Good morning everyone

Cloudy and breezy here.

Yogi, I hope you have a nice time today out with your friend

I have a client meeting starting at around 16.30 today. It could be a very heavy meeting. She had a student loan from the Student Loan Company which she was paying off partially throught deductions from her pay and partially through her tax return. She paid it off in full to the SLC late 2016. The way that the system works between the SLC and HMRC is very convoluted, She has overpaid the SLC over ÂĢ400 but the SLC is ignoring that. (Martin Lewis mentions the problem on his page in this week's issue of the Radio Times),

Filing the tax return may well result in her having to pay over ÂĢ1k to HMRC in January and then trying to get it back from the SLC which wouldn't be until next April at the earliest. There is a section of the HMRC which contacts the SLC for how much is supposed to be paid on the tax return. That section is totally closed off from the outside world. You cannot contact them, agents such as myself cannot contact them, and not even the self assessment section of HMRC can contact them.

The man who works in that department is kept in a dungeon far below ground in a secluded part of the country. From time to time he is thrown bits of food. As a special treat, he is thrown a doughnut.

If Charles Dickens and Franz Kafka were still alive they could write a book together about this.

I hope everyone has a good day

Squiggle, the frustrating thing is that although I've kept her fully in the picture, there's very little that I can do. When I refer to Franz Kafka, that's not joking, that's what it's like. She has made a formal complaint to the SLC as they've been ignoring her. It's been known for some time that the SLC computers and the HMRC computers are incompatible with each other. As I've mentioned before, the SLC is under investigation with the CEO and deputy being suspended. The system does not work.

A client emailed me yesterday evening re his accounts which he's still working on. I hadn't got around to replying him this morning as I was trying to finish off another client's VAT return,

Having finished the VAT return I went out to do a bit lof local shopping. Went to the till to pay and then the client who had emailed me came behind me to pay for his shopping. So that saved me having to email him back

Coincidence El?

Moonie

Back from the client and my head is still attached to my body

I'll file her tax return and then wait to see what happens over the next few months. It may not get sorted out until well into January but I'll be able to monitor the position and keep her informed.

Yogi, I'm glad you had a lovely day with your friend

Squiggle, I hope the winds on Monday aren't a problem for people - I think your area get gusts around 47 mph at the peak whereas mine is 37 mph. The Met Office warnings are yellow so at present they aren't expecting a repeat of the great storm 30 years ago tomorrow night.

Summer, I hope you like the episodes of Victoria, last week's is a lighter one than the previous week's. The final episode of this series is tomorrow. As I took an O level in Economic History many years ago I already know what will happen (if they stick to historical accuracy) but I won't say anything.

El have you read any of Queen Victoria's diaries? I heard that they're all online and that Jenna Coleman reads them

I'm looking forward to finding out how the series ends tomorrow

I'm currently working on crafting this year's Xmas cards

I hadn't read any of her diaries. There's nothing in her diaries which confirms that the events of last Sunday's episode actually happened. The closest is her entry of 18th September 1844 which you read on this page and the one after:

Good luck with your crafting
