tact, it’s not the same on here if you’re not around

good afternoon everyone I hope you’re all having a lovely day. Bramble is making me giggle, she’s very funny today. Perfect timing too because I’ve been stressed these last few days; I’ve been summoned for jury service and the timing couldn’t be worse (work wise). So after lots of stressing, i’ve had a good think and decided to apply for a deferral. I’m praying they accept it and I can do my duty when work is quiet.

Now that job is done, I’m popping up to the garden centre

squiggle, I hope you get some much needed rain real soon

~Sparkling Summer~

Thanks Summer

There are several stages of the pavement work where the cable is at risk:
first, use of pneumatic drill or circular saw to cut through the old pavement near the cable
second, the removal of the old pavement by their digger
those are expected over the next couple of hours.
I will try to post here once that's done later today - if I don't, you'll know what's happened.
thirdly, the smoothing down of the earth beneath and the putting down of the base pavement covering - the risk is when they use the heavy rollers - that could be any time after the first two stages though I would expect that done before the end of Friday

fourthly, the putting down of the top covering, again with the risk from the heavy rollers - I doubt if that will get done until sometime next week.

Summer, as you can imagine jury service for me would be a nightmare as I work by myself. There would be times of the year where that would be near catastrophic because of client work. If that happened I would have to apply for a deferral though I'm not sure that one can make for a second deferral. Both my father and my brother have done jury service, though my mother never got called. Obviously they didn't talk much about it but I think they found it alright (both were in employment so more straightfoward than for people like you and me).

Although the old pavement outside has been removed without my cable being damaged, getting a car over between road and drive is near impossible with a 2 inch drop where the pavement was without damage. Once the base cover has been done it should be better. That's more likely on Friday rather than tomorrow. Just as well I made sure that I don't have to see any clients.

Squiggle, I can send you some of my rain if you like?

Summer, I hope you manage to get the jury thing sorted out

El, I’ll keep everything crossed there is no damage to your Virgin cable and the pavement is finished soon.

Moonie, those pics are brilliant

I hope you’ve all had a good day

Good morning everyone we've had a teeny bit of rain but just mizzle, not really much good for the garden. We've had to top up the pond which shows how little rain we've had. I hope you get your deferment Summer. I heard of a bizarre thing recently where a judge got called for jury service on a trial he was due to preside over! It was in the paper so it must be true! Those cygnets are so cute Moonie.

Enjoy your day everyone

Good morning everyone

Some sunshine here at present.

Thanks Yogi re my cable and pavement

Summer, the cookie consent on this site relates to a cookie from a 3rd party company from which Social Strata got some of the behind the scenes programming for all their sites. So it's something which we have to put up with - I think the consent is required every 30 days.

Squiggle, I assume that that judge was able to get that jury service deferred without any problem.

I hope everyone has a good day

Good morning Buddies

It’s a dry and sunny start to the day. Dark clouds on the horizon but no rain forecast. We will see

Washing on the line. No shopping to do today

Have a great day everyone

Remarkable news story of a baby born weighing just 245g (8.6oz), believed to be the tiniest on record to survive premature birth, who, five months on, was discharged weighing a healthy 5.6 pounds (2.5kg), confounding all expectations.

Includes photos of the baby now and also shortly after she was born.

The road workers have been laying the base cover of the pavement this morning but ran out of material when they got to my drive. They put a notional amount at the drive side to make access lightly better (though so little that it's not much better). They've gone off for the day and they say they'll do it tomorrow morning. Doesn't affect me as I wasn't intending to drive anywhere today, but my neighbours won't be happy. I walked to the local shop to get things like bread and milk.

Dear me El, they aren’t exactly busting a gut are they?

Moonie

Goodness me Squiggle! I guess that proves that the summons for jury service is randomly selected

i hope you're all having a lovely day, it’s breezy but very mild here. I’ve never known the local areas to be so dry. Puddles that have been there for years have now dried up!

Zero chance of the work being finished by tomorrow, the revised end date. I think it's now looking to be by the end of next week which means I'll have to postpone yet another client meeting (next Thursday. It's hardly an isolated case in this part of the country. I've previously mentioned the one near the local university. Today, the local news has reported that the roadworks on the A40 Golden Valley bypass which began in January and was due to finish by the end of June will now go on for a further 6 weeks.

That's concerning for your area It's a dry day here but there's been a fair amount of rain this month and virtually every day next week is forecast for some rain.

Can't you sue them for loss of earnings El?

Moonie

Afternoon all.

Summer and Squiggle, if you are in need of rain, I’ve got enough for all.

El, it’s not good that the pavement work is impacting on your work

Been to Morrisons - no cakes I’m afraid  Sorry Moonie

Yogi19

Moonie, you do have a valid comment but it would be highly unlikely that I could succeed in a claim for loss of earnings. The general rule is that unless there's a statutory right of a claim (I think there's one re water companies where their roadworks have directly hit the earnings of something like a shop). And in any case I haven't had a loss of earnings, just a delay. If I brought a claim I would have to incur legal costs so I would be silly to try.

I would have a better chance with my business insurance but to do that I would need to prove that it was impossible to access my office (and I work from home) and it's more a case of inadvisable rather than impossible.

Little BBC quiz on cricket terminology:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/48257554

Very simple for anyone who follows cricket and not so for those who don't but even so it might amuse you.

I did get 10/10 but then I've followed cricket all my life.

I did this earlier tonight. I know nothing about cricket but managed to get 10/10

I knew duck and crease but, the other 8 were complete guesses
