My evening has been good thanks.

Thanks everyone . My brother had been visiting for the weekend. I told him before he came that I was coming down with a cold but he still came on Friday afternoon. He left earlier though on Saturday morning. Too risky to stay longer and the train service at weekends is poor as a result of engineering work with journey mnore like 4 hours rather than 2.

I hope you recover quickly, El, and hope you and your brother enjoyed a nice time together in spite of your illness.

Good morning everyone

Thanks everyone Feeling a but better this morning but my voice has gone, which doesn't normally happen for me.

Summer, because of the ever worsening of the rail system, particularly at Christmas, we agreed some time ago that it would be far easier see each other in January rauther than over Christmas. It will be much the same next year and 2019 could be even worse. The major cause is Crossrail where the western section between Paddington and Reading is due to open December 2019 si that work has a direct impact on the route my brother takes.

I hope to have a nice break wherever you are going to

I hope everyone has a good day

Good morning everyone, I'm glad you're feeling a little better EL, although it must be a nuisance losing your voice.  Try to stay in the warm until you feel much better though, you know we worry about you   Such a shame that the rail system is causing such problems for your visits with your brother.

I hope the huge list gets done quickly and without any problems Summer.

Enjoy your day everyone

One of the more concerning HMRC scam phone calls reported to my accountancy institute. This is the report made with a couple of names removed by me:

β€œI had a call this afternoon from a man called H who said he was phoning from M H and that they were enforcement officers for HMRC. They said I owed a sum of money and that their bailiffs would be calling round in about half an hour to collect the sum due. The amount had only fallen due on 7 November but they said they had an enforcement writ from the court.

β€œI got very angry and was put through to a Mr B J who said he was the general manager from HMRC debt collection unit. He wanted me to make a payment there and then whereupon he would waive the 20% debt collection charge. He gave me the name of the bank account and said the usual VAT office bank account wouldn’t apply. He had no information about the other VAT returns I had made and I hung up.

β€œI phoned the VAT helpline who said that their Debt Management Unit had not taken any such action and that it was obviously a scam. Worryingly the fraudsters seemed to know my name, company name, address and the correct amount I owed the VAT office, which suggests they had managed to get some detailed information illegally. I have since spoken to an HMRC representative who seems fairly certain that my Gateway account could not have been hacked, and wondered if my email had been intercepted in some way. This does actually seem to be the more likely explanation.”

Mentioned on the BBC news today re identifying where Julius Caesar made his second attempted invasion of England in 54 BC.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-42155888

By the way, the first recorded time he said Veni Vidi Vici was some years later in 47 BC with reference to his victory elsewhere. And the letter "w" didn't exist until a long time after so the v should be pronounced w for Latin words, and the c more like a "k"
