The very sad news of a 3 year old boy being killed by a dog near his home reminded me of something from many years ago when I was a child. I must have been about 8 and was walking down a road about quarter of a mile away from where I lived. Suddenly a largish (in my eyes) dog jumped over a wall and made for me viciously barking. I had just been walking and wasn't doing anything which could possibly have provoked it. I wasn't big so did the only thing I could do which was to run as fast as I could. The dog gave chase barking and running trying to catch me. I was able to get to my house. There was a brick wall and gate at the front and I was able to shut the gate before the dog caught me. I then went in unscathed.

I hadn't heard about the 3 year old being killed by the dog.

I know the loving relationship a well trained dog can have with a child, so these stories make me very sad.

Sounds like you had a very lucky escape, El.

Late afternoon troops

Hope all are well. Bit of a rough night with four paws who started being sick about half one and was then all out of sorts till after six. Crying, mumping, shaking, round the back in a daze for half the night        Hasn't moved all day - hopefully with exhaustion.

Nice to see the ladies maintaining the Buddies presentational standards. At least Yogi would have saved on the wash today as it has been horrific

Regarding the poor three year old who met a truly horrific end I will always maintain that certain dog owners - and I use that term specifically - never realize that there's a first time, no matter how cute they think they are. There's always a first time and it's happening far too often. Those strong jawed dogs are a real danger no matter what gloss - or "training" - the owners put on them. I couldn't ever own one.

As far as Harriet Walter goes - I've fancied her since the late 80's

Have a good weekend ye all and treat yourselves

Hi Velvet.

I hope poor Dolly feels better soon.

I hear what you're saying about strong jawed dogs.

I remember Cezar Milan explaining that it's the way their jaw latches on and clamps down which causes such terrible damage. I do think the main problem is with the idiots who tend to own these dogs, rather than the breeds themselves, but like you, I'd never own one.

I carefully introduced Keira to PB and BB and love how she is with them, especially as she didn't grow up with young children, but I'd never be complacent and always keep a close eye on them. My son and DiL did the same with their lab, Harvey - and he's a big softy who wouldn't hurt a fly. You ought to see PB with the dogs - she is the alpha - they love her.

Choose your breed wisely, train them well and love them lots then you'll have a loyal friend for life.

Velvet, Quatermass was certainly better than that Behemoth film. Another really good "horror" film was Night of the Demon (1957), again originally X, now PG. It was a UK/American film made in the UK with mainly UK actors but had Dana Andrews in the lead. It was directed by Jacques Tourneur who was regarded as the best American director of horror films in the early 1940s. If you've never seen it, that one is worth look out for.

Good morning everyone

As forecast, rather windy plus showers here today.

Velvet, The Night of the Demon film is unrelated to The Night of the Demons (1988) which did have sequels and a remake. Tho 1957 film is based on M R James's "Casting the runes". In the States, an edited shortened version was released as "Curse of the Demon" but the version of "Curse of the Demon" nowadays on DVDs is the full length "Night of the Demon".

I hope everyone has a good day and don't get swept away

Good morning everyone, we've got a real mix of weather, mostly horrible weather, very windy, lots of showers, we've got a bit of blue sky at the moment but that won't last.

What are you going to do with your very rare day to yourself Yogi?  I hope everyone else has Yogi's sunshine rather than my horrible weather.

Enjoy your day everyone

Good morning the sun has put his hat on and cleared away all our rain! Although I can hear a noise needs investigating, it could be a dripping in my loft but I'm really not sure. Inspector Sweet is on the case!

meanwhile, I hope you've all slept well and are going to have a lovely day what are your plans?

Squiggle, how are you feeling now?

Yogi, how is your mouth?

And moonie, we all hope you are alright. come back soon

~Sparkling Summer~

Good morning everyone

Better weather here than yesterday though the forecast is for heavy showers/rain this evening.

Summer, I hope the dripping sound is something like rain collected in gutters and slowly dripping away through moss having got there rather than a leak in the roof

I hope everyone has a good day

Yogi, I hope you've got through that paperwork and shredding to be able to go something more exciting

My church is twinned with a parish in Sweden. Sometimes a group of them visit us including today. They tend to sing a couple of hymns or songs today in Swedish. The highlight today was their version of the well known Leonard Cohen song Allelulia covered by many. The chorus of course remains unchanged.

Nothing very exciting, El.

Sounds like a very pleasant visit from the Swedish parishoners.
