Good afternoon Buddies

What a contrast between yesterdays weather and today's weather. Warm and sunny most of yesterday, cool and windy with a little rain so far today

Hope you are all full of life and vitality today

El, my sister had a text message purporting to be from HMRC saying she was entitled to tax refund and could they have some details.

I think I would be right in stating that HMRC would never text 'out of the blue' about a tax refund. Correct El?

Have a lovely day peeps

@Moonie , that's definitely a scam and won't be from HMRC. The scammers are trying to get your sister to give them her bank details so that rather than money going into her account it would be vanishing.
Link to HMRC page on this and there's a link for her to report the text message to them before she deletes it.

Thanks El, I thought it was a scam

Coincidentally, I have had paperwork from HMRC last week stating I am entitled to a rebate. It's looks official. The amounts of monies tax has been paid on look correct. No where on the paperwork does it show my full NI number. How is one to know if this is bogus or not. I rang a number on the paperwork which began 0300. You get though the usual 'press this number for this' kinda stuff and the first thing they ask 'can we I have you NI number please?'

Very confusing for me

Moonie

Moonie, I would have thought your NI number would have been shown and also a PAYE reference if you have any re emplotment/works pension.

The HMRC phone number for general income tax queries is 0300 200 3300. If you do a self assessment tax return each year it's 0300 200 3310. I would suggest the 3300 one.
Here's a link to a useful site (I think it was Squiggle who mentioned it). I've shown the page for the various options for the 3300 one.

They will always ask you for your NI number and may ask you for your name and/or address.

That was the number I was going to phone, so will do that

Thanks so much for your help El

A mind of useful information, as ever

Moonie

Moonie, I hope you get through to HMRC on the phone without having to wait a long time and that you can get your tax refund sorted out with them It can take quite a long time to get through so it's best to do it when you don't have to rush out. There's a different number for agents such as myself which is a lot quicker and I get through to a more senior officer but it would be pointless you trying that number as they would pick up on that straighaway because you don't have an agent registered with them.

Headline on my local news website today:

Thieves have stolen allow wheels from vehicles in a car showroom in the Forest of Dean.

At least they have spelt thieves correctly

I had to look twice at that before the big penny clanged El
