A few days ago I watched a British film called "A Place of One's Own" on the Talking Pictures channel.
Although released in 1945 it must have been made earlier, probably 1944.
It's also on Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7QURJfjQco

It's quite good and has some unusual casting.
James Mason (probably 35 at the time) and Barbara Mullen (best known the BBC series Dr Finlay's Casebook which was one of the most watched TV series of the 1960s) play the recently retired couple who have bought a house which there have been locals rumours of being haunted. No idea why James Mason was chosen to play a character many years older.

Margaret Lockwood joins them as a young companion to Barbara Mullen (incidentally this is the first film where she uses a mole on her face, and that became her trademark. Her love interest is played by Dennis Price, not the type of role he was better known for.

When I saw the credits at the beginning I saw that the additional designs were by a Rex Whistler. I recognised the name so did some searching to confirm that it was the same person. He was a British artist, designer and illustrator. He joined the army and died in Normandy in July 1944 (which is why the film must have been made before 1945). (By the way he designed the restaurant which is named after him at the Tate Modern), He had a brother who was also an artist who outived him. The reason why I know the name is because he and his brother were friends with my mother's mother when they were young many many years ago.

If you want to know what that Russian song on the BBC trailer for the World Cup, it's a traditional song called Ochi Chernye.
Here's is a version of it as it should be sung (audio only)

And the full lyrics in English of Dark Eyes:

Dark Eyes

Translation by katya

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

Dark eyes, flaming eyes
They implore me into faraway lands
Where love reigns, where peace reigns
Where there is no suffering, where war is forbidden

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

Without meeting you, I wouldn't be suffering so
I would have lived my life smiling
You have ruined me, dark eyes
You have taken my happiness forever away

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

Good morning everyone

Pleasant weather here today. I hope the weather is improving for those who have been rained on

By the way Rex Whistler was not related to James Abbott McNeill Whistler, the artist best known for his painting "Whistler's Mother".  JAMW was American. He did come to London for a time where he became interested in lithography as a result of working with an ancestor of not my mother's mother but my mother's father - just a very strange coincidence. (JAMW died before RW was born so they could never have met)

I hope everyone has a good day

Good morning it rained all night here too, it was so nice to listen to! I just got in from walking when the heavens opened. Then I went for tea with a group of friends, which was nice (apart from I thought it was a different pub and some of us went there first looking for the others 😂😂😂😂😂)

popping out for our walk shortly, have a lovely day everyone

yogi i hope you have a nice plan b instead of gardening

Good morning Buddies

Hot early sunshine here but the sun is in and out now

Changed my bed last night at 9-30pm. Washed all the bedclothes last night/early morning. I had all my washing on the line by 9-00am

Washing almost dry now

Breakfast by 10-00am. All lawns mown by 11-30. They only need edging now

My day is off to a good start

Thing is I’m shatttered now already

Have a great day everyone

Moonie

You remember I posted about the elderly Gloucester couple who had parked somewhere in Cheltenham but after their hospital appointment couldn't find where they parked. After an appeal it was found several days later in a car park.

The local council have now waived all but the first penalty notice and it's thought that one of the national newspapers will pay that for the couple.

I had mentioned that the car park had little similarity with the place originally described by the couple - beautiful houses on one side of the road with greenery on the other. The woman has since said that she thinks she must have dreamed that during the night after they mislaid the car.

I hope the tennis is good
Tomorrow's match between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova is the third one on Court Phillippe-Chatrier should be quite some match though one will need earplugs for the grunts

That’s good El

Not really a fan of either tbh and yes earplugs will be needed

I think they are both players to be admired rather than liked

Good morning everyone

Rather cloudy here today though no rain forecast.

Summer, I hope you had a good walk yesterday

Learner drivers now allowed to drive on motorways provided that they are with an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44350285
That seems to be a good idea provided that the instructor considers the learner driver to be ready. Also I think it should be at a time when the motorway is less likely to be at peak usage.

I hope everyone has a good day

Good morning overcast and cool here but I’m very pleased to hear that squiggle has better weather I hope those birds sing all day long

I did enjoy the walk yesterday thank you i aimed to be back on here last night but 3 different friends called me! Each of them had a good rant too, I hope I helped them vent and they hung up feeling chirpier

i didnt know maria sharapova was back, is she playing Wimbledon this year?!

~Sparkling Summer~

Summer, I'm glad you enjoyed your walk and I hope your friends were happier as a resuly of them chatting with you

Maria Sharapova has been back playing tennis for over a year now. She wasn't in Wimbledon last year as her rankings had plummetted as a result of being suspended for over a year and the organisers did not give her a wild card. Her ranking is back up to 29 at this time so she should go straight into the main draw for Wimbledon this year.

And breaking news that she's into the next round of the French Open as Serena Williams has withdrawn - she will say why in a news conference but it's thought she may have an arm injury.

I see on my local news website that cameras have been installed at the stretch of the A40 just after the GCHQ roundabout going into Cheltenham cenrtre. It's to catch drivers who wrongly use the bus lane. I have noticed people doing that for years and it's about time.  There's no excuse as there are plenty of warnings on signs and on the road that the inner lane is a bus lane. In future offenders will get fined. (taxi drivers and cyclists can also use the bus lane).

I found out something this afternoon when I saw my client. She happened to mention someone that she had known called Luke Bond.
For those interested in the recent Royal Wedding he was the organist for the wedding:
https://www.royal.uk/music-st-...apel-wedding-service

When he was a youngster he was in our church choir. He told the organist that he was interested in learning to play the organ and as a result he did his early practising there. Later he got a scholarship to King's School in Gloucester where he did his secondary education (that school is connected with the cathedral so perfect for him).

Here's a clip of him:

Good afternoon sunny but very cold here, brrrrr!!!!!!!

I hope you’re all well and keeping warm

El, thanks for the maria update, I always liked her (apart from the noise) so I’m glad she’s back and her 2nd chance is going well

last night’s activities were mainly assignments for this course I’ve been doing, the last module is coming this week so I’m almost finished. It has taken up twice as much time as originally planned but it’s been an insightful & enjoyable experience. Much of it is based on mindset, not just business finances & practises, which is right up my street.

As you all know, I had a challenging time of life a few years ago but I can honestly say that I’ve bounced back stronger & happier than I ever have been, I’m absolutely loving my life

speaking of...

there’s a tv first tonight, a live yoga class!!! I am recording it, I may join in if I’ve got the energy after my own yoga class, but i’ll Probably just watch it whilst eating cereal lol
