Thanks Yogi, I've dropped my brother off at the station just now. He checked that there were no known problems for the journey so hopefully he should get home without any major problems.

I hope you have a good day with the tiddlers tomorrow

Squiggle, it's been sunny here for much of the day We've finished the adventure game "Anna's Quest". Apart from what we thought was a somewhat abrupt ending, it's an exceptionally good adventure game,

glad you had  a lovely time with your brother

Squiggle, it looks as if your village is under siege from those roadworks to 8 May

It was hilarious EL, the road I wanted to take was closed, so I waited patiently for the clogged traffic to clear on the other route.  When coming back into the village I avoided the lower road knowing it was blocked only to find out when I got to the centre of the village that that was was blocked as well.  I spoke to the guy and he said would it be possible for me to do a loop and come up the other way (the blocked way ) so I did and had to drive past the road blocked sign to get home.  I've got to go to the dentists on Wednesday, heaven knows which road will be open by then.

squiggle

Squiggle, I thought the roadworks in your area were as you described which us why I described it as a siege You may need to arrange for a helicopter to get you to the dentist on Wednesday

You might want to look at the interactive map for your county at the roadworks in your village. Just google your county with roadworks and you'll find it - https county.roadworks.org

Good morning everyone

Sunny here at present but heavy showers forecast this afternoon.

Summer, I'm glad you had a fantastic walk, a bit over a marathon I hope you've been able to get some sleep. Thanks re my weekend with my brother - he did get back home without any problems

I have two courses to go to today, accounting update this morning and tax update this afternoon. So I won't be around here most of today.

I hope everyone has a good day

El Loro

Good luck with your courses El, I hope you have a good day

good morning all I'm spending my days shattered, then coming wide awake at bed time, I'm hoping that one of these days I'll fall asleep early and reset my usually fabulous sleeping cycle

what are you all doing today? I've got the day off and am going to go help my friend with some jobs, she's starting to feel a little better each day but is still limited as to what she's allowed to do

~Sparkling Summer~

i'm back from the first course (the shorter of the two). Straightforward one with no nasty surprises in the world of accounting standards. Before the course I had found out that the lecturer this morning is also doing the most important course for many years here in a month's time. The making tax digital one. So at the break I went up to her with a couple of posers for her to consider for when she gives the course next month. They are of the type which all accountants will be faced with. Although the questions are simple enough, she didn't have a ready answer to give and wasn't certain if there was any official guidance.

Question 1. A partnership for a business has to file a tax return besides the individual partners. Using the lower intended turnover threshold, a partneship with a turnover say of ÂĢ19,000 exceeds ÂĢ10k (the threshold) so will have to comply. But a husband and wife who let a couple of properties for instance don't file a parnership return, just their own. So if they let a couple of properties and get a gross rent of ÂĢ19k do they have to comply?

Question 2. The earlier trigger threshold is ÂĢ83k (VAT registration level). So a partnership with a turnover of ÂĢ90k will have to comply from the earlier date. But suppose that the main partner takes 90% and the other partner 10%. That partner's share is under ÂĢ10k - will they be required to comply?

Summer, I'm glad your friend is on the road to recovery

It's not nice when your circadian rhythm is disturbed. You could make sure that your bedroom is as dark as possible. Also have your last meal say at least 3 hours before going to bed.

Squiggle, the weather here is much the same as yours and there is the risk of hefty showers when I leave the afternoon's course.

El Loro

thanks Ros sweet dreams

well done on your courses

moonie I'm pleased things are progressing and I hope you're not too cold or draughty while they work

squiggle, so true, I think her confidence has been shaken, but I know she'll fight that off with a vengeance

yogi i hope you've had a brilliant couple of days with the little ones

sweet dreams all

Good morning everyone.

Weather is bright and sunny but very cold.

Squiggle, I hope the upheaval with your roads doesn't last too long.

El, I hope your courses were useful to you.

Summer, I'm glad you enjoyed your long walk. Well done on completing it.

Moonie, I hope your gas fire is back on today.

Ros, are you back to work now, after the Easter holidays?

Velvet and Joe, I hope things are okay with you.

I had a lovely two days with the children (but tiring). They left late last night and after I had tidied up, I had a bath and went straight to bed.

GP has requested another blood test, as my last one wasn't at the level she wanted. I'm off to get it done this morning.

Have a good day everyone.

Good morning everyone, beautiful morning but so cold.  I must have slept with my arm outside the duvet because the cold got into my arthritic shoulder and it's very stiff and painful this morning.

Well done on getting through those courses EL and I hope the next one is interesting and useful.  Did I see a headline this morning saying the Government is re-thinking the extra tax returns for businesses?

I'm glad you had such a lovely time with the grandkids Yogi and I hope this blood test result is acceptable to your doctor.

Enjoy your day everyone

Scientists have been looking into the most effective way of throwing things accurately, for instance it's best to throw a crumpled up piece of paper into a bin by throwing it underarm slowly.

I wonder if they'll be contenders for this year's Ig Nobel prize for physics. Ig Nobel prizes are awarded for research which has been carried out on unusual or odd areas of science.

Squiggle, there's an item in the Telegraph about making tax digital reforms on hold and hinting that they might be dropped due to the effect on businesses.

What has happened is that the finance bill had to be rushed through parliament before it ends later this week because of the election. That was done yesterday. In order to do that many of the clauses in the bill had to be dropped (including the tax digital ones) leaving just the clauses which had to be passed to make thinsg like tax rates and allowances for the current year final.

If the Condervatives win the election they will introduce a new Finance Bill very quickly which will re-introduce the clauses which were dropped.

The lecturer at the course yesterday afternoon has been heavily involved with the tax digial process and his discussions with conservative MPs who are involed with this make it clear that digital tax is going to go ahead as planned with zero compromises. There won't be any delays in implementation.

The  HMRC policy paper on MTD for businesses which was published on 8 Match (budget day):
https://www.gov.uk/government/...digital-for-business

It says that there is not expected to be any significant macroeconomic impacts as a result of the changes. Trouble is macroeconomic (which is the country as a whole) is very different to microeconomic which is on an individual.

There are things in that document which I find offensive. The assertion that taxpayers who use agents (such as myself) are just as likely to be underpaying tax at present as if they did it themselves.

Their calculations of what tax is being underpaid is based on random enquity programmes HMRC has carried out on tax returns. What it doesn't say is that although any self assessment return can be looked into on a random basis, HMRC will normally only open an enquiry if they think something doesn't look right or if the business is one where there's a greater chance of tax being underpaid.

Oh, and the document says that the objective is "to take out around 10% of error on an ongoing basis".

So they are happy to cause massive upheavals for businesses and landlords to reduce errors by 10%.

Some brightness here, showers forecast for later.

Happy 8th birthday Gagarians

Squiggle, I hope your shoulder is better this morning

Yogi, good luck with your shopping and clearing that cupboard. If you find that there's snow under foot and a bright light ahead, you'll know you've gone too far

I hope everyone has a good day
