I saw a few minutes of a programme yesterday where they said it was illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas Day. That's incorrect though in 1644 Christmas Day fell on a legally mandated day of fasting so was in that year. Also Christmas celebrations were prohibited from 1647 to 1659 thanks to Oliver Cromwell.

A list of legal odditiies such as that saying which if they are true or not was made by the Law Commission in 2013:

Afternoon all.

Weather is very cold with rain and sleet.

El, could please send me some of your sunshine?

Squiggle, I hope your Christmas Day goes well tomorrow.

Joe, I hope the weather brightens up and your grandson enjoys the Winter Wonderland.

Summer, did you enjoy your snooze?

I still have some wrapping to do. I like to do some on Christmas Eve while I watch It's A Wonderful Life.

Have a good day everyone.

Evening all we had a beautiful blue sky day here too, I did see it briefly at lunch. We've had our busiest Thursday ever, and I know tomorrow will be worse. I ended up childminding for a couple of hours this evening too, which was fun and a welcome distraction

i hope you've each had a good day and sleep well tonight

squiggle, I hope you all have a wonderful meal merry Christmas!

Good morning everyone

Cloudy here, some rain in the afternoon, and forecast to be windy (gusts around 45 mph).

I hope Storm Barbara doesn't cause damage or problems for those up North

It's a Wonderful Life is on Channel 4 on Christmas Day at 2.20 pm. Christmas Day afternoon television is exceptionally strong this year with the films being shown such as Frozen, The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, The Lion King and The Artist.

I hope everyone has a good day

*night owls* good evening gang, I hope you've all had a good day, especially you Squiggle

mines been another busy one, but we've had a friend come in to be our assistant and that took the pressure off enormously

el, you are so right about this year's Xmas day films, I think it's a fantastic line up! i'll be watching/recording several of them. There's just one you left out though.. Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets! I've set all of them to record

i can't believe that tomorrow is Christmas Eve!!!!!

Good morning everyone

Quite cloudy here.

A very Happy Birthday to Velvet today

GJ, I hope your journeys go well

I hope everyone has a good day

The Alastair Sim version of Scrooge is being shown twice today on Channel 5. I think that the earlier one is the original black and white version and the late one is the colourised version. I prefer the original but that's just a personal preference.

Good morning everyone, still a bit blustery but we were very lucky with the weather yesterday and the heavy rain came while we were sitting down to our meal, which is always beautiful to watch here.  My youngest grandson brought his girlfriend and her 8 year old son who was fascinated with the house and garden, and amazed that he could walk right round the house in the garden.  They explored every inch of the garden and he wants to come back and build dens and climb trees.

I hope your Christmas preparations are all going along tickety boo and you are all looking forward to the big day.  EL did your brother arrive safely?  Velvet I hope your birthday is special, with your family around you Summer I am glad that your day was busy yet enjoyable and you had a friend to help spread the load.  Yogi I bet you have two excited little ones to enjoy over the weekend.

My daughter has been a real star and we are both totally exhausted and she just kept going and going.  Just a little bit of clearing up to do and back to normal, although she is going through it all again tomorrow cooking a joint of beef.

Enjoy your day everyone

squiggle

Squiggle, I'm glad you had a great day yesterday with your family

I had to put off my brother's visit over a week ago. I've had a recurring bug, which  is a bit like a cold but isn't for the last couple of months. I get it for a few days, then it goes away for a week or so, then it comes back. Other people in my area have had it as well. Because of the engineering work on the railways over Christmas, if my brother had come, he wouldn't be able to get back if I started coming down with the bug. So the intention is that he's come for a weekend break possibly in 2 weeks time when the trains are running to a more normal timetable. I'm fine at present though.

This from Katie Melua and the Gori Women's Choir has been on TV over the last few days.

The song is called Shchedryk which is Ukrainian for Bountiful Evening. It tells of a swallow which flies into a household to sing of prosperity to come in the spring. It was written by Mykota Leontovych in 1916. The music was later used for the popular Carol of the Bells which had different words. The Katie Melua version is the original Ukrainian song.

In English it's:
hchedryk, shchedryk, a shchedrivka (= New Year);
A little swallow flew [into the household]
and started to twitter,
to summon the master:
"Come out, come out, O master [of the household],
look at the sheep pen,
there the ewes have stumbled
and the lambkins have been born
Your goods [livestock] are great,
you will have a lot of money, [by selling them]

if not money, then chaff: [from all the grain you will harvest]
you have a dark-eyebrowed [beautiful] wife."
Shchedryk, shchedryk, a shchedrivka,
A little swallow flew.
