Good afternoon Summer It's been cloudy here now since late morning, No rain but some is forecast for early evening. I've just been doing some gardening while it's dry. Cut the grass and bits and pieces. There's a new occupant of the house at the back. He's replacing the fence panels there. He lives just round the corner from me and his garden (such as it is, small and wedge shaped) runs at the back of my garden and my neighbour's garden. He's removed the old ones which were falling down at my neighbour's end and will put up the new ones next week. So there's nothing there at present and I took advantage of that by getting rid of some weeds etc which were only accessible when no fence there.

Good morning it's a beautiful sunny day here (and I'm glad I'm not hungover like my friends are!)

i hope you've all got lovely weather too

El, the party was fun thank you, I had a catch up with a few people I've not seen in weeks and played quiz master in a game called Linkee. I enjoyed that

what are you all doing today?

Im getting my house ready for my guests who arrive later this afternoon and walking miss bramble

~Sparkling Summer~

Good morning everyone, fairly sunny here and I think it is supposed to be like that for most of the day.  Did anyone catch sight of the Perseid meteor showers last night?  I think it was too cloudy where I was and I'm usually asleep by the time they are at their best. What a lovely heartwarming story about those very caring hairdressers EL, thank you for sharing that.

Enjoy your day everyone

Good morning Buddies

Lovely sunny day here

Hope everyone is well

Sweet, pleased you don't have a hangover. Miss Bramble will be pleased to be able to have her walk without treading quietly

Have a lovely time with your guests

Yogi, sun at last

Sounds like you have your day sorted already

Squiggle, I hope the sunny weather stays with you all day

I had heard about the meteor showers and we had a clear night here last night but never got around to to having a look

Have a great day everyone

Moonie

Thanks Yogi, Ros and Squiggle - I found the hairdresser story heartwarming as well.

Summer, I hope you have a nice time with your guests

Squiggle and Moonie, I too didn't look out for the Perseid meteor showers though it was a relatively clear light. There's too much light pollution here to have a realistic chance of seeing them properly.

A rare doumentary on the Talking Pictures channel this afternoon called A Welcome to Britain. Made in 1943 by the War Office to inform American soldiers arriving here as to the British ways of life. It was directed by Anthony Asquith and Burgess Meredith. It also includes appearances as themselves by people such as Felix Aylmer, Bob Hope and Beatrice Lillie.

A couple of days ago I resaw "A Kid for two Farthings" (1953). Set in the London East End about the bustling life there. Young boy buys a unicorn (actually a young goat with only one horn) thinking that it will bring luck to people. It's not a fantasy as such. Directed by Carol Reed with a script by Wolf Mankowitz from his novel of the same name based on his growing up experiences within a Jewish community in the East End. The boy's mother is played by Celia Johnson but the stand out performance is David Kossof as the tailor. The kid in the title isn't actually bought for two farhings but is a reference to the Passover song Chad Gadya - the first line being "One little goat which my father bought for two zuzim (which were little coins)". At the end of the film, the David Kossof character sings fragments from that song.

Over lunch today I watched the short film I mentioned the other day "The Bespoke Overcoat". Exceptionally good with outstanding acting from David Kossof as a Jewish taylor (not the same one as above) and Alfie Bass. Although it's a ghost story, it's got nothing to do with hauntings,  spooky goings on, and isn't intended to be remotely scary. Directed by Jack Clayton, the script is by Wolf Mankovitz from his play adapted by a short story by Gogol. At the end of the film, the David Kossof character recites a Jewish prayer. It's on again early Wednesday morning on the Talking Pictures channel.

It's a coincidence that I saw the two films within a few days of each other. They are very different but there are some similarities particularly the very final scene.
