I will, Summer
I'm on top of the work I have in including that particularly complex tax return. 3 clients yet to get their papers to me, 1 coming in on Tuesday, 1 on Wednesday and 1 yet to. That last one is a simple tax return. That client is one who leaves things to the last minute which is not good.
There is also the long running issue of the client with the student loan repayments. She was paying some through payroll and some through her tax return. She paid the loan off in November 2016. The Student Loan Company instructed HMRC to instruct her employer to cease the payroll deductions at that time which happened. For her 2015/16 tax return she had to pay some loan repayment in January 2017 even though it had been paid. SLC eventually instructed HMRC to stop that around October 2017 and she got it back from HMRC.
But as HMRC had set the tax return flag on for 2016/17 (as she was making payroll deductions) her liability at the end of this month includes a loan repayment again. We ticked box 3 on the return in the relevant section and the return was submitted before the cut off point of 31 October 2017. That is supposed to get the East Kilbride section of HMRC to contact SLC to get it corrected if it's not due. That has yet to happen.
There is the small point that SLC would hardly have put a stop on the payroll deductions in November 2016 if there was any loan left. So it would be impossible for them to put any into the 2016/17 tax return as that return can't be filed until after 5 April 2017 so they cannot know what non-employment income she would have on that return - unless they have a time machine.
There is a flaw in the HMRC systems where someone is paying repayments both through payroll and tax returns. When during the course of a tax year SLC tells HMRC to stop the payroll deductions (so the PAYE computer systems) if the person also does tax returns the flag for tax returns (self assessment computer systems) should be removed for the tax year in which this takes place.
Apologies for long post but it sets out what I need to tell HMRC later next week assuming that nothing changes.
