The long running saga with my client who had paid off her student loan in November 2016 but was still being required to pay some through her self assessment tax in January this year is still continuing. She hadn't authorised me to contact HMRC about this in the hope that it would sort itself out. When I looked on her 2017/18 tax return page on the HMRC site (it's moved from 2016/17 to 2017/18 overnight as it's a new tax year) I found that the flag for student loans on her tax return is still set so that by default she would have to pay more next January.
So I got in touch with her and told her to authorise me to contact HMRC as we can't let this go on. She did and I've contacted them.
Although I rang the agent number, they were able to put me through to their student loan department. That has not been possible in the past so that's clearly a change in policy. The woman I spoke to agreed to get the 2016/17 element reversed so once that goes through I'll be able to get it repaid to my client.
The 2017/18 issue may be a bit more complex and the woman I spoke to said she would need to talk to someone and would come back to me. I think it may be that we will have to file the 17/18 tax return using HMRC's own tax return system rather than using the 3rd party tax software I usually use.
Thank goodness youâre on the ball El, I hope they can get it swiftly resolved for you both
Thanks Moonie and Summer
The film rights will be with either Ridley Scott if I opt for the epic way or Ken Loach for the hard hitting social aspect way
My brother will be arriving shortly for a weekend visit so I won't be around here much.
I hope you all have a good weekend
PS , it appears that the Thornton cakes he's brought in the past are no longer available. He's bringing some Sainsbury's blueberry muffins instead:
You are welcome to try some if you want

Donât worry El, theyâre only squirrel shaped
PB stated that yesterdayâs batch of pancakes didnât look like roadkill, they looked like squirrels, so I think my technique is improving.

It's an all star cast. Danny Thompson on double bass and Aly Bain. Amongst others. I'm glad you liked it and it's a grower
