Summer, the question of the greatest film is very subjective as people have very differing views.
IMDB reviewers place The Shawshank Redemption as the number one film closely followed by The Godfather. GWTW appears at 155th place

The BFI (British Film Institute) polls critics, distibutors, film academics etc (so not the general public). For many years Citizen Kane was the number one film but in the most recent poll that was ousted by Vertigo.

El Loro

It's an interesting set of views isn't it El, how about we each compile our own list of top 5 movies?

I'll think about mine while I'm walking Bramble

I'm looking forward to both of those dramas starting next Sunday

i stopped watched Indian Summers after the first episode of this new series. I didn't like where the storylines had gone after the end of the last series

~Sparkling Summer~

My list of 5 top movies would include in no particular order:
Sunrise (1927) the best silent film ever made. (5th on that BFI list)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928). Although also silent, a strong candidate for the greatest acting performance of all time. (9th on BFI)
2001 (1968) mainly because that was the film that started me being interested in films. (6th on BFI)
Singin' in the Rain (1952) as being wonderful on many levels. (20th on BFI)
Cinema Paradiso (1988) with a caveat in that I watched it on DVD as the second of my own double bill of Italian films. The first was Miracle in Milan. The combined effect of both films made the final scene of Cinema Paradiso beyond wonderful for me. (not on the BFI list but 56th on IMDB)

An honourable mention goes to A Canterbury Tale (1944) the Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger film as being my favourite film though not a great film.

El Loro

Afternoon all the sun has come out and I wasn't expecting it

I'm watching The Railway Children. Another classic, and one that I have not yet watched. I'll leave my review later

im glad you didn't put your top 5 films in a particular order El, because I would have trouble ordering mine. Here's my list;

The Sound of Music

It's a Wonderful Life

Catch me if you can

White Christmas

Walk the Line

~Sparkling Summer~

So interesting seeing your top 5 films EL and Summer, it must he hard to whittle it down to just 5.  It is a glorious afternoon here now, hope it is where you are too.

I came across this lovely story and just had to share it

It was a very hot day in July 1951. I was in Tel-Aviv and too hot to walk. I boarded Dan bus #4 on the corner of Ben-Yehuda and Gordon streets.

The bus was very crowded and there was no available seat. I had to stand next to a Yemenite woman holding a live chicken under her apron.

People were chatting, discussing with fervor the day’s news, each one offering a personal description of the political situation, everyone with a different opinion. As is common in Israel, every person holds himself to be the authentic source of “inside” information. This one said “I have a cousin in the police force and he told meâ€Ķâ€Ķ..”. Another replied, “that doesn’t make any sense. My neighbor’s son is in the army and he was telling usâ€Ķâ€Ķ”. And from the rear of the bus, a passenger shouted “who cares? Nothing will change soon”.

At each bus stop some passengers alighted and new passengers boarded. Now there were a few empty seats and I grabbed one in the middle of the bus.

As we approached another bus stop (I can’t remember which corner), three or four new passengers boarded. One elderly lady stepped up to the coin box next to the driver and deposited a few coins.

Suddenly, looking at the bus driver she gave a loud shriek. “Moishele, Moishele, Moishele mein kind”.

The driver jammed on the brakes, looked at the elderly woman and cried, “Mama, Mama, is it you Mama?”

Both were Holocaust survivors from Poland and each one thought the other one was dead.

Jumping up from his seat, the driver embraced his long-lost and presumed dead mother and both hugged and hugged and both wept bitter tears of joy.

All the passengers clapped hands. Several were weeping from the joy of seeing mother and son re-united. One passenger jumped off the bus and hailed the next approaching bus. He shared the news with the new driver and requested him to notify the Dan bus company to send a relief driver.

None of us left the bus. A relief driver appeared about half-hour later. Passengers sitting in the row behind the driver got up and gave the seats to the mother and son, still clutching one another and weeping with heart-wrenching sobs.

At some point, our original driver and his mother left the bus while all of us clapped hands and the Yiddish-speaking passengers shouted “ Mazal tov. Mazal tov. Tzu gezunt. A sach nachas”.

I never knew where they were going. Probably to the driver’s home so his mother could meet his wife and her new grandchild.

All of us were so filled with emotion that it was difficult to contain ourselves. There was not a dry eye among our passengers.

It was a hot July day in 1951. But I will never forget the miracle on Dan bus #4 on that very happy day.

Evening all.

I had a lovely time catching up with my friend.

When I arrived home, the whole family (apart from my poor middle DiL who had to work) was there.

Squiggle, that story made me fill up.

It's A Wonderful Life would definitely be in my Top 5 Films, I love it and have it on dvd. It's my Christmas Eve film.

The Railway Children was my youngest son's favourite book for ages. I had to read it to him over and over again, until he was old enough to read it by himself. I love the film and have it on dvd, and I always cry at the end.

I didn't know how it ended, so that moment was very special, and as a one time daddy's girl myself, I was delighted for Bobby

yogi I'm pleased you've had a lovely day, your poor DIL having to work though I hope she had a tasty Easter egg waiting at home for her tonight

I hope she had too.

That'll be nice, I hope your parents are both well ooh roll on Thursday then! How is our little princess? Is she enjoying her new role?

no big plans here, back to work in the morning and a walk & a cuppa planned with friends on Wednesday. I have to get bramble's quarterly check up booked in too, she's due her wormer & flea treatments. I hope the vet notices my new claw trimming skills

~Sparkling Summer~

Lol aw bless her. She sounds very independent and knows her own mind

bramble will be fine until she has to go into the treatment room, then she'll hide her head in my tummy. She won't like the vet examining her, but she'll let them do it anyway, and she will love the treat she gets afterwards

speaking of her ladyship, she's been up on my bed for the last 2 hours!

Good morning everyone, lots of blue sky here which is lovely but I think it might be cold - I haven't ventured out.

What a lovely surprise Yogi and PB to look forward to on Thursday.  Will you have them both for a sleepover?  I am glad you loved the Railway Children Summer, definitely would make my top 10 films.  You have had two wonderful films to watch over the long weekend and lucky you seeing them both for the first time

Enjoy your day everyone
