Good morning all

It’s raining.

Summer, I hope you aren’t rushed off your feet today

lol El, I wonder if it’s mostly women who have booked those flights now the football season has started.

Have a good day, everyone.

Yogi19

Yogi, I hope the rain isn't ruining your plans if you had intended to be out

If it's women fleeing the country because the football season is starting, they'll be needing very long holidays

Squiggle, I hoping it's less cloudy for you now, it's quite sunny here,

There's a 1957 film called "The Story of Mankind". It's noted for two things. Firstly a cast which has Ronald Colman as the spirit of mankind, Hedy Lamarr as Joan of Arc, Virginia Mayo as Cleopatra, Agnes Morehead as Queen Elizabeth I, Charles Coburn as Hippocrates, and lots of other quite well known actors and actresses.

Secondly, the reason you are unlikely to have ever heard of it or seen it is that it has the reputation of being exceptionally dreadful. It doesn't know if it's a comedy or a drama so ends up by being a mess.

There are some clips of it on Youtube. I'll just post one as at least it's watchable even if not the most likely person to have been selected to play Sir Isaac Newton.

Groucho and Chico were also in the film. There are clips of those on Youtube - Chico's is so brief that there's no point; Groucho's is more substantial but, although it might have been acceptable at 1957, would cause offence now due to treating native Indians in the States as objects of ridicule so I'm not posting that.

Watched a 2016 film called Love & Friendship. Based on a novella by Jane Austen called "Lady Susan". It was an early work (around 1794) which she never submitted for publication though it was eventually published more than 50 years after her death. Radio Times review though quite highly of it. I didn't. Lady Susan (Kate Beckinsale) isn't a nice person, a real schemer.

The music score was of note though with heavy use of classical music written in the century leading up to the 1790s. (there was one error though as Beethoven's cello sonata number 3 wasn't composed in 1808 so a decade after the time the film was set). Really could have done without the music used in the first scene as utterly inappropriate and it put me off the film. (the march from Purcell's funeral for Queen Mary which can only have been used in order to be sarcastic)

Good evening goodness me, Iya been another non stop day! I don’t know what day or tone it is anymore lol

actually i’m Taking it all in my stride I’ve never felt so calm

I’m about to tackle bookkeeping now, I’ve taken the time to eat properly and cut the grass first

i suspect, the football will be watched just as much abroad as it would be here! At least the women can relax in the sun while the men still watch it..?

I hope you've all had a good day

Good morning all

I’ve been up since 6am but I did get some sleep last night.

Good morning everyone

Sunny and warm here, forecast to get to 28 C, similar tomorrow, Tuesday not quite as warm, then from Wednesday onwards a sharp drop down to 20C.

Summer, sounds as if you are well organised. Luca Pacioli has a lot to answer for - it was him who back in 1492 published "Summa de Arithmetica"  which set out the rules for double entry book-keeping with the concept of debits and credits. A debit balance in the balance sheet is an asset such as debtors whereas a credit balance is a liability such as creditors. And what can cause confusion is that if your bank balance is called debit by the bank it's overdrawn but that's because as far as the bank is concerned you owe them money so you are a debtor in their balance sheet. A profit and loss account is the other way so a credit is income and a debit is expense (the logic being that for instance you've done work and received cash so the bank balance has done up so a higher debit balance and the other side of the double entry posting has to be a credit = income).

Yogi, I'm glad you had a much better night's sleep

I hope everyone has a good day

Yogi, although "The Story of Mankind" is a film to avoid in the unlikely event it ever gets shown, many people would like "Love & Friendship" so it's not one I'm saying should be avoided. I didn't like it but that's just a personal view. It's bound to get repeated so you could record it. You should be able to tell in the first 10 minutes if you are going to like it or not.

If Lady Susan was to be played by an older actress, the obvious candidate would be Meryl Streep.

Good morning everyone, a beautiful morning, the church bells are ringing out across the valley and there's a promise of a lovely sunny day ahead.  Our two little darlings are enjoying breakfast with their Daddy and having fun before their bath.

BBC1 this evening at 19.30, there's a programme called The Great Cheese Chase. I think it's being shown across the country.

It's about the annual cheese rolling competition down Cooper's Hill near Gloucester. I've mentioned it before, not that I've ever been.

Good morning everyone

It’s raining up here

Sounds like you had a lovely day, Summer

Off to my parents’ to help with housework and bed changing.

Do you know the history behind the cheese rolling, El? I wonder what started it off.

Catch up later, have a good day, all

Yogi19

Yogi, no-one really knows why cheese rolling down the hill started and I doubt if the documentary will be able to come up with any definive proof. It used to be just for local people for centuries before it became world famous.

Wiki has a couple of theories, one about keeping the rights to graze and the other deriving from some pagan ritual.

The cheese rolled is always a double Gloucester which is a semi-hard cheese originally made from milk from the Gloucestershire breed of cattle originally bred in Gloucestershire. There is also the single Gloucester cheese which is matured for a shorter time so doesn't have as strong a taste.

Good morning everyone, grey cloud and not a hint of blue sky anywhere, quite a change from yesterday.  Well at least cheese rolling is a lot more sensible than flaming tar barrel carrying EL.

Enjoy your day everyone

squiggle

Squiggle, the cheese rolling slope is very steep and injuries are probable which is why the local council pulled a plug on it some years ago. It still continues, but isn't officially sanctioned.

Carrying flaming tar barrels is Ottery (St Mary) reckless

I watched the 2015 film Mr Holmes yesterday. I had recorded it quite some time ago as a film to try sometime. I had some misgivings about it as Sherlock Holmes is 93 and in the early stages of dementia so it could have been hard to watch.

I was plesantly surprised as it's not as downbeat as it could have been and the film ends on a satisfying note.

Pluses are Ian McKellen as Holmes and Milo Parker as Roger, the youngster. You'll know Milo Parker as he's Gerald Durrell and there are some similarities between Gerald and Roger.

Roger Allam is in the film but only briefly.

At one point in the film Holmes goes to watch a Sherlock Holmes film and isn't too impressed with it. The Holmes in that film is played by Nicholas Rowe. Back in 1985 Rowe was Holmes in the film "Young Sherlock Holmes".

Worth giving it a go when it's shown again (it was part financed by the BBC so they are the ones most likely to repeat it).

Good morning everyone

Cloudy but quite bright here, not expected to be quite as warm today.

The 1940 comedy film "His Girl Friday" on Talking Pictures this afternoon. The film has been shown quite often over the years but is worth watching if you've never seen it. One of Cary Grant's best films and he and Rosalind Russell are great. He's the newspaper editor and she's his ace reporter.

I hope everyone has a good day

Good morning everyone, much cooler and fresher this morning after some earlier rain which has reinvigorated the lawns nicely.  I like Cary Grant so I might record that film, thanks EL.

Enjoy your day everyone

Good morning Buddies

Its a very hot start to what should be our last hot day, for the next week or so

Shopping already done, washing on the line and more in the washer

Have a lovely day everyone

Moonie

Squiggle, the film was directed by Howard Hughes who also directed Bringing Up Baby. It relies more on the razor sharp dialogue rather than physical comedy and in a verbal sense is regarded as the fastest comedy ever made (in terms of wit rather than speaking very fast). It's a version of The Front Page but is much better than either the earlier 1931 film or the version made in the 1970s by Billy Wilder which I didn't like at all.
