Good morning everyone

Very cloudy here, quite windy, forecast to get brighter later.

I've a client to see this morning to get signatures on their tax returns (husband and wife). Will need to warn them of proposed changes in the way tax is administered in this country - the changes are such that if the changes were to come in they may decide that it's nor worth doing and give up, either relying on state beneifts or leave the country (and I'm not joking).

There's the change where all self employed people and companies will have to digitally file accounts data with HMRC at least 4 times a year and also those people who have untaxed income such as landlords unless it's under ÂĢ10k and thay are also employed or pensioners. That makes it a requirement for all such people to be both computer and accounting literate or to incur significant extra costs in getting it done for them.

Then for landlords who let property, instead of paying capital gains tax based on what goes in their tax returns when a let property is sold, and so paying the tax in the Janaury after the end of the tax year, they will have to pay the tax withing 30 days of selling the property. Not only does that mean that the tax will have to be paid anything up to 21 months earlier than at present but there's another problem. The rate of CGT depends on what level of overall income you have so that higher rate tax payers have a higher rate. So if someone sells a property in say May, the CGT would be payable in June and they will have to know what their income is for the tax year to see what tax band they come into. It will become essential for all such taxpayers to have access to a time machine so that they can go into the future to find out to get the correct information.

That doesn't sound like good news for them.

Are these changes definitely going to come in, El?

Good morning everyone.

It's raining again.

Yogi, they are proposals at this stage and due to go out for consultation. It is thought that they will go out for consulation in January with the intention that as most accountants will be so snowed under with last minute tax returns they won't spot the consultations until it is too late and the proposals then go through unchallenged. I think accountancy institutes are expressing concerns about this. The problem is that if these go through, the effect on the economy will be that it shrinks and so is ultimately these are stupid proposals.

Good morning everyone, a lovely morning for a change, I hope that it's widespread and perhaps the flood waters in affected areas will disperse quickly.

That sounds unbelievably potty EL but not beyond belief.  We really do seem to have 'gone down the rabbit hole' and understanding what is happening in this country seems impossible.  I just switched on the TV to check my recordings from last night had been successful, and found myself watching a snatch of a programme where some poor guy was using a food bank after not eating for 8 days he then went on to mention that he was hoping to get a benefit payment this Friday after being sanctioned for 4 months.  What sort of country do we live in now where they can blithely withhold money from someone and leave them to starve?  I know they can sanction people at the drop of a hat. I rarely talk politics nowadays but sometimes you just have to express your outrage.

I am glad you had a lovely visit from PB Yogi.  My friend and I - the loveliest lady you could ever hope to meet - watched a new DVD I have bought God of Wonder which I believe nobody could sit through and not believe at the end that there is indeed a God.  She asked me to order her 2 copies.  For Christmas I bought her a beautifully decorated box and filled it with greetings cards for her to send to people as she spends all her time reaching out to people, maybe going through difficult times, and it is becoming increasingly difficult on the high street to find those cards which really touch the heart.  She is thrilled with her gift, and another reason for my gift is that she then has a marvellous stock of cards ready to send and doesn't need to have to go out looking.  She is in her late 80's and not as mobile as she once was.

Terrible results on both Strictly and Celebrity Jungle sad to say.

Enjoy your day everyone

squiggle

Good morning sorry I didn't manage to get back on last night. I'm hoping everything will calm down now that my Christmas work party, the city's Christmas fair and this weekend's strictly results have all been talked about!

I bought a hat from the Christmas fair, all are knitted by volunteers and donated to the stand and all money goes to Walking with the Wounded. A very worthy cause IMO

squiggle, I completely agree with you about that poor chap going hungry, it's just not right. My own money is tighter these days with my change of living circumstances, but I still try to pop something in the local food banks because there's always a buy one get one free offer we can take advantage of.

~Sparkling Summer~

Squiggle, is that DVD this one called "God of Wonders"? https://www.gagajoyjoy.com/topi...0#468412848447639250

Back from that client - response was "this government doesn't live in the real world". It's a sad reflection that people find themselves having to rely on foodbanks. As you know my church is a strong supporter of the local foodbank and I continue to give food for that on a regular basis.

Well done Summer on supporting Walking with the Wounded

Don;t watch wither Striclty or Celebrity Jungle so can't comment on the results. Looking up the results, never heard of the Jungle winner. Obviously I've heard of and recognise the person who left Strictly but not watching it, no idea as to the quality of the dancing.

Afternoon all.

I've been to visit my best friend,  her daughter and 8week old grandaughter - who is completely gorgeous.

Summer and Squiggle, last night was the night for disappointing results in reality shows.

I agree about the pics of Princess Charlotte, what a lovely baby.

Last night, I was talking to hubby about our local food bank. Every now and then, our nearest Tesco do a collection of food for the local food bank, then Tesco double whatever is donated. I was wondering if they would do another collection before Christmas as we usually donate to it.

Yogi, I'm glad you had a nice visit

Tesco did have a food bank collection for Christmas but unfortunately you've missed it as they ran it on the 3rd to the 5th. It's possible your local Tesco's might still take gifts but you would need to be very quick to have any chance.  You could give food direct to a food bank - Trussell Trust's search map is the place to start: http://www.trusselltrust.org/map or money http://www.trusselltrust.org/donate
