Nearly there with the injections Yogi, be nice to have it all over and done with.

I too had never seen a woodpecker until we moved down here.  We see two types, both very different in their habits.  The black and white one with the red head (great spotted) comes to the bird feeder during the winter months when I put food out.  The green one can come anytime and seems to like my lawn very much which is good news for me as it's right by where I sit.  One of the huge benefits of this house is the almost constant flow of wildlife which is why it was perfect for us after my hubby's stroke - my daughter always says that from our house is the only place the rain looks pretty.  My hubby used to love to watch the birds fly when the wind is high - being blown sideways.

Enjoy your day everyone

Where you live sounds like my idea of heaven.

Do you fancy taking in a lodger?

It's still dry here atm, so I'm hoping to do a bit of work in the front garden.

Good afternoon it's been a fair start to the day here but raining now. I've got a couple of doggy guests staying with me overnight so miss Bramble is enjoying that. Yogi and I could have a dog sitting service couldn't we

Great timing on your gardening El

Thank you, I do feel better today, a hot bath and early night have done me the world of good.

I've seen a woodpecker before, it was in the woods as I was walking Bramble- I seem to recall that it was green

This article was posted on my local news website today. I know where Bamfurlong is as it's between Gloucester and Cheltenham near the airport.

Horticulturist Chris Evans has created his own fantasy story with a memorial to a fictional farmer created by JRR Tolkien.

The 61-year old has made a sculpted arch in memory Farmer Maggot, who helped the Hobbits escape their enemies in the early chapters of the fantasy novel.

According to the Hobbit, farmer Maggot lived at Bamfurlong Farm in a very boggy region of the famous Shire.

A young Frodo Baggins used to steal mushrooms from Maggot's farm until he was eventually caught and beaten.

But years later Farmer Maggot warns Frodo, Sam, and Pippin that an ominous black rider is looking for them and gives them a lift to Bucklebury Ferry so they can escape the Shire to Buckland.

"Farmer Maggot only has a small part in the books but he is a major character because he makes the story blossom by helping the Hobbits escape," said Mr Evans, of Dundry Nurseries, off Bamfurlong Lane.

"Like a lot of teenage boys I read the book when I was about 15 and I've never forgotten the mention of Bamfurlong. As far as I know this is the only rural place in the country named Bamfurlong and, like the book, the area is low lying and wet.

"The surrounding fields are known as the mushroom fields and all the people living in the area next to us belong to the Buckland family who have been here for generations. It seems inevitable that Tolkien came here at some point."

The Birmingham based author is known to have stayed in the Malvern Hills and Lydney in the Forest of Dean. Some believe he used Puzzlewood near Coleford as inspiration for Middle Earth.

There is no proof Tolkien visited the area but locals believe the names and landscape are too much of a coincidence not to be based on fact. Tolkien only said that the name "Maggot" was a Hobbitish name whose meaning has been lost in history.

He also changed the story several times before giving the farmer three dogs, Grip, Fang, and Wolf, that the Hobbits were terrified of.

"He's a fictional character but I thought it would be good to create a memorial," said Mr Evans. "We have also made a film about the connection which we will put on YouTube as soon as it is ready."

I'm glad you're feeling a bit better.

If we win the lottery, we'll set up a dog rescue/dog sitting business.

Harv is fantastic for lying on your feet in winter and keeping them cosy.

Yes, he seems to like it a lot. I bet when I come down in the morning, he and Keira will have swapped beds - they often do!

Haha, are they drooling yet?

Yes I am, back to it Thursday's are always my least favourite day of the week too, they seem so far away from my next lay in

He has shorter walks than Keira and at a slower pace because of the arthritis, but Keira won't mind that for a day or two.

Good morning everyone, poor Winnie the Pooh, abandoned!  And how on earth did Mother Duck think those poor ducklings could follow her down that bank, you have to be very brave to be a duckling

Not a bad morning although still chilly.

Sounds like doggie heaven at yours Summer, and I bet Keira is over the moon to have her friend Harvey back again for a sleepover.

Hope all goes well with the shopping and banking Yogi.  There was a sad story on our local news about shutting banks down in the South West.  Dulverton which is a largeish town on Exmoor is being left without any bank at all after their 3 all closed down.  There was talk about it being a 30 mile round trip to the nearest one and how people without cars manage I do not know as there are no buses that make that journey.  How on earth are people supposed to manage.  I thought the guy who was leading the campaign against closure had a great idea, one bank with separate desks for each bank to keep costs down.

Enjoy your day everyone

Yogi, good luck with your housework and grocery shopping You know what moonie would be saying now if he sees that you're going shopping

He'd be asking if I intended buying some cakes.

I'll get some cakes and see if I can tempt him back to us.

Sadly, a lot of the smaller, rural branches of banks seem to be closing.

Off to Morrisons.

Yogi19

Squiggle, it's sad that places like Dulverton are being left without a bank. I thought I saw something recently about one of the banks having a van which went to small communities offering some banking services? And there is the Post Office bank though of course that's dependent on there being a post office in the town. In the States they do have community banks set up for local communities and businesses such as farmers but that would be much harder here because of the banking regulations. Some of the credit unions in this country do offer current accounts but accessibilty would be variable.

El Loro

I mostly do online banking EL, and I know that would also work for a lot of people but what do you do if you are a shop and need to pay in takings?  The only thing I need a bank branch for is paying in the occasional cheque, which as far as I know you can't do anywhere else except your bank. My local bank is only open 2 days a week. I think the banking industry is going to have to provide an alternative, possibly through post offices, for things that can, at the moment, only be done through a bank.
