Back in Shakespeare's time, women were banned from acting on stage in this country with females being played by men or boys (as in Shakespeare in Love). That changed a long time ago and it's not that unusual for women to play the male character. Sarah Bernardt may have been the first with her Hamlet back in 1890 though that was in Paris. A very very brief film of her in the fatal duel sequence was made in 1900:

So Maxine Peake was certainly not the first female Hamlet.

And in other Shakespeare plays, Helen Mirren was Prospera in a film version of The Tempest. On stage Phillida Law is producing all women versions of Henry IV (Harriet Walter in the lead), Julius Caesar and The Tempest this autumn. And then there's the return to stage after many years in politics is Glenda Jackson as King Lear.

El Loro

Afternoon all, just a flying visit.

I see we are all fans of external hard drives. Tbh, the only thing I worry about losing is my photographs. As long as I know they are safe, I'm quite happy.

Summer, I wonder if Bramble is finding it too warm for a walk at lunchtime?

Good luck on losing a few pounds for your holiday. I'm still being good and the weight is coming off, slow but sure.

My youngest is coming later on this week. I'm not in a great hurry for the laptop as I can use my ipad for now.

I hope you've all had a good day.

Good late afternoo/early evening everyone

We never actually got the promised rain so it's just been over caste. Still quite pleasant though

Sweet, Bramble may just be plum tuckered out out after yesterday's mini hike

El, I think Toyah Willcox played in a version of the Tempest too

Yogi,  I hope your youngest sorts your puter out when he comes later in the week

Btw, I have stuff backed up on an external hard drive too

Have a great evening everyone

Cornflakes in warm milk tonight Sweet. It's gone quite cool here in the last few hours

That takes me back, Moonie. My mum used to give us cornflakes in warm milk in the winter.

Good morning everyone

Very cloudy here and some light rain possible at any time. Quite wet overnight.

I have never liked the taste of warm milk so can't stand it over cereal, has to be cold for me. My father loved warm milk and my mother didn't like milk at all other than a bit in tea or coffee.

Summer, I don't think the Great North Snowdogs trail has been announced yet. This seems to be a good site to find info:

I hope everyone has a good day

El Loro

Good morning everyone.

Weather is dry with some blue sky.

El, I couldn't drink a glass of warm milk, I only ever had hot milk on my cornflakes as a child.

I was in Paisley recently and they had lots of colourful lions all over the place. I have no idea why they were there but they certainly brightened things up.

Edit: I found a link http://www.paisley.org.uk/2016...ted-roaring-success/

Have a good day everyone.

Good morning everyone

It's been raining here since yesterday evening. No heavy but persistent. My gardens are happy even if I'm not

I guess warm milk on cereals is an acquired taste then folks

El , I hope your day brightens up
