I can't take Eurovision seriously, Squiggle.

Weird outfits, strange singers, rubbish songs and block voting - but it's good for a laugh.

You'll be a great godmother, Summer - you'll be the fun auntie.

I've had a nice day thanks, taking it easy. No 1 and 2 sons paid me a visit in the afternoon, so it was all good.

How did Mr Summer get on with his trek, have you heard from him yet?

I used to like it when Terry Wogan did it but I know he was getting fed up with the way the votes were going.  He was so funny though.

Terry was really funny.

I have accepted the nobody likes us or will vote for us and just watch it as a bit of fun.

Good morning everyone

A nice sunny morning at present.

You remember the bit about me delivering the church magazines having been told the incorrect road name. Yesterday afternoon I went to collect the subs from the correct houses. I had already collected from one house - the man who could talk for England. I tried the first house. There was no reply but I could see that the door at the back of the house was wide open, and went to see if there was someone there. There was a very old woman sitting there. I explained who I was and she eventually understood. She got up with considerable difficulty and got some money for me. She said her daughter wasn't there, so I guess that her daughter looks after her. Her legs were heavily bandaged, so she obviously is getting cared for, but I almost felt guilty about asking her for money.

The next house, there was no reply (again). I'll will try again and will put a note through the letter box next time. Judging by the state of the door, I suspect that the owner is very old and may now be living in a care home.

There was a reply from the last house. Another elderly woman was there. At least she seemed to be in fair health.

The houses in that little cul-de-sac would have been built in the 1950s, and judging from the people who I have seen, I wouldn't be surprised if they are the original house owners.

El Loro

Good morning everyone, a bright very breezy morning here.

EL I found your post very touching, especially about the original owners in their houses dealing with the difficulties that come with age.  Reminds me of that bit in Lost for Words when Thora Hird's character has had a stroke and is lying in a hospital bed with the nurses more or less ignoring her, and then her son brings in a picture of when she was young and puts it on the bedside table.

squiggle

Good morning everyone. Breezy and showery today.

El, I agree with Squiggle and found your post very touching. My mother has a saying, "Old age doesn't come itself".

I remember that play with Thora Hird and Pete Postlethwaite. I think it was called "Lost For Words". It was such a poignant drama, and played to perfection by Thora and Pete.

that's fantastic El! What a great cake There really are some very talented creative people out there Thank you too, I'm pleased to report that the meringue tasted good, phew! I think I'll cook it for longer next time, I think like boiling eggs, it's trial & error with how cooked you like your meringue Squiggle, i was on the forum last night from my home computer (el, the smilie thread is all cleaned up now) and it's the first time I've seen your avatar move! I love it
~Sparkling Summer~

Summer I agree about meringues and of course for a Pavlova meringue you want it a bit chewy.  I think my sister used to do meringues in an oven turned off from hot and left to do slowly.  When I make lemon meringue pie I like my meringue crisp on the outside and soft in the middle.

Glad you have seen (and liked) my hatching avatar

Good morning everyone

Yogi, I don't know what type of overn you use. My mother was scared of the possibility of gas leaks/explosions, so she insisted on using electric ovens and heating. I use a gas oven. Gas ovens seem to result in much more even cooking than electic ones.

A cloudier day than recently, but little rain forecast.

El Loro

Good morning everyone. Very windy and raining up here.

El, I am using an electric oven. I blame Mr Yogi for wrecking it, when he cooked a few hundred chicken portions for a bowling club BBQ  - the oven never was never the same afterwards. Then again, it could just be old age that's wrong with it.

My nana always had a gas oven and she was the best baker in the world - everything always turned out perfectly - so you may be right about gas cooking more evenly.

Yogi19

But having looked online between gas and electric ovens, they seem to reckon that electric ovens cook more evenly than gas, provided they have fans. Gas ovens are hotter at the bottom compared to the top but electric ones are the same temperature. This means with gas ones that you can cook dishes which require different heats at the same time, but this requires some experience as to results. Gas hobs cook more evenly than electric ones and you have greater instant control over the heat.
