How has your day gone Yogi?

Weather has been dire here and more overnight too

Weather wasn't great, we had rain from noon onwards.

My day was okay though, and not too busy.

How was your day?

Moonie

Good morning everyone, quite windy here with great towering banks of grey and white clouds all blowing slowly in from the sea.  The wind is making it a little colder and has blown down loads of stuff from the big conifers all over the driveway I swept just a few days ago.

I hope all goes well with that huge job EL, do you work on it exclusively once you have the files?

Good luck with the housework and ironing Yogi, it's so nice once it's all done.

Enjoy your day everyone

squiggle

Thanks squiggle. Although I will be spending much of my time on the huge job I do have other clients to deal with. They are generally very small ones. I did some of the slightly larger ones over the last couple of months so that I wouldn't be dealing with those at the same time as the huge one. There are a couple which I will need to do over the next month or so but I'll fit them in when I can.

On the huge client I was given a pen drive with the accounting data on (nearly 1 gig of data ). Due to the strange accounting system they use, I have to use my old computer to access the data. I then create various spreadsheets and pdf reports and transfer them on to my newer computer to work on and to print out where necessary. I do that as I don't want to use the old computer more than I have to as it's old and slow in comparison. Also it was set up for the old printer which broke and I no longer use it for internet use (Windows XP no longer supported and lapsed antiviral s/w). That's why I create pdf files for the reports.

2014/15 data installed - √

Accounts program working - √

Trial balance balances and pdf report created - √

Nominal ledger spreadsheet files created, one for balance sheet accounts, one for profit and loss accounts - √

Above report and spreasheet files copied over to newer computer and checked working properly - √

That is the simple part and doesn't take long but was the first thing I did to ensure that it was working. The rest will take considerably longer (and I'm not going to start listing all the work I do)

Afternoon all.

Weather is still sunny, if a little chilly.

Squiggle, it's very satisfying when the housework and ironing are all done.

El, I only got three of those jingles - Granada, LWT and Anglia.

Moonie, thanks for the sympathy.

Skylark, good to see you here and glad all is well.

Summer, what is your Christmas card theme this year?

4 phone calls in last week with recorded message about claiming back bank charges (I mentioned it a few days ago). Now found out that there are 2 companies whose phone numbers are in different places in South Wales but have the same address in Swansea. Also discovered that there is a common director, also a shareholder, in the two companies. The only options on the call are 5 to speak to an advisor and 9 if I've already made a claim with no option to be removed from their database. I am of course registered with TPS.

I've therefore sent a report to the Information Commissioner with the information I have found in case they decide to do something about it. The companies seem to be in breach of the data protection law as they clearly have shared a database rather than ringing randomly and where did they get the database, and of course it's a breach of TPS. Looking at the likes of whocallsme I see that others have had similar calls recently and have made reports to the Information Commissioner. So may be the ICO will do something about it.

I have to have profesional indmnity insurance and was contacted at the end of last year by a company in Bristol. As I had already renewed the insurance I wasn't interested even though they were cheaper. They've just sent me an email ahead of my renewal date for the next year offering premiums which could be a lot less than what I pay.

Sounds good doesn't it.

But as I'm a chartered accountant I have to insure with companies which are on the ICAEW's list of approved participating insurers. So I've just had a look at the list only to find that there's no mention of the company which contacted ne.

So I'm not switching to them. I have to complete a return to ICAEW every year and one of the questions is to give the name and address of the insurer.

Any chartered accountant who has switched to them without checking is likely to find themselves in very serious trouble with the ICAEW.
